  • We perform the frequency-domain waveform inversion based on the residual-selection strategy. In the residual-selection strategy, we classify time-domain residual wavefields into several groups according to the order of absolute amplitudes. Because the residual wavefields are normalized after regularization of the gradient directions within each group, the residual-selection strategy plays a role in enhancing the small-amplitude wavefields, which contributes to improving the deep parts of inverted subsurface images. After classifying residuals in the time domain, they are transformed to the frequency domain. Waveform inversion is performed in the frequency domain using the back-propagation technique which has been popularly used in reverse-time migration. The residual-selection strategy is applied to the SEG/EAGE salt and IFP Marmousi models. Numerical results show that the residual-selection strategy yields better results than the conventional frequency-domain waveform inversion.

  • There are many parameters in prediction of forest fire spread. Among others wind and slope factors are considered to be the important parameters in spread of forest fire. Generally, all the inclined planes with same slopes can not have the same wind velocity in complex mountain area. But this effect has been disregarded in complex geometry. In this paper, wind values which have velocity and direction is calculated by applying computational fluid dynamics to the forest geometry. These results are applied for forest fire spreading algorithm with experimental Korean ROS(Rate Of Spread). Finally, the comparison between the simulation and the real forest fire has correspondence about 90%.

  • Optimal supersonic diffuser shape of integrated rocket ramjet engine was derived which maximizes the total pressure recovery. Mass flux is considered as a design constraint and the second oblique shock angle of the external ramp, the cowl-lip angle and the throat area are selected as design variables. Refined response surface method through design space transformation technique was developed and employed, and high confidence level of the regression model could be obtained. Genetic algorithm was implemented for both system optimizer and subspace regression model optimization. Virtual nozzle was located at the end of throat to adjust the back pressure. With only 20 aerodynamic analyses, optimal supersonic diffuser shape which has 14% improved total pressure recovery characteristics was successfully designed.

  • In this present study, we investigated the effect of the offset correction factor calculation method on the sulfur dioxide (SO2) column density in the SO2 retrieval algorithm of the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) launched in February 2020. The GEMS operational SO2 retrieval algorithm is the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) - Principal Component Analysis (PCA) Hybrid algorithm. In the GEMS Hybrid algorithm, the offset correction process is essential to correct the absorption effect of ozone appearing in the SO2 slant column density (SCD) obtained after spectral fitting using DOAS. Since the SO2 column density may depend on the conditions for calculating the offset correction factor, it is necessary to apply an appropriate offset correction value. In this present study, the offset correction values were calculated for days with many cloud pixels and few cloud pixels, respectively. And a comparison of the SO2 column density retrieved by applying each offset correction factor to the GEMS operational SO2 retrieval algorithm was performed. When the offset correction value was calculated using radiance data of GEMS on a day with many cloud pixels was used, the standard deviation of the SO2 column density around India and the Korean Peninsula, which are the edges of the GEMS observation area, was 1.27 DU, and 0.58 DU, respectively. And around Hong Kong, where there were many cloud pixels, the SO2 standard deviation was 0.77 DU. On the other hand, when the offset correction value calculated using the GEMS data on the day with few cloud pixels was used, the standard deviation of the SO2 column density slightly decreased around India (0.72 DU), Korean Peninsula (0.38 DU), and Hong Kong (0.44 DU). We found that the SO2 retrieval was relatively stable compared to the SO2 retrieval case using the offset correction value on the day with many cloud pixels. Accordingly, to minimize the uncertainty of the GEMS SO2 retrieval algorithm and to obtain a stable retrieval, it is necessary to calculate the offset correction factor under appropriate conditions.

  • In this study, a GIS model to simulate the behavior of surface forest fires was developed on the basis of forest fire growth prediction algorithm. This model consists of three modules for data-handling, simulation and report writing. The data-handling module was designed to interpret such forest fire environment factors as terrain, fuel and weather and provide sets of data required in analyzing fire behavior. The simulation module simulates the fire and determines spread velocity, fire intensity and burnt area over time associated with terrain slope, wind, effective humidity and such fuel condition factors as fuel depth, fuel loading and moisture content for fire extinction. The module is equipped with the functions to infer the fuel condition factors from the information extracted from digital vegetation map sand the fuel moisture from the weather conditions including effective humidity, maximum temperature, precipitation and hourly irradiation. The report writer has the function to provide results of a series of analyses for fire prediction. A performance test of the model with the 2002 Chungyang forest fire showed the predictive accuracy of 61% in spread rate.

  • Moving-target detection using frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar systems has recently attracted attention. Detection tasks are more challenging with noise resulting from signals reflected from strong static objects or small moving objects(clutter) within radar range. Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) approach for FMCW radar to detect moving objects in noisy environments is employed in this paper. In detail, compensation and calibration are first applied to raw input signals. Then, RPCA via Gradient Descents (RPCA-GD) is adopted to model the low-rank noisy background. A novel update algorithm for RPCA is proposed to reduce the computation cost. Finally, moving-targets are localized using an Automatic Multiscale-based Peak Detection (AMPD) method. All processing steps are based on a sliding window approach. The proposed scheme shows impressive results in both processing time and accuracy in comparison to other RPCA-based approaches on various experimental scenarios.

  • Intelligent maritime traffic information services provide services for maritime traffic safety, but due to the difference in ship specifications and loading condition, the method of determining abnormalities in ship stability has not been generalized. In this study, we established a method for collecting and preprocessing Accelerometer and GPS data for calculating ship stability. In addition, we have researched a model that can determine the real-time ship stability through data science algorithms that can reflect each vessel specifications and external forces, breaking away from approximate calculations that cannot reflect weather factors in the real ocean.

  • Brain injury causes persistent disability in survivors, and epidural hematoma(EDH) and subdural hematoma (SDH) resulting from cerebral hemorrhage can be considered one of the major clinical diseases. In this study, we attempted to automatically segment and hematomas due to cerebral hemorrhage in three dimensions based on computed tomography(CT) images. An improved GVF(gradient vector flow) algorithm was implemented for automatic segmentation of hematoma. After calculating and repeating the gradient vector from the image, automatic segmentation was performed and a 3D model was created using the segmentation coordinates. As a result of the experiment, accurate segmentation of the boundaries of the hematoma was successful. The results were found to be good even in border areas and thin hematoma areas, and the intensity, direction of spread, and area of the hematoma could be known in various directions through the 3D model. It is believed that the planar information and 3D model of the cerebral hemorrhage area developed in this study can be used as auxiliary diagnostic data for medical staff.
