  • This paper describes a potential-based panel method formulated for the prediction of the steady performance of a waterjet propulsor. The method employs normal dipoles and sources distributed on the solid surfaces such as the impeller/stator blades, hub and duct, and normal dipoles in the shed wakes trailing the impeller and stator to represent the potential flow around the waterjet propulsor. To define a closed boundary surface, the inlet and outlet open boundary surfaces are introduced where the sources and dipoles are distributed. The kinematic boundary condition on the solid boundary surface is satisfied by requiring that the normal component of the total velocity should vanish. On the inlet surface, the total inflow flux into the duct is specified, and on the outlet surface the conservation of mass principle is applied to evaluate the source strength. The solid surfaces are discretized into a set of quadrilateral panel elements and the strengths of sources and dipoles are assumed constant at each panel. Applying this approximation to the boundary conditions leads to a set of simultaneous equations. Systematic numerical tests show that the present numerical method is fast and stable. In order to validate the present method, sample computations are carried out first for the case of a conventional axial flow fan which has a similar geometry as the waterjet propulsor, and then for the case of a waterjet propulsor on which experiments are carried out at KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering).

  • In this paper, the harbor tranquility problem is analysed by an improved boundary integral equation method. The effect of the diffracted wave transformation induced by the breakwater and structures located at a harbor mouth is considered. Partial reflection concept is also used to consider energy dissipation effects. The present model is verified by comparing the results of the model for rectangular and semi-circular harbors with the analytic solutions. they show a reasonable agreement. Also the wave height distribution of the HUPO harbor computed using the present model agree well to those from the previous hydraulic model tests. It also shows a good agreement with the results from the time-dependent mild slope equation model.

  • A coupled thermal/structural analysis of mechanical ablation is performed based on domain/boundary decomposition and finite element method. The ablative material non-linearity and boundary non-linearity can be easily localized within a few subdomains and/or on the boundary interfaces. An enthalpy method is applied to simplify the effect of heat of pyrolysis in the ablative subdomains. In addition, maximum in-plane shear stress is considered as a surface recession criterion for the mechanical ablation simulation. The basic characteristics of the proposed method are examined carefully through numerical experiments.

  • The run-up and the evolution of solitary waves on steep beaches are investigated by using a two-dimensional boundary integral equation model. The model is first used to compute the run-up heights of solitary waves on a relatively mind slope. The model is verified by comparing the computed numerical solutions with available experimental data, other numerical solutions and approximated analytical solutions. The agreement between the present numerical solutions and the other data is found to be excellent. The model is then applied to the calculation of run-up heights on very steep slopes. As far as the maximum run-up of solitary waves is concerned, the boundary integral equation model provides reasonable and reliable solutions. Finally, the evolution on steep beaches is also examined and the obtained wave heights are compared with those calculated from the Green's law.

  • Most of structural analyses are concerned with the deformation and stress in a body subjected to external loads. In many fields, however, the interpretation of inverse problems is needed to determine surface tractions or internal stresses from measured displacements. In this study, the inverse processes by using the boundary element method are formulated for the evaluation of boundary tractions from displacements measured on a remote surface. Small errors in measured displacements often result in a substantial loss of accuracy of an inverse system. Numerical results show that the error in reconstructed tractions by using the inverse boundary element methods is sensitive to measurement location and noise.

  • For the wave propagation problems, the influence of time-dependent dynamic behavior must be accounted in the analysis. In this study, the dynamic analysis method which combines finite elements and boundary elements is developed for the wave propagation problem modelling the infinity of medium through 3-D boundary elements and underground structure through degenerated finite shell elements. Performing dynamic analysis of underground tunnels by the proposed coupling method of boundary and finite elements, it is found that the change of the stiffness of structures has a good effect on the response. It is also found that the consideration of the repeating effect due to moving traffic loads which is difficult with existing 2-D dynamic analysis can be possible with the 3-D analysis in time domain.

  • It is a tedious and excessive time consuming process to model the local area of crack tip part of structures in calculation of stress intensity factors by FEM. So, in this paper, the hybrid method of FEM and BEM approach was formulated to overcome this type of problems. The multi-domained BEM was adopted to simplify the modelling process of complex geometry and singularity characteristics of crack tip part and the ordinary FEM modelling was used in the rest part. The example calculations shows very good results compared with analytic solutions and other numerical method.

  • The finite element and boundary element methods of underground analysis are both well established numerical techniques for determination of stress and displacement distributions at underground excavation. The finite element method presents antithetical advantages and limitations. Complex constitutive behaviour may be modelled, at the expense of numerical efficiency and, for infinite domain, inadequate representation of remote bounadry conditions. The inherent advantages of the boundary element method are the ease with which infinite domain problems may be analysed, and the efficiency of analysis typically associated with a boundary value solution procedure. Application of the method is limited by the requirements linear constitutive behaviour for the medium. A combined of the finite element and boundary element methods of underground analysis is shown to preserve the advantages of each procedure, and, eliminates their individual disadvantages. Procedures employed in this papers described combined FEBEM algorithm. Solutions of underground excavation verifying the performance of combined FEBEM code are compared with theoretical solution, boundary element solution and finite element solution.

  • Among 28 land Categories, 'road' is that most frequently established or transformed. Like that of other 27 land categories, the boundary of road should be defined by boundary making principles and then fixed by cadastral laws. But, some criteria to determine the land boundary, especially in boundary making rule which can be used by geographical features, is confused partly in Land Use Planning stages. Because the purpose of making any rules in fixing road boundary may be misinterpreted, the gap between law and real land boundary can be occurred. Those related rules in determining the land boundary must be improved urgently. Cut surface' or 'slope' should be conformed as a legal term and I suggest that 'Structures' must be changed to 'geographical features'.
