This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic fertilizers on the growth and root yield of Achyranthes japonica N. from 1995 to 1996. Four organic fertilizers were applied: rice straw manure (RSM), fermented rice straw manure (FRSM), mixed oil cake manure (MOCM) and mighty soil manure (MSM). Organic matter, available phosphate, $K_2O$, CaO, and MgO of soil increased in all plots with the addition of organic fertilizers, specifically with MOCM application. The highest contents of total nitrogen were 6.16% for MOCM and the available phosphate contents were very high in all of organic fertilizers except MSM. RSM and MSM with C/N ratios of 22.5, 17.7, respectively, were easily decomposed but C/N ratios of FRSM and MOCM, which were considered as irresolvable organic fertilizers, were 40.9 and 8.4, respectively. FRSM and MOCM applications increased emergence rate and improved the growth characters of shoot and root parts of plants compared to those of N - P - K fertilization. The highest dry root yield resulted from FRSM 20% and MOCM 26% treatment. There were significantly positive correlations between the growth characters of shoot, root parts of plants and dry root yield in A. japonica grown under organic fertilizer applications.
There are two cultivars, 'Jeongsun' and 'Mishima' of Bupleurum falcatum L., a medicinal plant, have been cultivated in Korea. Two cultivars were evaluated and compared in details for major growth characters and their seasonal changes. Jeongsun was higher in stem length and root weight per plant, and earlier in maturity than Mishima, while Mishima was higher in top weight per plant and the ratio of outer phloem layer(OPL) to whole root, and more in branch number. Coefficients of variations of most growth characters were higher in Mishima than in Jeongsun. In relationship between root and shoot growth characters, root weight, root diameter, etc. were positively correlated with stem thickness, top weight, branch number, etc. in both cultivars. In comparison of seasonal changes for growth characters between two cultivars, stem length and node number were almost not increased after September, but root length and branch number tended to increase until November. There were continuous increases of top and root weights in both cultivars after September. Increase rates of top and root weights were higher in Mishima and Jeongsun, respectively. The weight ratio of root part to whole plant in Jeongsun and the ratio of OPL to whole root in Mishima were higher during whole growth stages; especially Mishima showed their continuous increases after October. Jeongsun flowered earlier (August 17) than Mishima (September 16) by one month. Complete flowering date was on August 30 in Jeongsun and on September 30 in Mishima. Basic difference in plant growth between two cultivars was maturity, so shoot growth almost stopped after October in Jeongsun, and continued vegetative growth until November in Mishima with late flowering habit. These results indicate that higher root weight in Jeongsun is due to its earlier flowering character leading to relatively longer time for root growth, as compared with Mishima.

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of soil moisture content and planting depth on the growth of 2-year old ginseng plant. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. When the ginseng seedlings were planted in soil by 4 to 5cm in depth, the length of leaflet and stem and the number of branch roots were significantly decreased but the stem diameter was increased. 2. Highly significant quadratic regressions were shown between soil moisture content and the growth of the stem, leaf and root of the ginseng plant. 3. Estimated amount of soil moisture for the maximum growth of the stem was 75% of field capacity, and that for length and width of the leaflet was about 65 to 66% of field capacity. Estimated soil moisture for the maximum growth of the root was about 56 to 58% of field capacity and that for increase in root weight was about 60 to 61% of field capacity. 4. Estimated soil moisture content for best growth of ginseng roots was 1 to 5% lower when the seedling was planted in 3cm depth compared with 2cm in depth. And when the amount of soil moisture was 31% of field capacity, the deep planting was adequate for good root growth. 5. Significant correlations were resulted between the dry weight of roots and the leaf length, the leaf width and the dry weight of stem and leaves. And also, significant correlations were obtained between the ratio of root dry weight to root fresh weight and the stem length, the leaf length, the leaf width and the dry weight of stem and leaves.
