  • The quality characteristics of black garlic vinegar produced by acetic acid fermentation were analyzed over a 25 day period. Black garlic vinegar was produced using black garlic 3, 6, 9 and 12 folds with water, and initial alcohol concentrations of 6~12%. The pH values of the vinegar samples were in range of 3.85~4.46 after 25 days fermentation, and the sugar contents were highest after 9 days of fermentation ($12.00{\sim}13.50^{\circ}Brix$). The total polyphenol concents of vinegars were in the range of 20.65~52.04 mg/100 mL 25 days fermentation. Pyrogallol and vanillic acid were detected in the completely fermented vinegars, and their contents increased with black garlic content. Five organic acids (lactic acid, acetic acid, citric acid, succinic acid and propionic acid) were detected after 25 days of fermentation, with the total amount of organic acids being 5,327.34~6,307.64 mg/100 mL, and the total abetic acid contents beging the highest of the organic acids at 4208.90~5,570.29 mg/100 mL. After 25 days of fermentation, the total minerals contents were higher, and depending on the quantity of black garlic added. Of the minerals, the of potassium content was the highest (366.23~1,619.67 mg/L).

  • This study is performed to analyze the effects of CASB by applying the superplasticizer combined CASB on the ultra high strength mortar and concrete that uses different mineral admixture depending on whether the silica fume was used and the results are summarized below. From the characteristics of Fresh mortar and concrete, the fluidity was lower in B2-CASB than B2-PC from the mixing of CASB and based on the viscosity of the mortar and concrete in the binary proportion but in the ternary proportion, B3-CASB showed a larger fluidity than B3-PC because of a reduction in the restriction level due to the effects of an improvement of particle size distribution. The compression strength was higher in ternary proportion than in binary proportion and higher in CASB than in PC from the characteristics of hardening mortar and concrete and this is analyzed as a result of increased minuteness from the calcium silicate hydrates produced from the pozzolan reaction of a mineral admixture, SF, and also the charging effects of capillary pore of CASB. Overall, when using the nanomaterial, CASB in combination with a superplasticizer, the fluidity and the strength aspects of the ternary proportion of ultra high strength mortar and concrete with silica fume may be improved to a higher quality.

  • To evaluate of biological activity of Chambirum ($Amaranthus$ $lividus$) $in$ $vitro$ and $in$ $vivo$, we investigated the free radical scavenging activity of its extracts $in$ $vitro$ and the effect of lyophilized powder on the serum lipid profile of rats fed cholesterol. ABTS, DPPH, and NO radical scavenging activities were tested from water and 80% ethanol extracts of Chambirum, and biological activities of the ethanol extracts were significantly higher than the water extracts. The total lipid and total cholesterol content of serum, atherogenic index (AI), and cardiac risk factor (CRF) were decreased significantly for the groups fed with a 5% and 10% supplement of Chambirum powder (HCA1 and HCA2) in comparison with the group fed cholesterol (HC). Triglyceride content decreased drastically in the HCA2 group, while its content was not decreased in the other group. HDL-cholesterol content was elevated in the HCA1 and HCA2 groups, but was not significantly different to the supplemented amount of Chambirum powder. GPT and ${\gamma}$-GTP activities were decreased significantly in the groups fed with Chambirum powder compared to the HC group. And the content of the lipid peroxide level was the same trend. Therefore, these results give evidence that Chambirum might be useful in the control of induced disorders by dietary cholesterol and/or lipids.

  • Protected crop production has been popular in Korea as well as in other countries. Intensive and continuous monitoring and control of the environment, which is labor- and time-consuming, is critical for stable crop productivity and profitability, otherwise damage could be happened due to unfavorable ambient and soil conditions. In the study, potential utilization of smartphone and remote access application in protected crop production environment was investigated. Tested available remote access applications provided functions of mouse click (left and right buttons), zooming in and out, and screen size and color resolution control. Wi-Fi data communication speeds were affected by signal intensity and user place. Data speeds at high (> -55 dBm), medium (-70~-56 dBm), and low (< -71 dBm) signal intensity levels were statistically different (${\alpha}=0.05$). Means of data communication speed were 6.642, 4.923, and 2.906 Mbps at hot spot, home, and office, respectively, and the differences were significant at a 0.05 level. Smart phone and remote access application were applied successfully to remote monitoring (inside temperature and humidity, and outside precipitation, temperature, and humidity) and control (window and light on/off) of green house environment. Response times for monitoring and control were less than 1 s at all places for high signal intensity (> -55 dBm), but they were increased to 1 ~ 10 s at home and office and to 10 ~ 30 s at hot spot for low signal intensity (< -71 dBm) for Wi-Fi. Results of the study would provide useful information for farmers to apply these techniques for their crop production.

  • Annealing were performed to investigate the behaviors of the residual stress remaining on the member of a steel structure. According to the fatigue test, the welding part has higher fatigue crack growth rate than the base metal part because the hardening of welding part reduce fracture toughness. However, the heat treatment decrease the hardness and increase the resistance to failure. Thus, the fatigue crack growth rate is improved and it reaches the minimum at $650^{\circ}C$. Elber' s equation includes the effect of the crack-close so that this equation provides a lower the fatigue crack growth rate than Paris-Erdogan' s equation, the Elber's curves show no significant difference to indentify the effect of the residual stress. The Pop loading along the crack length increases as the hardness goes higher. The heat treatment not only decrease the hardness, and the fatigue crack growth rate, but increase the absorption energy and fracture toughness on the member of a steel structure. As the result, the heat treatment produces the resistant ability to cracking which can reduce the degree of danger to failure.

