  • When rubber elastomer has contact with fuel, since the component and additive having low molecular weight can flow out, the physical properties of both elastomer and fuel could be hindered. In order to predict the life of the rubber elastomer, this study is to determine the change of weight, thickness, hardness, strain, and compression set as mechanical properties of the sealant rubber O-ring, which was dependent on volume, temperature, and storage time of the contacted fuel. We also determined purity of fuel via GC analysis and measured gross heat of combution. The results could be used as a reference to evaluate the life of the rubber elastomer.

  • Elastomeric o-ring performance and structure when subjected to a foreign object is studied using finite element analysis (FEA). Elastomeric o-rings have been studied using 2D analysis for a long time. Contact pressure is an important factor in o-ring design. When contact pressure is lower than applied pressure, leaking, vibration, and noise can occur; resulting in decreased output. In this study, we compared 2D and 3D analyses of elastomeric o-rings. Similar results were shown for 2D and 3D contact pressure. However, when an o-ring encounters foreign object matter, 3D analysis is required because contact pressure in every direction needs to be considered. We determined the influence of foreign matter on o-ring performance and structure by analyzing 10 cases with different clearances in a 3D model. Therefore, an o-ring encountering foreign object matter must be analyzed in 3D with the result included in the o-ring design.

  • A decoy is a weapon system that can protect vessels from an enemy's torpedo. Thus, the decoy should be able to operate in the field without any failure. Because the decoy can be inoperable once its sealing is broken and water permeates inside the system, the hermetic sealing capability considering the operational environment is mandatory. To be hermetically sealed, a rubber-type O-ring is generally used in a decoy system. The sealed performance of rubber-type products, however, tends to age and deteriorate with time. Therefore, the O-ring needs to be maintained or changed periodically. This paper proposes a method to estimate the proper maintenance period using the hardness and elongation percentage, which represents the performance of the O-ring product and test data from Accelerated Life Test (ALT) of the product. The O-ring used in this paper is a NBR type, and the temperature was chosen to be the main accelerating factor as referenced in many studies. The criteria for the failure of the O-ring was set for the product to be 50% degraded compared to the initial performance. In addition, the Korean standard KS M 6518 was adopted and referenced for the preparation of test samples and the calculation of estimates. The O-ring's predicted life was simulated by analyzing the test results from a computer program, and the optimized maintenance period for the product was determined.

  • The plasma resistances of nitrile curable perfluoro elastomer (NT PFE) and peroxide curable PFE (PO PFE) after exposing to $NF_3$ and $O_2$ remote plasmas were investigated by analyzing weight loss and morphology of O-ring made of PFE. The compounds were designed following the typical formulations of O-ring/seal which were applied in semiconductor and LCD production site. They were blended by an open roll mill, and then, O-ring was finally made by hot press molding and oven curing. The weight loss was calculated and morphology was observed for each atmosphere and temperature by a digital weighing machine and SEM. As results, it was confirmed the weight loss and related morphology were meaningfully different according to the cure type of PFE, filler system, and the species of remote plasma.

  • Rubber o-rings are produced by conventional injection molding methods. In this case, products that are not normally molded are determined to be defective. However, if images acquired during image-based reading are read as original, there is a problem of poor accuracy. We have thus learned from convolutional neural networks using adaptive binarization and Convex Hull algorithms by extracting only rubber oring parts from the original images through pre-processing. During the test process, it was confirmed that the defect detection performance of the learning method applied pre-processing was better than the standard suggested.

  • Intermittent CSR testing was used to investigate the degradation of a hydrogenated NBR(HNBR) O-rings, and also the prediction of its life-time. The cure system of HNBR O-ring was controlled as sulfur cure and peroxide cure system. An intermittent CSR jig was designed taking into consideration the O-ring's environment under use. The testing allowed observation of the effects of friction, heat loss, and stress relaxation by the Mullins effect. Degradation of O-rings by thermal aging was observed between 100 and $120^{\circ}C$. In the temperature range of $100-120^{\circ}C$, O-rings showed linear degradation behavior and satisfied the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy of HNBR-S was about 70.6 kJ/mol. From Arrhenius plots, predicted life-times of HNBR-S O-ring were 31.1 years and 33.7 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. In case of HNBR-P, the activation energy was about 72.1kJ/mol, and predicted life-times were 34.0 years and 36.5 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. The peroxide cure system showed slower degradation rate and higher activation energy than the sulfur cure system.

  • Reproducibility obtained by a minimum-volume cell for photoacoustic (PA) signals is strongly dependent upon the sealing materials and sealing efficiency. Therefore, we have proposed, designed, and constructed an apparatus to enhance the sealing efficiency, and we have examined the reproducibility of amplitude and phase of PA signals with a minimum-volume cell. In particular, we have measured the PA signal as a function of modulation frequency for various rubber O-rings by using our apparatus. The results show that a silicon rubber O-ring can improve the reproducibility of the PA signal and phase by up to 53.4% and 80.4%, respectively, compared to that obtained by using the conventional sealing material, vacuum grease.

  • The function of O-ring seals is to prevent leakage during the service life of the components in which they are installed. The life prediction of O-ring is very important at various industry fields. Generally, to evaluated the long-term performance of O-ring in severe environments has applied a life prediction technique based on accelerated life test (ALT). In this work, Accelerated thermal aging test(l20, 130, 140, $150^{\circ}C$) of O-ring was applied for life prediction of O-ring. The property changes after thermal aging test was measured using TGA, DSC, FT - IR, Video Microscope and SEM. Shape parameter and life prediction were obtained using MINITAB program.

An intermittent CSR jig was designed taking into consideration the O-ring's environment under use. The testing allowed observation of the effects of friction, heat loss, and stress relaxation by the Mullins effect. Degradation of O-rings by thermal aging was observed between 60 and $160^{\circ}C$. In the high temperature of range ($100-160^{\circ}C$) O-rings showed linear degradation behavior and satisfied the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy was about 60.2 kJ/mol. From Arrhenius plots, predicted life-times were 43.3 years and 69.9 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. Based on TTS (time-temperature superposition) principle, degradation was observed at $60^{\circ}C$, and could save testing time. Between 60 and $100^{\circ}C$ the activation energy decreased to 48.3 kJ/mol. WLF(William-Landel-Ferry) plot confirmed that O-rings show non-linear degradation behavior under $80^{\circ}C$. The life-time of O-rings predicted by TTS principle was 19.1 years and 25.2 years for each failure condition. The life-time predicted by TTS principle is more conservative than that from the Arrhenius relationship.

  • As rubber products such as O-rings, which are also known as packings or toric joints, come in regular, long term contact with liquid fuel, they can eventually swell, become mechanically weakened, and occasionally crack; this diminishes both their usefulness and intrinsic lifetime and could cause leaks during the steady-state flow condition of the fuel. In this study, we evaluate the lifetime of such products through compression set tests of FKM, a family of fluorocarbon elastomer materials defined by the ASTM international standard D141; these materials have great compression, sunlight, and ozone resistance as well as a low gas absorption rate. In this process, O-rings are immersed in the liquid fuel of airtight containers that can be expressed as a compression set, and the liquid fuel leakage in a flow rig tester at variable temperatures over 12 months is investigated. Using the Power Law model, our study determined a theoretical O-ring lifetime of 2,647 years, i.e. a semi-permanent lifespan, by confirming the absence of liquid fuel leakage around the O-ring assembled fittings. These results indicate that the FKM O-rings are significantly compatible for fuel tests to evaluate long-term sealing conditions.