To obtain basic information concerning the soybean cultivar differences of physiological and ecological responses to soil pH to select and breed stably higher yielding cultivars, and to improve cultural management of soil differing in pH, the responses of soybean plants in growth, grain yield, nodule formation and its activity, and major chemical compositions of soybean plants were investigated using six cultivars and two levels of soil pH 5 and 7 of the pot and field experimental soil in Suwon, 1985. Acidic soil condition suppressed overall vegetative growth of soybean plants and thereby decreased stem length, number of nodes, leaf area, dry weight of the plants, root activity, nodulation and nodule activity, the content of allantoin nitrogen, total nitrogen, phosphorous, calcium, and magnesium of the plants. Due to the such responses of soybean plants to the acid soil, grain yield also decreased along with less grains per plant. However, the little difference in growth and yield of the cultivar Janbaeglcong in response to soil pH is considered to be a good source of breeding materials tolerant to acidic soil condition. In this regard Bongeui and Oialkong also were relatively stable in the growth and grain yield under the different soil acidity conditions.
This study examined the effects of delayed harvest of Miscanthus on its biomass yield and growth characteristics. The trial was conducted at a 5-year-old demonstration field, using Miscanthus sacchariflorus cv. Geodae 1 and Miscanthus ${\times}$ giganteus. Harvesting was carried out using a mower, baler, and bale picker driven by a 5-ton tractor. Harvesting dates were the $1^{st}$, $10^{th}$, and $17^{th}$ of April, which respectively corresponded with the first, mid, and last emerging dates of new shoots. The sequential changes in stem number due to delayed harvesting were investigated on April $29^{th}$, May $27^{th}$, July $22^{nd}$, and October $30^{th}$, which corresponded to the juvenile, mid, luxuriant, and senescence stem stages, respectively. Soil penetration resistance, biomass yield, and growth characteristics were investigated on October $30^{th}$. There was no difference in soil penetration resistance at a depth of 10 cm, but it increased at a depth of 20 cm in proportion to the delayed harvesting time. The sequential change in stem number due to delayed harvesting was greater in M. sacchariflorus cv. Geodae 1 than in M. ${\times}$ giganteus. In M. sacchariflorus cv. Geodae 1, which was harvested on the last emerging date of new shoots, the stem number was $169/m^2$ in the mid stage but decreased to $70/m^2$ in the luxuriant stage. The diameter of newly developed rhizomes, stem height, and biomass yield decreased in the two Miscanthus species due to delayed harvesting. The ratio of Miscanthus headings, which is a critical characteristic for landscape use, also decreased due to delayed harvesting. Heading of M. sacchariflorus cv. Geodae 1 was not observed in plots harvested on the mid and last emerging dates of new shoots.
To get the basic information about ginseng seedling production, yields of ginseng seedling and soil physico-chemical components in 32 fields of Yang-Jik and 19 fields of Ban-Yang-Jik nursery were investigated. Germination rate is $78.5{\pm}3.0%$, $77.8{\pm}2.8%$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. Rate of number of mature seedlings to number of seeds planted is $62{\pm}13.5%$, $53{\pm}12.6%$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. Rate of number of available seedlings to number of seeds planted (Rate of available seedling) is $42{\pm}12.5%$, $26{\pm}12.1%$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. The number of available seedlings per Kan (Kan means $180{\times}90cm$ area) is $627{\pm}187$, $368{\pm}182$ in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. Rate of number of unusable seedlings to number of mature seedlings is 34%, 51% in Yang-Jik and Ban-Yang-Jik. It showed the negative correlation between amount of coarse sand and stem height, and central leaf length, on the other hand, possitive correlation between amount of extremely fine sand, and stem height, and central leaf length respectively. Rate of available seedling was positively correlated with amount of medium, fine and extremely fine sand, whereas negatively correlated with amount of coarse sand in Yang-Jik. Root weight per seedling was positively correlated with amount of medium, fine and extremely fine sand. Contents of organic matter, available phosphate and potassium in Ban-Yang-Jik were higher than those of Yang-Jik, but content of lime was higher in Yang-Jik compared to that of Ban-Yang-Jik. Possitive correlations were showed between leaf area per seedling and content of organic matter, and between stem height and content of lime in Yang-Jik. Root weight per seedling was positively correlated with content of organic matter and magnesium in Ban-Yang-Jik, but there is no correlation between any of soil chemical components and root weight in Yang-Jik.

