  • Scrap steel used as a charge material in melting process of cast iron foundry is mostly press scrap. The press scrap usually causes several problems including energy loss, workability, safety, and so on. By charging the shredded scrap instead of the press scrap, it is expected that the above-mentioned problems can be solved. In this study, the power basic units to produce cast iron by using the press and shredded scrap are compared in 3t/h medium-frequency induction melting furnace. Charging the shredded scrap instead of the press scrap was confirmed that the power basic unit is improved by about 15%. The characteristics and restrictions of the usage according to the shape and size of scrap steel were considered.

  • In this study, the power basic units to produce cast iron by using the press and shredded scrap are compared in 16t/h low-frequency induction melting furnace. Charging the shredded scrap instead of the press scrap was confirmed that the power basic unit is improved by about 5%. The energy characteristics according to the shape and size of scrap steel and the effect of the furnace size were investigated. Finally, the strategy to improve the utilization of this technology was proposed.

  • In this study, visual simulations were performed on the packing behaviors of various press scraps. The packing states after the initial charging step were quantitatively compared. The comparison targets were 300mm cubic press scraps, customized cubic press scraps, customized octagonal prism press scraps and customized cylinder press scraps. The customized press scraps were designed in customized sizes for furnaces with melting capacities of 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6t/h. The packing states such as the initial charging number, the additional charging weight percentage, the packing density and the gap volume percentage were comparatively evaluated.

  • Almost all ferrous foundries use press scrap as the main charge material. In this study, we tried to reduce the melting energy by optimizing the shape and size of press scrap. The experiment was conducted using 3t/h medium frequency induction melting furnaces at two foundries. In the case of the improved condition, customized press scrap was used for initial charging, and small press scrap was used for additional charging. The energy reduction effect of the improved condition was enhanced by reinforcing the cleaning process of the return scrap surface. The reduction ratios of the melting energy basic unit by the improved condition at the two foundries were almost the same (23.3 and 23.9%). The improved condition was very effective in both foundries with different basic unit levels. The reasons for energy reduction and the economic effects of the improved condition were described.

  • The Bunam Stock ($29.5km^2$ area) is an outcrop of plutonic complex classified four facies: coarse-grained granite, quartz monzodiorite, granodiorite and fine-grained granite. Three facies except the last one exhibit very irregular boundaries with gradational compositional variations between both facies and show concentric zoning from the central quartz monzodiorite through granodiorite to outer coarse-grained granite. Mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) commonly occur in granodiorite. Some MMEs, have very fine-grained chilled margins and indentedly crenulate contacts, and display horizontally circular and vertically elongate shapes. Their shape and granularity indicate coeval flow and mingling of partly crystalline felsic and mafic magmas. MMEs exhibit dark fine-grained margins giving them a ellipsoidal form that has been attributed to undercooling of a mafic magma as blobs intruded into a felsic magma. The observed relations in the Bunam Stock identify that two endmembers are coarse-grained granite from a felsic magma and quartz monzodiorite from a mafic magma, and hybrid is granodiorite including MMEs. So they exhibit concentric zoning that lays the center on the mafic endmember due to magma mixing at the contacts of two magmas, when mafic magma injected into felsic magma. Thus the quartz monzodiorite may probably represent an ancient conduit of mafic magma transport through a granitic magma chamber. Mafic magma would rise through the conduit in which favorable conditions for magma mixing occurred. All these features suggest that they formed from mixing processes of calc-alkaline magma in the Bunam Stock.
