  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate shear, tensile and shear/tensile combined bond strengths(SBS, TBS, S/TBS) in various orthodontic brackets bonded to human teeth with chemically cured adhesive (Ortho-one, Bisco, USA). Five types of metal brackets with various bracket base configurations (Micro-Loc base(Tomy, Japan), Chessboard base(Daesung, Korea), Non-Etched Foil Mesh base(Dentarum, Germany), Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base(Ortho Organiners, USA), Integral base(Unitek, USA)) were used in this study. Shear, tensile and shear/tensile combined bond strengths according to the direction of force were measured by universal testing machine. The bracket base surface after bond strength test were examined by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The assessment of resin remnant on bracket base surface was carried out by ARI(adhesive remnant index). The results obtained were summarized as follows, 1. In all brackets, SBS was in the greatest value(p<0.05), TBS was in 50% level and S/TBS was in 30% level of SBS. 2. In bond strength, Micro-Loc base bracket showed the maximum bond strength($SBS:22.86{\pm}1.37kgf,\;TBS:11.37{\pm}0.42kgf,\;S/TBS:6.69{\pm}0.34kgf$) and Integral base bracket showed the minimum bond strength($SBS:10.52{\pm}1.27kgf,\;TBS:4.27{\pm}1.08kgf,\;S/TBS:2.94{\pm}0.58kgf) (p<0.05). 3. In bond strength per unit area, Integral base bracket showed the minimum value, Micro-Loc base and Chessboard base brackets were in similar value(p>0.05). Non-Etched Foil Mesh base and Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base bracket were similar in SBS and TBS(p>0.05), but Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base bracket was greater than Non-Etched Foil Mesh base bracket in S/TBS(p<0.05). 4. Bond failure sites were mainly between bracket base and adhesive, therefore ARI scores were low.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue on the shear bond strength(SBS) in orthodontic brackets bonded to human premolars with chemically cured adhesive(Mono-$Lok^2$, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics). Two types of metal brackets (Ormesh, Microloc) and three types of ceramic brackets (Fascination, Starfire, Transcend 2000) were used in this study. The $10^6$ loadcycles of $|7.4{\times}10{^2}sin2{\pi}ft|g{\cdot}cm$ and the 1,000 thermocycles of 15 second dwell time each in $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ baths were acturated as mechanical and thermal fatigue stress, and SBS were measured after each fatigue test. The fracture sites were examined by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows, 1. In static shear bond test, Fascination brackets showed the maximum SBS($20.78\pm3.45$ MPa) and Microloc brackets showed the minimum SBS($14.88\pm3.10$ MPa). Fascination and Starfire brackets showed significantly greater SBS than Microloc brackets(P<0.05). 2. In mechanical fatigue test, Fascination brackets showed the maximum SBS ($20.19\pm3.45$ MPa) and Starfire brackets showed the minimum SBS($9.10\pm8.33$ MPa). The SBS or Transcend 2000 brackets(P<0.01) and Starfire brackets(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^6$ loadcycles. 3. In thermocycling test, Ormesh brackets showed the maximum SBS ($19.36\pm2.76$ MPa) and Starfire brackets showed the minimum SBS($11.94\pm6.86$ MPa). The SBS of Transcend 2000(P<0.01), Microloc and Starfire brackets(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^3$ thermocycles. 4. Failure sites of thermocycling groups were similar to those of static groups but after mechanical fatigue test, Ormesh and Transcend 2000 brackets failed at the bracket/resin interface and Microloc brackets failed within adhesive. Facination brackets failed at the enamel/resin interface irrespective of experimental condition.

  • In this study, finite element analyses of crack propagation along a sinusoidal interface are performed by using cohesive elements. BK law is used for cohesive zone to consider mixed mode traction-separation relation at the crack tip on a sinusoidal interface of a double cantilever beam specimen. The shape of a sinusoidal interface crack and the cohesive strength and the cohesive energies in mixed mode cohesive laws are varied in numerical experiments, and load-displacement curves at the ends of a double cantilever beam specimen are obtained to investigate the crack propagation behavior along a sinusoidal interface.

  • Interfacial evaluation, damage sensing and cure monitoring of single carbon fiber/thermo setting composite with different curing processes were investigated using electro-micromechanical test. After curing, the residual stress was monitored by measurement of electrical resistance and then compared to various curing processes. In thermal curing case, matrix tensile strength, modulus and interfacial shear strength were higher than those of ultraviolet curing case. The shrinkage measured during thermal curing occurred significantly by matrix shrinkage and residual stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient. The apparent modulus measured in the thermal curing indicated that mechanical and interfacial properties were highly improved. The reaching time to the same stress of thermal curing was faster than that of UV curing case.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of 4 self etching primers by measuring the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and examining the failure pattern of bracket-tooth interfaces. Methods: Seventy-five, defect-free, premolars were randomly assigned into five groups: control group (37% phosphoric acid + Transbond XT primer) and self etching primer treated groups (Transbond Plus self etching primer, Unifil bond, Clearfil SE bond, and Adhese). The shear bond strength was measured with a universal testing machine and the amount of residual adhesive remaining on the brackets after debonding was assessed by the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Results: The results showed that the groups conditioned with self etching primer had significantly lower shear bond strength than the control group (p < 0.05), although clinically acceptable. However, there were no significant differences in shear bond strength among the self etching primer groups (p > 0.05). Evaluation of the ARI scores indicated there was less resin remnant on the teeth in the groups conditioned with self etching primers, although not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that all four of the self etching primers have shown acceptable bond strength for clinical use.

