  • In this study, the characteristics of flow within and around a crossroad connected symmetrically with four roads are numerically analyzed by using a two-dimensional well-balanced HLLC finite volume model. As results of simulations and analyses, the numerical model employed in this study describes relatively well the complex water surface in a crossroad according to the conditions of inflow and road slope. Moreover, the predicted temporal and spatial variations of water depths in a crossroad and outflows at two downstream boundaries agree relatively well with laboratory measurements.

  • A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested for the leading edge chamfer angle $(\gamma)$ of the supersonic turbine that is the one of the turbine design parameter. Firstly, the flow was visualized by a single pass Schlieren system. Next, total and static pressure of the cascade were measured by a pressure scanning system. Finally, highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions, flow characteristics of the supersonic turbine were observed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of indexes by human and machine, and differences between them in terms of term identification in a fulltext environment. A back-of-book index and two indexes produced by two term identifiers (LinkIt and Termer) as pseudo-indexing systems for a whole body of a monograph are examined. In the investigation, the traditional contrast between manual and automatic indexing is confirmed in fulltext environment, manual index is for browsing and human use, and automatic index is for searching and machine use. The border between them, however, becomes vague. Some considerations for the use of the term identifiers for browsing and for searching are discussed, and further research for the use of the term identifier is suggested.

  • Numerical study was made on the flow characteristics around a circular pipeline between parallel walls. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved by using a third-order upwind differential scheme. When the distance near a wall is small enough, the vortex shedding is almost completely suppressed because of the interaction with the wall boundary layer separation. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the vortex shedding regime as the body approaches a wall as Reynolds number varies. The feature of separated vorticity dynamics is analyzed at different conditions with particular attention to the interaction between the pipeline wake and the induced separation on the plane walls.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis procedure and a characteristics for dynamic of cylindrical panels. The panels with simply-simply or simply-clamped edge supports are subjectes to circumferential compressive or flexural stresses. The differential equations governing vibration and dynamic for these panels are derived by using the fundamental differential equation of the Love-Timoshenko and are solved numerically by the Galerkin method. The panel with simply-clamped edge supports is used a trigonometric function or an eigen function of a beam as a trial function and the effects of trial functions on numerical solutions are displayed. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effects of the flexural parameters in natural frequencies and coefficients of critical buckling, and some typical mode shapes of vibration and buckling are also presented.

  • The flow characteristics around KRISO 300K VLCC double-body model have been experimentally investigated in a closed-type subsonic wind tunnel. The local mean velocity and turbulence statistics including turbulent intensity. Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy were measured using a x-type hot-wire probe. The measurements were carried out at several transverse stations of the stern and near wake regions. The surface flow was visualized using on oil-film technique to see the flow pattern qualitatively. The flow in the stern and near wake region revealed complicated three-dimensional flow characteristics. The VLCC model shows a hook-shaped wake structure behind the propeller boss in the main longitudinal vortex region. The thin boundary layer at midship was increased gradually in thickness over the stern and evolved into a full three-dimensional turbulent wake.

  • Underwater channels can be regarded as time-varying systems in view of the acoustical characteristics due to the fact that the characteristics of the channel are affected by the environmental and geometrical conditions. Especially in shallow water case, the surface and bottom conduct as a waveguide so echo effect due tu the multipath reflections are severe. Therefore in shallow water communications, it is very important to equalize the transmitted signals distorted by the underwater channels with time-varying multipath fading. In this paper an equalizer system which employs the frequency domain adaptive filter to equalize the channels using inverse modeling technique is introduced.

  • The PSP(Pressure Sensitive Paint) is a technique to measure continuous pressure distribution on medel surface by oxygen quenching. The objective of this study is to apply PSP which is measured pressure for analyzing that air-fuel mixing characteristics in SCRamjet combustor. Experimentation is performed at freestream Mach number of 2.5 and used fuel jet injection. The result shows that growing air-fuel mixed proportions by increasing in cavity size. Also, PSP results compared with conventional pressure tap and CFD. They are coincided with qualitative and the inclination.

  • Beams curved in plan are often designed with the circular curved member system including warping effects. In this study, the curved bridges are idealized as the circular curved member system with singly symmetric cross sections and simply supported ends. Displacement fields of them to satisfy the boundary conditions are expanded by Fourier series and the governing equation of natural frequencies of them is derived. The distributions of the characteristics of natural frequencies of them are shown according to the variations of relevant parameters-angle of intersection, curvature, and parameter of symmetry of cross section which can represent the properties of the curved bridges. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of relevant parameters on natural frequencies.
