  • It is possible to enhance the color of the natural diamond with a high pressure high temperature(HPHT) process. We employed a pyrophyllite tube cell and cubic press apparatus for HPHT treatment on the brown colored Type II (5.6 GPa/ $1700^{\circ}C$/ 52 min), and Type I aB(5.6 GPa/ $1650^{\circ}C$/ 30 min) diamond samples. We investigated the microstructure, Types, fluorescence, properties of the diamonds with an optical microscopy, FT-IR, photoluminescence(PL) spectroscopy, Diamond-View, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Two tinted brown diamonds changed into colorless just after the HPHT process. Optical microscopy showed that no crack and significant inclusion evolution occurred during the HPHT process except the small graphite spot appeared in Type I aB sample. FTIR spectrum confirmed that no Type, amber center, and platelet defect change with the HPHT treatment. Diamond-View could not distinguish the HPHT treated diamonds from the naturals. PL spectroscopy showed that N3 and H3 color centers remained even after HPHT process. Consequently, we successfully changed the color of diamonds into colorless by 5.6 GPa HPHT process.

  • In this paper, fretting wear tests were conducted in air at room temperature (RT) and in water at high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) environment to analyze the wear characteristic. As for the supporting condition between the tube and spring/dimple, the gap of 0.2 mm in air at RT and the normal force of 10 N and the slip of $50\;{\mu}\;m$ in water at HTHP were applied. Four different shapes of spring/dimple specimen (type A, B, C, D) were used. Detail eaxamination of wear scar was also performed using SEM micrographs. As a result, in the case of the spring of truncated wedge, severer wear occurs than the others. Protrusion part was found and larger in air at RT. It is thought that the difference in the wear volume and the protrusion is caused by the different wear mechanism corresponding to the different environment.

  • The impact/sliding wear tests have been performed in high temperature high pressure water in order to evaluate the effect of spring shape on the wear behavior of a spring supported tube for nuclear fuel fretting study. The results indicate that the tube wear volume and the size of the wear scar are closely related to each spring shape. From the analysis of the wear scar, it is possible to extract the real worn area (Aw) from the size of the wear scar (At). In addition, we found that the wear volume has a linear relation with the real worm area rather than the size of wear scar and this was only determined by each spring shape in the high temperature and pressure water condition. From the above results, it is possible to evaluate the wear resistant spring using the correlation between the variation of the real worn area and the wear behavior at each spring.

  • This paper presents the measured radiation intensity of high-pressure and large-current arc with the current. In order to measure the radiation intensity of large-current arc, a model circuit breaker was specially designed and manufactured and the method using an astronomical telescope was utilized after various measuring methods were investigated. A trigger system was designed and fabricated to coincide the time of desired current with the exposure time of 1ms of the spectroscope. A high-speed camera was used to investigate the shape and behavior of the arc and the captured results have been used to calculate the radiation energy. The calculated arc temperature with Boltzmann plot method using the measured radiation intensity have $18,000{\sim}27,000K$ to the current $4kA{\sim}15kA$. And also, using the calculated arc temperature and the captured arc shape the radiation energy of the current $5kA{\sim}15kA$ were calculated with $8{\times}10^5{\sim}4.0{\times}10^6W/m$ respectively.

  • The shaped charge was used in explosive demolition of a steel frame structure, but it was often not used because it was limited to use and impossible to supply at domestic and overseas. Existing linear shaped charge did not have sufficient cutting performance to cut steel frame structures with a huge scale and thick steel plate. To solve these problems, we produced a device that could generate metal jets using industrial explosives of high detonation velocity and pressure. In this study, we made a charging container of three types which applicable to explosive demolition of steel frame structures. The experiment of cutting performances was carried out to evaluate the effect of cutting of charging containers on the various thicknesses of the H-beam and steel plate. As a result of the experiment, sufficient cutting performance was confirmed.

  • Fine diamond powders are synthesized with a 420 ${\phi}$ cubic press and stack-cell composed of Kovar ($Fe_{54}Ni_{29}Co_{17}$) (or Kovar+7 ${\mu}m$-thick Zn electroplated) alloy and graphite disks. The high pressure high temperature (HPHT) process condition was executed at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 280 seconds by varying the nominal pressure of 5.7~10.6 GPa. The density of formation, size, shape, and phase of diamonds are determined by optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis-differential thermal ammnlysis (TGA-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Through the microscopy analyses, we found that 1.5 ${\mu}m$ super-fine tetrahedral diamonds were synthesized for Zn coated Kovar cell with whole range of pressure while ~3 ${\mu}m$ super-fine diamond for conventional Kovar cell with < 10.6 GPa. Based on $750^{\circ}C$ exothermic reaction of diamonds in TGA-DTA, and characteristic peaks of the diamonds in XRD and micro-Raman analysis, we could confirm that the diamonds were successfully formed with the whole pressure range in this research. Finally, we propose a new process for super-fine diamonds by lowering the pressure condition and employing Zn electroplated Kovar disks.

  • We investigated color and graphite layer formation on the surface of Type I tinted brown diamonds exposed for 5 minutes under a high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) condition in a stable graphite regime. We executed the HPHT processes of Process I, varying the temperature from $1600^{\circ}C$ to $2300^{\circ}C$ under 5.2 GPa pressure for 5 minutes, and Process II, varying the pressure from 4.2 to 5.7 GPa at $2150^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes. Optical microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to check the microstructure and surface layer phase evolution. For Process I, we observed a color change to vivid yellow and greenish yellow and the growth of a graphite layer as the temperature increased. For Process II, the graphite layer thickness increased as the pressure decreased. We also confirmed by 531 nm micro-Raman spectroscopy that all diamonds showed a $1440cm^{-1}$ characteristic peak, which remained even after HPHT annealing. The results implied that HPHT-treated colored diamonds can be distinguished from natural stones by checking for the existence of the $1440cm^{-1}$ peak with 531 nm micro-Raman spectroscopy.

  • This paper describes the accident analysis by modeling the current transformer mounting in meaium voltage metal-clad switchgear(MCSG). In analyzing the accident the reconstruction at the current transformer mounting(VCB connecting guide) has to be taken into account. The accident was modelled as a 3-phase ground fault mounting between the end plate of a high voltage lines and the safety shutter at the current transformer mounting of the VCB inside the metal clad switchgear. Since the outside maintenance of the metal clad switchgear is restricted by the enclosed compartments, its circumference has to be kept clean. Through the reconstruction results, it was confirmed that the fault of the enclosed switchboard could be reduced when the shutter made of Fe material was changed into an insulation.

  • We executed the property changes of the sintered MgO (99.9% purity, 300nm size) specimens with addition to CaO content of 0.00wt%, 0.25wt%, and 0.50wt%, processed at 7GPa, for 5min, 600~$800^{\circ}C$. To investigate the micro-structure and physical property changes of the sintered MgO(-CaO), we employed a scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffractomerty(XRD), Vickers hardness, and density. The SEM result showed that MgO powder of 300nm size was changed into sintered structure of 520nm by high pressure and low temperature sintering, regardless of the CaO contents. According to the XRD analysis, no CaO phase observed, while MgO peaks shift indicated the existence of CaO in the MgO matrix. The Vickers hardness result showed that hardness of sintered MgO-CaO increased by 12% compared pure MgO under the same temperature conditions. It implied that we can obtain the same hardness with $100^{\circ}C$ lowered sintering temperatures by addition of CaO. The density results showed that it was possible to obtain density of 98%, which is 5% greater than that of pure MgO at low temperature of $600^{\circ}C$.
