Satellite imagery contains various elements such as clouds, cloud shadows, and terrain shadows. Accurately identifying and eliminating these factors that complicate satellite image analysis is essential for maintaining the reliability of remote sensing imagery. For this reason, satellites such as Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Compact Advanced Satellite 500-1 (CAS500-1) provide Usable Data Masks(UDMs)with images as part of their Analysis Ready Data (ARD) product. Precise detection of clouds and their shadows is crucial for the accurate construction of these UDMs. Existing cloud and their shadow detection methods are categorized into threshold-based methods and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based methods. Recently, AI-based methods, particularly deep learning networks, have been preferred due to their advantage in handling large datasets. This study aims to analyze the applicability of constructing UDMs for high-resolution satellite images through deep learning-based cloud and their shadow detection using open-source datasets. To validate the performance of the deep learning network, we compared the detection results generated by the network with pre-existing UDMs from Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and CAS500-1 satellite images. The results demonstrated that high accuracy in the detection outcomes produced by the deep learning network. Additionally, we applied the network to detect cloud and their shadow in KOMPSAT-3/3A images, which do not provide UDMs. The experiment confirmed that the deep learning network effectively detected cloud and their shadow in high-resolution satellite images. Through this, we could demonstrate the applicability that UDM data for high-resolution satellite imagery can be constructed using the deep learning network.
Sea ice motion is an important factor for assessing change of sea ice because the motion affects to not only regional distribution of sea ice but also new ice growth and thickness of ice. This study presents an application of multi-temporal high-resolution optical satellites images obtained from Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) and Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3 (KOMPSAT-3) to measure sea ice motion using SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), SURF (Speeded Up Robust Features) and ORB (Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF) feature tracking techniques. In order to use satellite images from two different sensors, spatial and radiometric resolution were adjusted during pre-processing steps, and then the feature tracking techniques were applied to the pre-processed images. The matched features extracted from the SIFT showed even distribution across whole image, however the matched features extracted from the SURF showed condensed distribution of features around boundary between ice and ocean, and this regionally biased distribution became more prominent in the matched features extracted from the ORB. The processing time of the feature tracking was decreased in order of SIFT, SURF and ORB techniques. Although number of the matched features from the ORB was decreased as 59.8% compared with the result from the SIFT, the processing time was decreased as 8.7% compared with the result from the SIFT, therefore the ORB technique is more suitable for fast measurement of sea ice motion.

Recently, the demand for high-resolution satellite images increases in many fields such as land monitoring and terrain analysis. Therefore, the need for geometric correction is increasing. As an automatic precision geometric correction method, there is a method of automatically extracting the GCP by matching between the GCP Chip and the satellite image. For automatic precision geometric correction, the success rate of matching GCP Chip and satellite image is important. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the matching performance of the manufactured GCP Chip. In order to evaluate the matching performance of GCP Chips, a total of 3,812 GCP Chips in South Korea were used as experimental data. The GCP Chip matching results of KOMPSAT-3A and Google Map showed similar matching results. Therefore, we determined that Google Map satellite imagery could replace high-resolution satellite imagery. Also, presented a method using center point and error radius of Google Map to reduce the time required to verify matching performance. As a result, it is best to set the optimum error radius to 8.5m. Evaluated the matching performance of GCP Chips in South Korea using Google Maps. And verified matching result using presented method. As a result, the GCP Chip s in South Korea had a matching success rate of about 94%. Also, the main matching failure factors were analyzed by matching failure GCP Chips. As a result, Except for GCP Chips that need to be remanufactured, the remaining GCP Chips can be used for the automatic geometric correction of satellite images.

In this paper, we analyze the feasibility of establishing a precise sensor model for high-resolution satellite imagery using unified control points. For this purpose, we integrated unified control points and the aerial orthoimages from the national land information map (http://map.ngii.go.kr/ms/map/NlipMap.do) operated by the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII). Then, we collected the image coordinates corresponding to the unified control point's location in the satellite image. The unified control points were used as observation data for establishing a precise sensor model. For the experiment, we compared the results of precise sensor modeling using GNSS survey data and those using unified control points. Our experimental results showed that it is possible to establish a precise sensor model with around 2 m accuracy when using unified control points.
Surface reflectance obtained by absolute atmospheric correction from satellite images is useful for scientific land applications and analysis ready data (ARD). For Landsat and Sentinel-2 images, many types of radiometric processing methods have been developed, and these images are supported by most commercial and open-source software. However, in the case of KOMPSAT 3/3A images, there are currently no tools or open source resources for obtaining the reflectance at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and top-of-canopy (TOC). In this study, the atmospheric correction module of KOMPSAT 3/3A images is newly implemented to the optical calibration algorithm supported in the Orfeo ToolBox (OTB), a remote sensing open-source tool. This module contains the sensor model and spectral response data of KOMPSAT 3A. Aerosol measurement properties, such as AERONET data, can be used to generate TOC reflectance image. Using this module, an experiment was conducted, and the reflection products for TOA and TOC with and without AERONET data were obtained. This approach can be used for building the ARD database for surface reflection by absolute atmospheric correction derived from KOMPSAT 3/3A satellite images.
