  • An experimental study has been conducted to verify the startup characteristic of a Center Body Diffuser (CBD) for simulating a low pressure environment when at high altitudes. Vacuum chamber pressure and startup characteristics of the CBD were investigated according to various geometries of the center body structure by a cold gas flow test. The test results show that the startup pressure is lowest when the center body contraction angle is approximately $15^{\circ}$. The startup characteristic of the CBDs significantly improves when the diffuser inlet length ($L_d/D_d$) is decreasing and the divergence length ($L_s$) is increasing. Additionally, it is possible to simulate various high altitude, low pressure conditions for various rocket engines that have different nozzle expansion ratios by adjusting the center body's position inside the diffuser.

  • The rocket motor of the space launch vehicle offers thrust for satellite to enter into the orbit. Characters of the solid propellant for rocket motors are affected by the space conditions such as vacuum and space radiation. The solid propellant used for such a purpose should not undergo physical, internal ballistic and energetic changes when exposed to vacuum and space radiation. This study describes the development of the solid propellant composition for the rocket motor of the space launch vehicle. Also, experimental study was conducted on supersonic diffuser in order to verify the performance of the solid propellant composition which was applied to standard motor on the ground in the vacuum condition.

  • Experimental study was conducted on cylindrical supersonic diffuser in order to investigate the effects of the ratios of diffuser area to nozzle throat area (Ad/At), diffuser area to nozzle exit area (Ad/Ae), nozzle exit area to its throat area (Ae/At), and diffuser length to its diameter (L/D), the free volume of vacuum chamber, and the relative distance between nozzle exit and diffuser inlet on the diffuser performance. The study showed that the minimum diffuser starting pressure (Po/Pa)st increased monotonically with increase in (Ad/At) as predicted by the normal shock and momentum theory models and the volume of vacuum chamber affected vacuum pressure level during diffuser operation at lower value of (Ad/Ae). The results of this investigation will be utilized in the design of real-scale high-altitude simulation test facility.

  • Abnormal odor similar with burning smell often appears at the cockpit in the beginning of ultra-sonic aircraft without air filter due to the heating of production materials remained at the bleed air duct. Sources of the odor should be removed by burn-in test before test flight in order to prevent pilot confuses order with emergency such as fire of engine. However, the present method cannot prevent abnormal odor completely at the high altitude flight because maximum temperature of flight is higher than it of burn-in-test. This paper suggests burn-in test improved based on the analysis of thermal conditions of high altitude flight. It is verified that the existing burn-in test cannot cover thermal conditions of high altitude flight due to the discontinuous flow control, high change rate of temperature per unit time and difference between limit temperature of condenser and turbine. In order to overcome the limitations of current methods, the new burn-in test with continuous flow control are suggested. The continuous flow control are achieved by ram air inlet control. The effect of suggested method are verified by ground tests and flight tests. The results show the bleed air temperature can cover the temperature of high altitude flight and prevent abnormal odor at the flight test.

  • To develop reliable dual pulse rocket motor, vacuum ignition performance at high altitude and design stability for rupture pressure of the Pulse Separation Device(PSD) are required. In this study, rupture pressure analysis method for the membrane type PSD of the dual pulse rocket motor was developed. The PSD rupture pressure formulation was derived from strain-pressure relationships. The PSD vacuum rupture test apparatus and the PSD 1 second vacuum ignition test apparatus were developed, which can simulate the high altitude vacuum environment. Rupture pressure of PSD was analyzed by conducting the PSD vacuum rupture test, and design values of PSD were derived. Finally, vacuum ignition performance and rupture pressure of the designed PSD were validated with PSD 1 second vacuum ignition test.

  • Experimental and numerical studies were performed to investigate the performance and internal flow characteristics of a supersonic second throat exhaust diffuser (STED) with back pressure ($P_a$). An ejector system was used to vary the back pressure ($P_a$) conditions. The operating gas for the STED and the ejector was high pressure nitrogen at room temperature. When the back pressure ($P_a$) at a constant nozzle inlet pressure $P_0$) decreases, the pressure recovery location moves downstream. If the pressure ratio $P_0/P_a$) is the same, even if the nozzle inlet pressures $P_0$) are different, the diffuser's internal flow pattern and starting pressure ratio ($(P_0/P_a)_{st}$) are almost the same.

  • Recently, development and application of the condition monitoring and diagnostic system for improvement of durability and reliability and reduction of operating cost is generalized in the aircraft propulsion system. Especially, for reliable operation of the UAV which is flying in high altitude more than 40,000 ft for a long time an condition monitoring system to identify faults and degradations of its propulsion system should be needed. Therefore, this work proposes an on-line condition monitoring program using MATLAB/SIMULINK. In the development phase of the program, a engine signal generation module is used to simulate real engine measuring parameters instead of the real engine. The proposed on-line condition monitoring program was applied to a real turboprop engine to validate its application capability.

  • The sophistication and diversification of mission equipment for surveillance and reconnaissance is leading to a demand for large-capacity public data links. Overseas, a T4 class(274Mbps) common data link was applied to the Global hwak, a high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle, and various research and development are being conducted in Korea. In this paper, we propose a structure in which pilot is additionally applied to improve SNR performance while minimizing data transmission rate loss in the DVB-S2 frame structure, which is a european satellite broadcasting standard, for high-capacity transmission of T4 class or higher in the common data link. For the performance evaluation of the proposed structure, the performance of the DVB-S2 was compared and analyzed by simulating the UAV data link channel environment. As a result of simulation, 0.15% of transmission rate loss occurred at T4 class transmission rate compared to DVB-S2 in the proposed structure, but improved SNR reception performance of 0.2~0.3dB was confirmed in the UAV channel environment.
