Thermal-Hydraulic Research Review and Cooperation Outcome for Light Water Reactor Fuel (경수로핵연료 열수력 연구개발 분석 및 연산학 협력 성과)

  • The fuel assembly for pressurized water reactor (PWR) consists of fuel rod bundle, spacer grid and bottom/top end fittings. The cooling water in high pressure and temperature is introduced in lower plenum of reactor core and directed to upper plenum through the subchannel which is formed between the fuel rods. The main thermal-hydraulic performance parameters for the PWR fuel are pressure drop and critical heat flux in normal operating condition, and quenching time in accident condition. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing an advanced PWR fuel, dual-cooled annular fuel and accident tolerant fuel for the enhancement of fuel performance and the localization. For the key thermal-hydraulic technology development of PWR fuel, the KAERI LWR fuel team has conducted the experiments for pressure drop, turbulent flow mixing and heat transfer, critical heat flux(CHF) and quenching. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was also performed to predict flow and heat transfer in fuel assembly including the spent fuel assembly in dry cask for interim repository. In addition, the research cooperation with university and nuclear fuel company was also carried out to develop a basic thermal-hydraulic technology and the commercialization.

Joint Characteristics in Sedimentary Rocks of Gyeongsang Supergroup (경상누층군 퇴적암의 절리 특성 연구)

  • Two orthogonal joint sets develop well only in sandstone beds in the sandstone-mudstone sequences of Gumi and Dasa outcrops within Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin. And various joint data are similar in the beds of the same thickness in both outcrops, meaning that the joint sets were homogeneously produced by extensional deformation in the same regional stress field. Most of joints in the sandstone beds are orthogonal to, and confined by bed boundaries, which are believed to be formed by hydrofracturing during consolidation after burial. Two orthogonal joint sets are considered to be almost coeval on the basis of mutual abutting relationship which makes up fracture grid-lock and a product of rapid switching of ${\sigma}_2$ and ${\sigma}_3$ axes with constant ${\sigma}_1$ direction oriented to vertical. The joint sets in the sandstone beds show planar surfaces, parallel orientations and regular spacing, with joint spacing linearly proportional to bed thickness. The spacing distributions of the joints seem to correspond to log-normal to almost normal distribution in most of the beds. But multilayer joints do not display regular spacing and dominant size. Either joint set in this study is characterized by a high level of joint density and a saturated spacing distribution as indicated by the mode/mean ratio values and the Cv(coefficient of variance) values. Joint aperture tends to increase with the vertical length of the joints controlled by bed thickness.

The Cracking Reaction of Vacuum Gas Oil on Mordenite Modified by HF and Steaming (불화수소산과 스팀처리한 모더나이트상에서 진공가스유의 분해반응)

  • Three types of mordenites treated by steaming($SM_{6.5}$), HF solution for $SM_{6.5}(FM_a)$ and HF solutlon+steaming for $SM_{6.5}(FM_b)$ were prepared and used as cracking catalysts of vacuum gas oil. These samples were analysed by XRF and XPS for average and surface Si/Al atomic ratio, XRD for unit cell constants, nitrogen adsorption/desorption for porosity, pyridine-IR for acidic properties. In comparison with three type samples, $SM_{6.5}$ had a lot of acid amount and showed micropore volume mostly(>85% to total volume). Dealuminated $FM_a$, compared with $SM_{6.5}$, was decreased a little in acid amount and improved for porosity. Also, $FM_b$ was decreased further in acid amount and developed in mesopore dramatically. The catalytic activity and the yield of gasoline, kerosine+diesel and branched aromatic over the modified mordenites which have developed mesopore were improved. This is due to limited access of diffusion of large molecules within pore of the modified mordenites.