  • In spite of high resistant to corrosion and its strength, over the last two decades, concerns still remain about the durability of FRP materials under severe environmental and thermal exposures. In this paper, authors experimentally examine the combined degradation by thermal and chemical attacks in heterogeneous FRP rebar be made up with various fibers and resins. Five types of Carbon, Glass and Hybrid FRP rebars had manufactured by different process and surface patterns are adopted for the experiments such as weight change, interlaminar shear strength, SEM and FT-IR analysis. FRP specimens were immersed in alkaline or distilled solution up to 150 days and then thermal exposed on 60, 100, 150 and $300^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. From the test results, the degradation of FRP bars are influnced by the resin type and manufacturing process as well as the fiber, and ILSS of exposed FRP bar in solutions is slightly increased in initial stage and then decresed with the passing of immersed time. But, in this test, it is observed that the discrepancy of ILSS between degraded by alkaline solution and distilled water is negligible value.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of molecular formation of adhesive on interface characterization of thermoplastic composites. Carbonfiber/polyetherketoneketone (CF/PEKK) thermoplastic composites were fusion bonded and PEEK, PEI adhesive bonded using a high-temperature oven welding process. In addition, lap shear strength test and fracture surface analysis using a digital optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were performed. As a result, the adhesive bonding method improved adhesion strength with interphase having increased molecular formation of ether groups, ketone groups, and imide groups which mainly constitutes the CF/PEKK and adhesives. Furthermore, it was found that the use of PEEK containing more ether groups and ketone groups forms a more strongly bonded interphase and enhances the adhesive force of the CF/PEKK composites.

  • In this work, the effect of fiber array direction including $0^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}$ was investigated for mechanical properties of basalt fiber-reinforced composites. Mechanical properties of the composites were studied using interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) measurements. The cross-section morphologies of basalt fiber-reinforced epoxy composites were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, the surface properties of basalt fibers were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From the results, it was observed that acid treated basalt fiber-reinforced composites showed significantly higher mechanical interfacial properties than those of untreated basalt fiber-reinforced composites. These results indicated that the hydroxyl functional groups of basalt fibers lead to the improvement of the mechanical interfacial properties of basalt fibers/epoxy composites in the all array direction.

  • This study was to compare the microshear bond strength $({\mu}SBS)$ of light- and chemically cured composites to enamel coupled with four 2-step self-etch adhesives and also to evaluate the incompatibility between 2-step self-etch adhesives and chemically cured composite resin. Crown segments of extracted human molars were cut mesiodistally, and a 1 mm thickness of specimen was made. They were assigned to four groups by adhesives used: SE group (Clearfil SE Bond) AdheSE group (AdheSE), Tyrian group (Tyrian SPE/One-Step Plus), and Contax group (Contax) Each adhesive was applied to a cut enamel surface as per the manufacturer's instruction. Light-cured (Filtek Z250) or chemically cured composite (Luxacore Smartmix Dual) was bonded to the enamel of each specimen using a Tygon tube. After storage in distilled water for 24 hours, the bonded specimens were subjected to ${\mu}SBS$ testing with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. The mean ${\mu}SBS$ (n=20 for each group) was statistically compared using two-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD, and t test at 95% level. Also the interface of enamel and composite was evaluated under FE-SEM. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The ${\mu}SBS$ of the SE Bond group to the enamel was significantly higher than that of the AdheSE group, the Tyrian group, and the Contax group in both the light-cured and the chemically cured composite resin (p < 0.05). 2. There was not a significant difference among the hdheSE group, the Tyrian group, and the Contax group in both the light-cured and the chemically cured composite resin. 3. The ${\mu}SBS$ of the light-cured composite resin was significantly higher than that of the chemically cured composite resin when same adhesive was applied to the enamel (p < 0.05). 4. The interface of enamel and all 2-step self-etch adhesives showed close adaptation, and so the incompatibility of the chemically cured composite resin did not show.

  • A jute fiber surface was modified with argon gas in a cylinder type RF plasma generator to enhance the interfacial bond strength and to optimize the plasma treatment condition. The plasma power, gas pressure, and treat time were varied to figure out any effect of those parameters on the morphology and mechanical strength of jute fibers, and the interfacial bond strength for a model composite with polypropylene resin. As the severity of plasma treatment was increased, the surface of jute fibers became rougher. Gas pressure was less effective in roughening of the surface compared with those of treat time and plasma power. Approximately 25% drop in tensile strength of jute fibers was observed for the parameters of treat time and plasma power, while little deterioration was found for gas pressure, with increasing the severity. Based on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS), the optimum plasma treatment condition was determined to be treat time of 30 s, plasma power of 40 W, and gas pressure of 30 mTorr.
