Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA)', launched in 2006, has developed a research network with 'Health and Retirement Study(HRS, US),' Studies on Health and Retirement in Europe(SHARE, EU),' and 'English Longitudinal Study of Ageing(ELSA, UK)'and tried to construct a mega data library. The KLoSA team has designed their research with focusing on the following three points, in order to use KLoSA for international comparative studies. First, KLoSA shares the key research areas such as family structure, health, employment, income, asset, subjective expectations with the comparable studies. Second, KLoSA team has developed the instrument to reflect the Korean culture and institutions. They considered the institutional characteristics in public pension and health care system and in employment practices. They also counted the cultural conventions in family life such as financial management and care exchange, Finally, KLoSA tries to capture the psychological characteristics of the Korean elderly by making the measurement scales more understandable.
This article presents strengths of Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing(CAPI) in social surveys with complicated questionnaires, from examples of a pilot and the first year surveys of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA). This study focuses on how to improve the quality of data by using CAPI and finds five strengths among others. First of all, CAPI can contribute to reducing response errors by structuring the logic and path of questionnaires, setting a response range, and maintaining response consistency. Second, CAPI enhances convenience of interviewing by allowing customized questions and automatic calculation and scoring. It also allows the 'help' function. Third, its random arrangement of questions prevents response order effect and/or questions order effect. Fourth, CAPI can raise the response rate by reducing item non-responses. Fifth, it makes it easy monitoring interviewing, thus helps supervising interviewers and modifying questionnaires when necessary. These merits of CAPI contribute to reducing possible errors in the process of interviewing, therefore improve the data quality.
This study analyses labor transition of middle-aged and elderly in Korea utilizing Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA). Then it estimates the effects of perceived job stability for the middle-aged and elderly on poverty exit based on the age group simulation. The outcomes suggest that mid-50s and over are highly vulnerable to early retirement and they suffer from unstable employment and low possibility of re-employment. The logit analysis that simulates the effects of perceived job stability on poverty exit shows that mid-50s are more likely to get off the poverty than 65 and over when they have stable jobs. These implies that labor market policies should be designed in a tailor-made manner in consideration of the age group and its characteristics. This study also suggests the introduction of progressive labor policy measures that extends retirement age, that provides with job opportunities to middle-age and elderly, and that links employment and welfare under the umbrella of income security plan for the middle-aged and elderly.
This study aims to address the effect of income on depression of Korean babyboomers according to gender. It also was to identify the moderating effect of social capital on the income-depression relationship. Researchers conducted a secondary data analysis using 6th wave of Korea longitudinal study of ageing collected in 2016. Researchers found gender differences of factors affecting depression. While, in the male model, income was not a significant factor predicting depression, it was a statistically significant factor to depression of female babyboomers. In addition, a moderating effect was found in the female model that advocacy and non governmental organization activity moderated the income-depression relationship. Therefore, it is necessary to consider gender differences for policy and service development; in specific, researchers suggest expanding elderly jobs for female babyboomers and support groups for male babyboomers.

In this study, using KLoSA data, it was verified whether subjective expectations and depression had a multi-mediated effect on life satisfaction of the elderly with dementia and mild cognitive impairment. As a result of the analysis, first, it was analyzed that the higher the IADL of the elderly with dementia and mild cognitive impairment, the lower the subjective expectation, the higher the depression, and the lower the life satisfaction. Second, it was analyzed that as the subjective expectations of the elderly with dementia and mild cognitive impairment increased, depression decreased and life satisfaction increased. Third, it was analyzed that IADL in the elderly with dementia and mild cognitive impairment not only directly affects life satisfaction, but also indirectly affects life satisfaction through subjective expectations and depression, so it has a multi-mediated effect. Therefore, it is necessary to expand subjective expectations by expanding service providers that can support daily life restrictions for the elderly with dementia and mild cognitive impairment, providing regular programs by experts to reduce depression, and establishing new national pension benefits for dependents.