Feasibility Study of Hierarchical Kriging Model in the Design Optimization Process (계층적 크리깅 모델을 이용한 설계 최적화 기법의 유용성 검증)

  • On the optimization design problem using surrogate model, it requires considerable number of sampling points to construct a surrogate model which retains the accuracy. As an alternative to reduce construction cost of the surrogate model, Variable-Fidelity Modeling(VFM) technique, where correct high fidelity model based on the low fidelity surrogate model is introduced. In this study, hierarchical kriging model for variable-fidelity surrogate modeling is used and an optimization framework with multi-objective genetic algorithm(MOGA) is presented. To prove the feasibility of this framework, airfoil design optimization process is performed for the transonic region. The parameters of PARSEC are used to design variables and the optimization process is performed in case of varying number of grid and varying fidelity. The results showed that pareto front of all variable-fidelity models are similar with its single-level of fidelity model and calculation time is considerably reduced. Based on computational results, it is shown that VFM is a more efficient way and has an accuracy as high as that single-level of fidelity model optimization.

Characteristics of $TiH_2$ under High Pressure (고압하에서 $TiH_2$의 특성화 연구)

  • The Earth outer core accomodates moderately considerable amount of lighter elements than pure iron itself. Hydrogen is one of the possible candidates of minor constituents in the outer core. It would be worth while to extend for the pressure effect on the solubility of hydrogen in the metal-hydrides including iron hydride. In view of hydrogen being one of the potential substitutes for petroleum, searching a more efficient way for storing hydrogen in the form of hydrides is of considerable value. For two purposes, $TiH_2$was selected among lot of hydrides for its characteristics under pressure and temperature. There have been two kinds of experiment carried out on $TiH_2$ under different experimental conditions. As one of these attempts, polycrystalline $TiH_2$ was loaded up to 15 GPa stepwise at the constant temperature 500${\circ}$ using a piston-cylinder diamond anvil cell equipped with a miniature furnace of an electric power supply. The X-ra diffraction technique was employed on the quenched samples after the simultaneous high pressure and temperature treatments. During these high pressure-temperature runs, and irreversible phase of $TiH_2$ has been observed at the pressures higher than 11.3 GPa, which would be assigned to the orthorhombic crystal system as one of the new phase(s) of $TiH_2$. Molar volume change on this phase transition is ∼10%.