  • At ruthenium (Ru) catalyst was exposed from the atmosphere, the degree of catalyst activation decreased. The change of catalyst activity with the number of days of exposure to air for the Ru catalyst was confirmed using the surface tension method quantitatively. Mechanical properties and surfactant change after polymerization by DCPD using Ru catalyst for each air exposure day was evaluated. The Ru catalyst mixed with a dilution agent was exposed in the air and color was monitored for each day. Surface tension was measured using Wilhelmy and PTFE and associated with different catalyst activities. Heat was measured in real time during polymerizing DCPD with Ru catalyst. After polymerization, tensile strength was measured for p-DCPD and the change of material property was measured. Interfacial properties were also evaluated via microdroplet pull-out tests between glass fiber and p-DCPD. The surface tension was stable until the 4 days (33 dyne/cm) whereas the surface energy increased at the 10 days (34 dyne/cm), which could be correlated with oxidation of the catalyst. Tensile property and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was also stable until the 4 days (tensile strength: 38 MPa and IFSS: 26 MPa) whereas the mechanical property decrease at 10 days (tensile strength: 15 MPa and IFSS: 3 MPa) dramatically.

  • The hemangioma, a benign proliferation of blood vessel, is the most common tumor of infancy and childhood. In many instances, the lesion probably represents a hamartoma or malformation rather than a true neoplasm. In the oral cavity, common sites are lips, followed by tongue, buccal mucosa and palate. Clinical characteristics appear as a flat or raised reddish-blue lesion and are generally solitary. They are classified on the basis of their histological appearance into capillary, mixed, cavernous or a sclerosing variety. A 6-year-old male of this case was referred to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Chonnam National University with a chief complaint of swelling lesion on gingiva. The strawberry appearance mass was detected by clinical examination on attached gingiva at the upper left primary lateral incisor and canine. Surgical excision and biopsy were carried out for histological examination and the lesion was diagnosed with a capillary hemangioma. The risk of recurrence after this therapy is rare, and there is no malignant transformation. Despite their benign origins and behaviour, hemangiomas in the region of oral cavity are always clinically important to the dental profession because of bleeding tendency.

  • Bronchobiliary fistula is a rare disorder consisting of an abnormal communication between the bronchial tree and the biliary duct. In Western countries, trauma, postoperative biliary stenosis, and biliary lithiasis are the predominant causative factors of bronchobiliary fistula. Bilioptysis (bile stained sputum) is a pathognomic finding for bronchobiliary fistula. To date, there are just a few reported cases of bronchobiliary fistula after sclerosis of a liver cyst. We describe the case of a 74-year-old woman who developed bronchobiliary fistula after sclerosing therapy of a liver cyst. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of bilioptysis and the chest and dynamic liver CT findings. The patient was successfully treated with antibiotics and percutaneous transhepatic catheter drainage.

  • Polymer substrates were fabricated by using poly (phenylene ether) as a base resin, N,N'-m-phenylenedimaleimide (PDMI) as a crosslinking agent and decabromodiphenylethane as a flame retardant. The effects of crosslinking agent and flame retardant on physical properties such as dielectric property of the substrate were investigated. Thermal curing feature of PDMI with or without an initiator was analyzed by DSC, and then, PPE-PDMI test compositions were designed based on this result. Composite sheets were cast by film coater, laminated under vacuum and pressure, and then, the changes of dielectric constant, dielectric loss, peel strength, solder heat resistance and inflammability according to increasing amount of PDMI and flame retardant were evaluated, Dielectric constant and dielectric loss showed increasing trend with increasing amount of PDMI and flame retardant, but solder heat resistance and inflammability were improved. Peel strength was obtained higher than 1 kN/m when PDMI above 10 wt% was added, but slightly decreased as the amount of flame retardant increased. From the measured gel contents, the reaction mechanism of PPE-PDMI system was deduced to the formation of network structure by crosslinking PDMI with PPE rather than the formation of semi-IPN structure. In conclusion, the polymer composite substrate materials with dielectric constant of 2.52$\sim$2.65 and dielectric loss below 0.002 at 1 GHz were obtained and they will be proper for high frequency applications.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Pleurotus eryngii fruiting body on blood glucose and cholesterol levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used as experimental animals and experimental groups were divided into three groups, consisting of two control groups (diabetic and non-diabetic) and one P. eryngii group. Animals were fed experimental diets for 2 weeks. The values of died and water intake of P. eryngii group were lower than those of diabetic control group. The body weights of both groups after 2 weeks decreased by 18% as compared with initial values. The level of blood glucose decreased significantly by 16.9% in P. eryngii group as compared with diabetic control group, and there was a significant difference in glycosylated hemoglobin (GHb) level between both groups. The levels of total-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol in plasma and atherosclerotic index were not significantly different between both groups. However the level of HDL-cholesterol increased significantly by 28% in P. eryngii group as compared with diabetic control group. These results suggested that fruiting bodies of P. eryngii exert blood glucose-lowering effect in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
