  • The objective of this study was to estimate the vibration reduction capacities of a floating track system using a resilient rubber mat, and to compare the results with the track support stiffness and track impact factor of a conventional slab track system by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along a service line. The theoretically designed track support stiffness and track impact factor were compared with the measured track support stiffness and track impact factor for each tested track. The calculated and measured track support stiffness of the floating track system were found to be similar, and the floating track system satisfied the design specifications of the track impact factor. The overall vibration level and track support stiffness of the floating track system were thereupon found to be significantly lower than those of the conventional slab track system. The experimental results thus showed that the vibration reduction effect of the floating track system is greater than that of the conventional slab track.

  • Mechanical properties of rubber mat are influenced by many factors such as compounding ingredients and states of cure, process of rubber, and fillers. Our study aim is to investigate influence of N-isopropyl-N'-chloro-P-phenylene diamine antioxidant on the thermal aging and ozone cracking. In this work, the degradation of antiblastic rubber mat was studied and suggested mechanism to involve two-types of degradation, thermal-aging and ozone-cracking both of which can be contained antioxidant or non-antioxidant.

  • Rubber related geosynthetics(GS) as reinforcement and water barrier materials were manufactured by thermal bonding method and examined the their performance for applications to civil and environmental engineering fields. The spunbonded polyester nonwoven, fiber glass mat and fabric type geogrid of a high tenacity polyester filament were used as matrix and polyester film, elastomeric bitumen with SBS polymer and asphalt were used as reinforcements to manufacture the rubber related geosynthetics. A fiber glass mat and geogrid matrix GS showed more excellent mechanical properties and nonwoven and elastomeric bitumen matrix showed the more excellent permittivity. Softening points of rubber and asphalt mixture showed no difference and dimensional stability at high temperature, $120^{\circ}C$, represented no significant shrinkage. Resistance to ultraviolet of rubber related geosynthetics showed no visible alteration.

  • For the purpose of developing a new type of frictional material using scrap rubber in which rubber makes continuous phase, potassium titanate($K_2Ti_6O_{13}$) was synthesized and added to rubber matrix. Needle-typed $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ powders were obtained through the flux method using KCI salt and excess $K_2CO_3$. It was also found that the powders should be surface-treated to enhance adhesion and 10 phr of epoxy be added for the physical properties of the rubber composite.

  • In this study, polyimide(PI) nanofibers mats were prepared by electrospinning and three different fiber morphologies of random, uniaxial, and biaxial orientation were prepared by controlling the speed of drum-shaped collector and other parameters. The SEM studies reveal that the aforesaid morphologies were obtained on the nano-fibrous mats prepared. The ionic conductivity was measured using an in-plane type conductivity tester for the PI mats soaked in the mixture of 1M lithium trifluoro-methane-sulfonate and tetra-ethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The ionic conductivity was surprisingly higher for the biaxial PI mats. For the uniaxially-oriented mats, the ionic conductivity was found to be higher in the parallel direction compared to the perpendicular direction of the fiber orientation. A curious cyclic fluctuation was found in the ionic conductivity with time. The observed behavior was explained by considering the distance between fibers and transport speed of ions used in this study.

  • Floor finishing materials such as floor coverings and floor mats can reduce floor impact noise easily. When an impact was applied to the floor, its finishing material is deformed and the impact force that was applied to the concrete slab is changed. The softer finishing materials were, the more impact force decreased. An experimental study was performed using 14 PVC floor coverings and 16 floor mats to capture the characteristics of impact force and impact noise in the residential buildings. The test results show that the impact force spectrum and the floor impact noise spectrum have a linear relationship in the case of a bare concrete slab, and the characteristics of impact force reduction are the same as those of floor impact noise reduction.

  • In this study, the new adhesion system was studied to improve the adhesion strength between polyester cord and rubber matrix. In order to enhance the adhesion strength through polyester cord's surface treatment, the NaOH solution was used. The NaOH solution concentrations of 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 5 wt.% were used in surface modifying the polyester cord. The optimum condition showing the maximum adhesion strength of polyester cord with SBR compound containing bonding agent was at NaOH concentration of 0.05 wt.% with treatment time of 10 minutes. When the NaOH solution concentration was above 1 wt.%, the polyester cord due to the excess surface modification was damaged, and resulted in breakage during the adhesion test. Also, the adhesion strength between polyester and SBR could be improved by coating the polyester cord with triallylcyanurate(TC) adhesive. The drying condition of polyester cord coated with TC attributed to the adhesion strength. The maximum adhesion strength was obtained by using the polyester cord dried at $220^{\circ}C$ rather than dried at room temperature.

  • A new piece of test equipment, the slurry wear tester (SWT), was proposed in this study to evaluate the wear behavior of rubber vulcanizate in environmental contact with slurry. Natural rubber (NR) and chloroprene rubber (CR) were chosen as the basic matrices to test the slurry wear. The fluids used to fill the chamber of the SWT were 35% HCl and NaCl solution. The Akron abrasion test was used for comparison with SWT. According to the results of the Akron abrasion test, CR vulcanizate abraded more rapidly than NR vulcanizate under same test condition. It was found that the hysteresis of rubber was key factor contribute to the wear behavior. However, the slurry wear rate of the NR and CR vulcanizates did not change significantly, even with changes in the concentration of acid and the immersion time in both HCl and NaCl solutions; the fluid decreased the friction between the abrasive paper and the specimen. It also reduced the heat generated from repeated deformation and wear debris at the surface of the SWT's abrasion arm. Thus, these phenomena affected the wear behavior of rubber vulcanizate and caused different results in the conventional Akron abrasion test. This outcome could have resulted in an incorrect analysis if the slurry wear behavior of the rubber vulcanizate was estimated by the conventional abrasion tests, which are operated under dry conditions.

  • Recently the construction of stations under railway lines and railway sections passing through central area of cities are increasing, calling for an urgent establishment of countermeasures against railway vibration and its subsequent second-phase noise. Of technology developed up to now, the most efficient countermeasure is the floating slab track, a track system isolated from the sub-structure by springs. Unfortunately, however, the system design technology and technology for key components have not yet developed in Korea. As such, in this study, the analysis and design technology of floating slab track and its vibration isolator technology can be achieved. In preparation for future demands, it is expected to raise awareness for the need of technology self-support and to make a meaningful contribution to mitigating vibration and noise produced by the next-generation high-speed railway.