There are significant differences in geometric property and stereo model accuracy between single-sensor stereo that uses two images taken by stereo acquisition mechanism within identical sensor and dual-sensor stereo that randomly combines two images taken from two different sensors. This paper compares the two types of stereo pairs thoroughly. For experiment, two single-sensor stereo pairs and four dual-sensor stereo pairs were constituted using SPOT-5 stereo and KOMPSAT-2 stereo covering same area. While the two single-sensor stereos have stable geometry, the dual-sensor stereos produced two stable and two unstable geometries. In particular, the unstable geometry led to a decrease in stereo model accuracy of the dual-sensor stereos. The two types of stereo pairs were also compared under the stable geometry. Overall, single-sensor stereos performed better than dual-sensor stereos for vertical mapping, but dual-sensor stereos was more accurate for horizontal mapping. This paper has revealed the differences of two types of stereos with their geometric properties and positioning accuracies, suggesting important considerations for handling satellite stereo images, particularly for dual-satellite stereo images.
This article presents a new method for semi-automatic extraction of building information (height, shape, and footprint location) from monoscopic urban scenes. The proposed method is to expand Semi-automatic Volumetric Shadow Analysis (SVSA), which can handle occluded building footprints or shadows semi-automatically. SVSA can extract wrong building information from a single high resolution satellite image because SVSA is influenced by extracted shadow area, image noise and objects around a building. The proposed method can reduce the disadvantage of SVSA by using multi-spectral images. The proposed method applies SVSA to panchromatic and multi-spectral images. Results of SVSA are used as parameters of a cost function. A building height with maximum value of the cost function is determined as actual building height. For performance evaluation, building heights extracted by SVSA and the proposed method from Kompsat-2 images were compared with reference heights extracted from stereo IKONOS. The result of performance evaluation shows the proposed method is a more accurate and stable method than SVSA.
Agricultural reservoirs are crucial structures for water resources monitoring especially in Korea where the resources are seasonally unevenly distributed. Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, being utilized as tools for monitoring the reservoirs, have unique limitations in that optical sensors are sensitive to weather conditions and SAR sensors are sensitive to noises and multiple scattering over dense vegetations. In this study, we tried to improve water body detection accuracy through optical-SAR data fusion, and quantitatively analyze the complementary effects. We first detected water bodies at Edong, Cheontae reservoir using the Compact Advanced Satellite 500(CAS500), Kompsat-3/3A, and Sentinel-2 derived Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), and SAR backscattering coefficient from Sentinel-1 by K-means clustering technique. After that, the improvements in accuracies were analyzed by applying K-means clustering to the 2-D grid space consists of NDWI and SAR. Kompsat-3/3A was found to have the best accuracy (0.98 at both reservoirs), followed by Sentinel-2(0.83 at Edong, 0.97 at Cheontae), Sentinel-1(both 0.93), and CAS500(0.69, 0.78). By applying K-means clustering to the 2-D space at Cheontae reservoir, accuracy of CAS500 was improved around 22%(resulting accuracy: 0.95) with improve in precision (85%) and degradation in recall (14%). Precision of Kompsat-3A (Sentinel-2) was improved 3%(5%), and recall was degraded 4%(7%). More precise water resources monitoring is expected to be possible with developments of high-resolution SAR satellites including CAS500-5, developments of image fusion and water body detection techniques.
Over the past 20 years, Korea's overall import and export cargo volume has increased at an average annual rate of approximately 5.3%. About 99% of the cargo is still being transported by sea. Due to recent increases in maritime cargo volume, congestion in maritime logistics has become challenging due to factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts. Continuous monitoring of ports has become crucial. Various ground observation systems and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data have been utilized for monitoring ports and conducting numerous preliminary studies for the efficient operation of container terminals and cargo volume prediction. However, small and developing countries' ports face difficulties in monitoring due to environmental issues and aging infrastructure compared to large ports. Recently, with the increasing utility of artificial satellites, preliminary studies have been conducted using satellite imagery for continuous maritime cargo data collection and establishing ocean monitoring systems in vast and hard-to-reach areas. This study aims to visually detect ships docked at berths in the Busan New Port using high-resolution satellite imagery and quantitatively evaluate berth utilization rates. By utilizing high-resolution satellite imagery from Compact Advanced Satellite 500-1 (CAS500-1), Korea Multi-Purpose satellite-3 (KOMPSAT-3), PlanetScope, and Sentinel-2A, ships docked within the port berths were visually detected. The berth utilization rate was calculated using the total number of ships that could be docked at the berths. The results showed variations in berth utilization rates on June 2, 2022, with values of 0.67, 0.7, and 0.59, indicating fluctuations based on the time of satellite image capture. On June 3, 2022, the value remained at 0.7, signifying a consistent berth utilization rate despite changes in ship types. A higher berth utilization rate indicates active operations at the berth. This information can assist in basic planning for new ship operation schedules, as congested berths can lead to longer waiting times for ships in anchorages, potentially resulting in increased freight rates. The duration of operations at berths can vary from several hours to several days. The results of calculating changes in ships at berths based on differences in satellite image capture times, even with a time difference of 4 minutes and 49 seconds, demonstrated variations in ship presence. With short observation intervals and the utilization of high-resolution satellite imagery, continuous monitoring within ports can be achieved. Additionally, utilizing satellite imagery to monitor changes in ships at berths in minute increments could prove useful for small and developing country ports where harbor management is not well-established, offering valuable insights and solutions.
