Drag reduction produced by dilute solution of water soluble ionic polymer-surfactant complex under turbulent flow in a rotating disk apparatus(RDA) was investigated in this study. Three different molecular weights of polyacrylic acid(PAA) were adopted as drag reducing additives, and distilled water was used as a solvent. Experiments were undertaken to observe the dependence of drag reduction on various factors such as polymer molecular weight, molecular expansions and flexibility, rotating speed of the disk and polymer concentration. Specific considerations were put on conformational difference between surfactant and polymer, and effect of pH on ionic polymer possessing various molecular conformation through pH. The complex of ionic polymer and surfactant(Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) behaves like a large polyelectrolyte. Surfactant changes the polymer conformation and then increases the dimension of the polymer. The radius of gyration, hydrodynamic volume and relative viscosity of the polymer-surfactant system are observed to be greater than those of polymer itself. Such surfactant-polymer complex has enhanced drag reduction properties.

Deoxyribonucelic acid (DNA) molecules have a huge molecular weight so that DNA was reported to be a promising natural polymer to give durable films. Among many applications of DNA, the authors focused their attention on separation membranes derived from DNA because membranes will play an important role in environmental and energy related processes. DNA-polyion complex membranes were prepared from DNA and corresponding polycations. The DNA-polyion complex membranes showed chiral separation ability toward racemic amino acid mixtures.

$\varepsilon$-Caprolactame as organic monomer was intercalated in the interlayer space of montmorillonite and polymerized by polymerization reaction so that the inorganic polymer and organic polymer could be combined each other by chemical bonding. The results of X-ray and IR analysis showed that the polymerization reaction of $\varepsilon$-caprolactame between the interlayer spaces has been performed sucessfully. In order to study polymeric reaction product in detail we have isolated the polymerized material from the interlayer space and analyzed it by X-ray diffractometer and IR-Spectrocopy. The comparison of these results with them of the analyses for thee pure polymer which has been synthesized by polymeric reaction of $\varepsilon$-carolactame without montmorillonite showed that the obtained both polymeric materials are the same compounds.
Polymers are introduced to neat asphalt to prepare self-healing asphalt. The polymers are Surlyn, Nylon and polyethyleneterephtalate(PET). Since they are known as having high intermolecular force, they have high processing temperature. Therefore they are hardly introduced into the asphalt as bulk state. So in this study, they are introduced as solutions. Polymer-modified asphalts showed excellent modification effect and also healing effect. 5% polymer added asphalt showed more than 18% increased tensile strength. This tensile strength increment can be explained by polymer's intermolecular forces. Especially Surlyn interacts with asphalt molecules by hydrogen bonding and also with metals in asphalt by ionic bonding. When it comes to healing aspect the healing efficiency of Surlyn increased to 138% based on tensile strength. That of PET increased to 141% based on complex modulus and in case of Nylon it increased to 131% based on impact strength. This tells that in dealing with healing efficiency the important considering factors are not only the intermolecular forces of the polymers but also the interaction between the polymer and asphalt molecules.
The interaction between poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) of positive charge per repeating unit and anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been investigated by light scattering, turbidimetry and fluorescence. Chain behavior of PDADMAC in 0.3 M NaCl aqueous solution seems like neutral polymer chain In good solvent. By adding SDS into PDADMAC solution, strong attractive interaction develops between them, and can be described with two kinds of critical aggregation concentration(CAC). First, at [SDS]/]DADMAC] 0.06, intramolecular critical micellization of SDS occurs inside a single polymer chain. The maximum size of SDS-polymer complex is observed just before intramolecular CAC. Above intramolecular CAC, the size of this complex starts to shrink slowly due to involvement of polymer subchain in micelle. Second, intermolecular CAC is also observed at [SDS]/[DADMAC] 0.5 by means of turbidimetry. Strong aggregation of polymer chains decorated with many micelles occurs after the second CAC, and huge aggregates have formed.

Nafion/basic polymer composite membranes were prepared to reduce the methanol crossover for the application of direct methanol fuel cell. The thermal and mechanical properties increased with increasing basic polymer contents due to the formation of complex via acid/basic interaction. The water uptake, proton conductivity, methanol permeability decreased with increasing basic polymer concentration by reduction of acidity associated with the formation of acid/base complex. The molecular effect on those properties was not considerable.
Various polymer metal complexes have been synthesized from anhydrous $AlCl_3,\;FeCl_3,\;SbCl_5,\;SnCl_4\;and\;ZnCl_2$ with cation exchange resin in carbon disulfide solvent. The forms of the surfaces and sectioned beads of these polymer metal complexes have been observed using scanning electron probe microanalyzer. To examine the catalytic activity of polymer metal complexes, the esterification of various dibasic acids with alcohols have been carried out. Polymer metal complexes were found to be the effective catalyst for esterification of dibasic carboxylic acids.