The purpose of this study is to examine which factors determine fall experience among Korean elderly. To achieve this purpose, it uses the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA), wave 1 and 2. Participants aged 65 from wave 1 were selected. From wave 2, a dependent variable was selected and it was fall experiences since the first interview in 2006. Other than this variable, all independent variables were selected from wave 1. In analyses, x2 or t-test were conducted to examine whether independent variables significantly differ between falls and no falls. Then, since a dependent variable consisted of two categories-falls or no falls, multiple logistic regressions were run. Female, using hearing aid, having two diseases, having three or more diseases, depression, and exercise 5 times/a week or more elevated the odds ratios of fall experience. compared to their reference categories. Particularly, if Korean elderly had three or more diseases or depression, their likelihood of fall experience would have about 2 times higher than their reference categories. In conclusion, health practitioners should make the elderly be recognized how much these risk factors are important to falls. Also, Korean government should support Korean elderly having these risk factors to prevent them from falling.
This study analyzes the major factors affecting domestic middle-aged and elderly households' strength in consumption using the first and second wave of Korea Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA). First, household income and household liquid assets which are the strength in household consumption was analyzed and as a result, among various explaining variables, aged and elderly households with the higher education level and more household members, those in self-owned residence and in a state of labor and those which are the beneficiaries of special occupational pension scheme show relatively the same high level of strength in consumption. Then, the determining factor of household consumption was assumed based on the second wave of data and as a result, those with more yearly household disposable income and household liquid assets, those living in metropolitan cities with self-owned homes, those engaged in labor practice or which are the beneficiaries of special occupational pension scheme are more likely to have a relatively bigger contributory factor in increasing household consumption. By contrast, household's consumption decrease in the case of those with higher age, those who are the beneficiaries of national pension or those who are male.
Lately, as the problem of the aged poverty becomes a big social issue, this paper studies the problem of financial stability with respect to the income and consumption of before-and-after retirement generations. After dividing the data in Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA) into retired and non-retired groups, this study compares the difference among ageing groups by cross analysis and t-test. First, the result tells that the total personal income of retired group is lower than the one of non-retired group. Second, the public pension income benefit ratio of retired group is only 30% of it's total income, and the amount of public pension appears to be 40% of the total pension income. The benefit ratio of the personal pension income is low as about 1% in both groups, The private transfer income of the retired group takes relatively large portion in its total personal income. Third, as people gets older, financial stability gets worse because consumption does not decrease as much as the income decreases. Fourth, it is turned out that the expectation of old life supporting from nation is low in both groups. Fifth, the factors that affects the income of the public pension in the retired group are gender, age, education, and health status, when compared with the factors to the personal total income of the non-retired group. In terms of policy, this paper emphasizes the needs of the intensification of the public pension and the support for the revitalization of the personal pension.
This study is a data analysis study to identify the factors influencing the prevalence and risk factors for falls of older adults with dementia in Korea. Using the data of the 7th Aging Research Panel in 2018, 119 people were enrolled. We used response data on the dementia-related factors that is the duration of dementia and whether or not activity of daily living was restricted due to dementia. For comorbid diseases, data on hypertension, diabetes, and obesity were used. For statistical analysis of the collected data, logistic regression analysis was performed using SPSS statistics 22.0. Dementia-related factors and comorbidities of the analyzed subjects had a significant effect on the falling index. In particular, it was found that the influence was greatest in the order of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, daily life restrictions due to dementia, and the duration of dementia. This study is meant to identify factors that should be prioritized in the composition of a fall prevention program for the elderly with dementia. Based on the findings of this study, strategies for preventing falls due to the duration of dementia and limiting daily life, intensive management of high-risk groups for falls due to comorbid diseases, and training in the use of safety aids such as walking aids will be required in the care of the elderly with dementia,
Objective : This study analyzed the correlation between cognitive function and oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL). Methods : Demographic and clinical characteristics were extracted and utilized for subjects aged 45 years or older who participated in the 8th Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging in 2020. The dependent variable was the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index, and the independent variable was the level of cognitive function classified by the Mini-Mental State Examination scores. The analysis method used inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). Then, the association between cognitive function and OHQoL was analyzed by multiple regression analysis. Results : Among the participants, 4,367 (71.40%) had normal cognition, 1,155 (18.89%) had moderate cognitive impairment, and 594 (9.71%) had severe cognitive impairment. As a result of analysis by applying IPTW, there was a negative correlation between the cognitive function group and OHQoL (normal vs. moderate: β = -2.534, p < .0001; normal vs. severe: β = -2.452, p < .0001). Conclusion : After propensity score matching, mild cognitive impairment showed a more negative association than severe cognitive impairment. Therefore, patients with cognitive impairment require oral health management education to improve OHQoL regardless of the level of cognitive impairment.