  • 현재 국내에서 시행되고 있는 '4대강 살리기 사업'은 하천에서 발생하는 홍수 및 가뭄재해방지를 위한 다양한 공학적 노력을 시도하고 있다. 특히 안정적인 수위 및 유량확보와 홍수방지를 위한 보(weir)가 4대강 유역에 16개 설치되고 있다. 이러한 보 구간에는 고정보와 가동보가 복합적으로 설치되고 있으며 가동보는 그 형상과 운영방식에 따라 다양한 설계방안이 적용되었다. '4대강 살리기 사업' 중 낙동강 23공구의 강정보 공사 구간에는 원호형태의 측면 형상을 갖는 라이징 섹터게이트(Rising sector gate)가 적용되었다. 라이징 섹터게이트는 구조물의 높이가 낮고 수문의 개폐장치가 수문피어 구조물 내에 설치되어 경관이 우수하며, 구조가 간단하여 비체와 수류의 안정성이 뛰어나기 때문에 4개의 공사구간에 적용되었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 강정보의 가동보 구간 2문 중 1문을 1/100 축척으로 제작하여 가변경사 개수로에 설치하고, 홍수 빈도별 상류 유량 조건과 하류단 수위조건으로 케이스를 정하여 실험을 수행하였다. 본 실험에서 사용한 개수로 장치는 너비 0.6 m, 높이 0.8 m, 그리고 길이 15.0 m(측정가능 구간, 헤드탱크와 테일게이트 부제외)의 개수로 실험장치이다. 측부는 모두 강화유리로 되어 육안관찰 및 계측 시 용이하게 제작되었으며, 순환식 유량 공급장치를 구축하여 수로의 하부에 설치된 유량탱크로부터 계속적으로 순환하도록 설계되었다. 또한 수로 하단으로부터 상단방향으로 약 33 m 지점에 전동 유압식 Jack screw 2기가 설치되어 경사도를 조절할 수 있도록 제작되었다. 유량조절용 판넬의 제어기판에는 디지털 경사계가 설치되어 있기 때문에 보다 정확한 경사도의 조절이 가능하다. 보 모형의 총연장은 53 cm이며 폭은 45 cm이다. 섹터게이트의 게이트부분은 직경 15 cm로 설계하였다. 문주부분을 포함한 모든 모형은 아크릴로 제작하며 레이저의 주사를 방해하지 않으며 투과율을 최대로 할 수 있도록 고강도의 아크릴을 가장 얇게 하여 중공형태를 채택하였다. 실험조건은 우선 보의 운영방안에 따라 게이트의 4가지 개방도를 설정하였고, 특히 평수위조건에서는 보의 상류부에 퇴적된 퇴적물의 세척을 위한 flushing 운영개방도 포함되어 있다. 홍수시에 대한 유량조건은 2년 빈도에 해당하는 유량을 수문의 비율과 상사법칙에 따라 설정하였으며 하류단 수위조건도 동일한 조건에 대한 값을 채택하여 적용하였다. 유동장의 해석을 위해서는 비접촉식 계측방법인 PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) 시스템을 채택하여 2차원(x-z 방향) laser sheet를 생성하고 주입된 particle에서 반사된 변위(displacement) 정보를 상호상관(cross-correlation)기법으로 유동장을 계산하였다. 또한 수리모형과 동일한 지형격자를 구축하여 3차원 CFD 프로그램인 FLOW-3D로 계산하여 결과를 비교하였다. 특히 flushing 운영방안에 대한 게이트부의 개방도를 세가지(30, 45, $60^{\circ}$)로 구분하여 모의하였고, 적절한 개방도를 제안하고자 하였다. 실험결과는 우선 4가지 운영방안에 대한 가동보 주변에서의 유속장을 파악하였고, 최대유속의 발생위치의 변화를 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 이에 따른 보의 바닥에서 최대유속이 발생할 경우, 하상보호공 위치와 거리 등에 대해서 분석하였다. 이를 통해 가동보 운영에 따른 다양한 유속구조를 파악할 수 있게 되며 구조적 안정성 확보를 위한 검증자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 예상된다. 향후, 가동보 운영방안 중 수세효과(flushing effect)에 대한 효과분석을 위해 게이트부 상류구간에 적절한 입경과 비중의 퇴적물질을 설치하는 연구와 상류부에서의 유입유사농도 및 시간변화에 따른 퇴적에 관한 연구를 수행할 계획이다.

Enhanced Recovery of Gravity Fields from Dense Altimeter Data

  • This paper presents a procedure to recover sea surface heights (SSH) and free-air (FA) gravity anomalies from dense satellite altimeter SSH data with enhanced accuracies over the full spectrum of the gravity field. A wavenumber correlation filtering (WCF) of co-linear SSH tracks is developed for the coherent signals of sub-surface geological masses. Orbital cross-over adjustments with bias parameters are applied to the filtered SSH data, which are then separated into two groups of ascending and descending tracks and gridded with tensioned splines. A directional sensitive filter (DSF) is developed to reduce residual errors in the orbital adjustments that appear as track patterned SSH. Finally, FA gravity anomalies can be obtained by the application of a gradient filter on a high resolution estimate of geoid undulations after subtracting dynamic sea surface topography (DSST) from the SSH. These procedures are applied to the Geosat Geodetic Mission (GM) data of the southern oceans in a test area of ca. $900km\;\times{1,200}\;km$ to resolve geoid undulations and FA gravity anomalies to wavelengths of-10 km and larger. Comparisons with gravity data from ship surveys, predictions by least squares collocation (LSC), and 2 versions of NOAA's predictions using vertical deflections illustrate the performance of this procedure for recovering all elements of the gravity spectrum. Statistics on differences between precise ship data and predicted FA gravity anomalies show a mean of 0.1 mgal, an RMS of 3.5 mgal, maximum differences of 10. 2 mgal and -18.6 mgal, and a correlation coefficient of 0.993 over four straight ship tracks of ca. 1,600 km where gravity changes over 150 mgals.