Scutellaria baicalensis G. was cultivated in plots of different soil textures which were sand loam(SL), loam(L) and clay loam(CL). Also three fertilizer conditions were used; non application (NA)treatment, rice straw manure(RSM) treatment and N-P-K, chemical fertilization(CF) treatment. The chemical-physical properties, such as organic matter, available phosphate, $K_2O$, CaO, clay contents and porosity ratio in CL plot with RSM application were the most proper in CL plot and RSM application for the culture of S. baicalensis plants. RSM had very high contents of total nitrogen, 2.25% and C/N ratios, 21.4. Thus the growth of shoot and root in loam plot with RSM treatment were greater compared to that of CL plot with NA treatment. Whereas, The highest baicalin, baicalein and wogonin contents in roots were found in CL plot with RSM treatment. There was significantly positive correlation between aerial and underground parts of plant, yield and contents of T-N, $K_2O$ but negatively correlated with the contents of baicalin, baicalein and wogonin in S. baicalensis roots.

Direct seeding of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) has a problem of low yield including poor establishment. This poor establishment results from poor quality seed, poor seedbed preparation, seedling pests, poor sowing technique and high soil temperature. This study sought to establish the age at which sorghum seedlings can be transplanted with minimal effects on grain yield. Transplants were raised in 128 nursery tray pot. Five seedling ages were established by transplanting at 10 (T10), 15 (T15), 20 (T20), 25 (T25) and 30 (T30) days after planting (DAP). The treatment combinations were arranged in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times with an individual plot size of $6{\times}5m^2$. Each plot had five ridges with a planting space of $0.60{\times}0.20m^2$ at one plants per stand. Results showed that seedling age on transplanting significantly affected growths and yields to sorghum after transplanting. Plant heights and diameters of transplants at T15 were longer than the other transplants. Conclusively, The advantages of this practice were better control of crop density and greater yields; either to fill gaps after emerging and thinning of crops or to compensate for a growth period that was too short for a complete crop cycle.
This study was carried out to define the variations of important quantitative characters and correlations among them accoding to the planted location under the shadow by planting density. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Growth of leaf and stem of 6 rows and 8 rows planting plots was decreased at front and back rows, but that of root was increased at front row and also decreased at back row. However, at 4 rows planting plots, front row was better for the growth of leaf, stem and root. 2. Average root weight of 6 rows planting plot was 34.29g but that of 8 rows planting plot was ]8.20 g. And total weight of root per unit area was increased and quality of ginseng was better in 6 rows planting plot compaired with 8 rows. 3. Variation by planting locations under the shadow was smallest in stem diameter and highest in root length at 8 row planting plot, but at 6 rows planting plot, that was smallest in leaf blade and greatest in stem length. However, in 4 rows plant ing plot, variation of leaf length was smallest and that of root weight biggest. 4. In all Planting densities, root weight was significantly correlated with root diameter and high correlation was recognized between root diameter and stem diameter. 5. Rate of variations of all characters among plant individuals was different by planting location and that of correlations between quantitative Characters too.

This study was carried out to understand the effect of sowing date on growth characteristics, flower duration of a total of 6 domestic rapeseed cultivars, "Sunmang", "Tammiyuchae", "Tamlayuchae", "Naehanyuchae", "Yongsanyuchae" and "Hallayuchae" with different sowing dates (25 Sept., 5 Oct., 15 Oct., 25 Oct., 5 Nov.) in Muan, Jeollanamdo, Republic of Korea. The results obtained were summarized as the follows: The number of seedling stand after overwintering was decreased in all 6 cultivars. It changed little until 5 Oct., and then showed continuously largely decrease as the sowing date being delayed. As the sowing date was being delayed, plant height was decreased while Silique length and thousand seed weight were increased. Seed yield in all 6 cultivars decreased almost linearly with late sowing date. In correlation analysis between the delaying sowing date and growth characteristics, it was inversely correlated with plant height ($r=-0.769^{**}$), No. of branches/plant ($r=-0.760^{**}$), No. of siliqua/panicle ($r=-0.631^{**}$) and seed yield ($r=-0.946^{**}$), while showed a positive correlation with silique length (r=0.635), seed diameter ($r=0.629^{**}$) and thousand grain weight ($r=0.422^*$). No. of seeds/silique and seed set percentage were not significantly correlated with the delaying sowing date. The flower duration was long in order of Sunmang, Tammiyuchae, Yongsanyuchae, Naehanyuchae, Hallayuchae and Tamlayuchae. Varietal variation of flowering date was larger with early sowing date than with delaying sowing date. The range of flower duration across all cultivars was from 1 day of Tamlayuchae to 14 days of Sunmang according to the sowing date, and the end flowering date was able to be extended from 2 to 9 days, compared to normal date of end flowering.