Analysis of Urban Inundation Considering Building Footprints Based on Dual-Drainage Scheme (건물의 영향을 고려한 이중배수체계기반 침수해석)

  • This study aims to investigate urban inundation considering building footprints based on dual-drainage scheme. For this purpose, LiDAR data is cultivated to generate two original data set in terms of DEM with $1{\times}1$ meter and building layer of the study drainage area in Seoul and then the building layer is overlapped as vector polygon with the mesh data with the same size as DEM. Then, terrain data for modeling were re-sampled to reduce resolution as $10{\times}10$ meters. As results, the simulated depth without considering building footprints has a tendency to underestimate the inundation depth compared to observed data analized by CCTV imagery. Otherwise, the simulation result considering building footprints revealed definitely higher fitness. The difference of inundation depth came from the variation of inundation volume which was relevant to inundation extent. If the building footprints are enlarged, the possible inundation depth is increased, which results in being inundation depth higher because hydrological conditions such as rainfall depth are conservational. Otherwise, according to comparison of inundation extents, there were no significant difference but the case of considering building footprint was revealed slightly higher fitness. Thus, it is concluded that the considering building footprint for inundation analysis of urban watershed should be required to improve simulation accuracy synthetically.

Investigation of Catalytic Deactivation by Small Content Oxygen Contained in Regeneration Gas Influenced on DSRP (직접 황 회수 공정으로 유입되는 재생가스에 함유된 미량산소의 촉매활성저하 원인 규명)

  • In order to regenerate the sulfidated desulfurization sorbent, oxygen is used as the oxidant agent on the regeneration process. The small amount of oxygen un-reacted in regeneration process is flowed into direct sulfur recovery process. However, the reactivity for $SO_2$ reduction can be deteriorated with the un-reacted oxygen by various reasons. In this study, the deactivation effects of un-reacted oxygen contained in the off-gas of regeneration process flowed into direct sulfur recovery process of hot gas desulfurization system were investigated. Sn-Zr based catalysts were used as the catalyst for $SO_2$ reduction. The contents of $SO_2$ and $O_2$ contained in the regenerator off-gas used as the reactants were fixed to 5.0 vol% and 4.0 vol%, respectively. The catalytic activity tests with a Sn-Zr based catalyst were for $SO_2$ reduction performed at $300-450^{\circ}C$ and 1-20 atm. The un-reacted oxygen oxidized the elemental sulfur produced by $SO_2$ catalytic reduction and the conversion of $SO_2$ was reduced due to the production of $SO_2$. However, the temperature for the oxidation of elemental sulfur increased with increasing pressure in the catalytic reactor. Therefore, it was concluded that the decrease of reactivity at high pressure is occurred by catalytic deactivation, which is the re-oxidation of lattice oxygen vacancy in Sn-Zr based catalyst with the un-reacted oxygen on the catalysis by redox mechanism. Meanwhile the un-reacted oxygen oxidized CO supplied as the reducing agent and the temperature in the catalyst packed bed also increased due to the combustion of CO. It was concluded that the rapidly increasing temperature in the packed bed can induce the catalytic deactivation such as the sintering of active components.

Effect of La in Partial Oxidation of Methane to Hydrogen over M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) Catalysts (M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) 촉매상에서 수소 제조를 위한 메탄의 부분산화반응에서 La의 효과)

  • The catalytic yields of POM to hydrogen over M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) were investigated using a fixed bed flow reactor under atmosphere. The crystal phase behavior of reduced La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalysts before and after the reaction were studied via XRD analysis. FESEM and EDS analyses were further performed to show the uniformed distribution of La, Ni, and Ce metal particles on the catalyst surface. XPS results showed O2-, O22- species and metal ions such as Ce3+, Ce4+, La3+ and Ni2+ etc. were on the catalyst surface. When 1 wt% of La was added to Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalyst, Ni2p3/2 and Ce3d5/2 increased 52.7 and 6.3%, respectively. The yield of hydrogen on the La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalyst was 89.1%, which was much better than that of M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = Ce, Y). As Ce4+ ions of CeO2 produced by the reaction of AlCeO3 with oxygen were substitute to La3+, it made oxygen vacancies in the lattice and further improved the hydrogen yield by increasing the dispersion of Ni atoms with strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect.
