  • Fatigue crack was detected from a temperature change around surface crack using the thermographic technique. Thermal gradient across the crack decreased very much due to thermal resistance of contact surface in the crack. Heat diffusion flow passing through the discontinuity was visualized in temperature by infrared camera to find and locate the crack. A fatigue crack specimen(SM-45C), which was prepared according to KS specification and notched in its center to initiate fatigue crack from the notch tip, was heated by halogen lamp at the end of one side to generate a heat diffusion flow in lateral direction. A abrupt jump in temperature across the fatigue crack was observed in thermographic image, by which the crack could be located and sized from temperature distribution.

  • The effect of an increase in the temperature of inlet air on the performance of a membrane humidifier for a PEMFC (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell) vehicle was investigated both experimentally and numerically. A shell-and-tube type gas-to-gas humidifier with Nafion membrane was tested. The experimental result showed that water transfer varies nonlinearly with the temperature elevation. Numerical analysis based on detailed modeling was also conducted in simplified geometry of a single tube to explain this nonlinear behavior. The simulation revealed that the local water flux varies nonlinearly and dramatically along the tube. The analysis was based on the inverse relationship between the increase in temperature and decrease in relative humidity, both of which seriously affect the water conductivity of the membrane.

  • The surface temperature and hydrological budget for the last glacial maximum (LGM) is simulatedwith an atmospheric general circulation model of NCAR CCM3 at spectral truncation of T170, corespondingto a grid cel size of roughly 75 km. LGM simulations were forced with the reconstructed CLIMAP sea surface temperatures, sea ice distribution, ice sheet topography, reduced CO2, and orbital parameters.oC in winter, 5.6oC in sumer, and 6oC annual-mean. The decrease of surface temperature leads to a weakening of the hydrologicalcycle. Global-mean precipitation decreases by about 14% in winter, 17% in summer, and 13% annually. However, some regions such as the U.S., southern Europe, northern and eastern Africa, and the SouthAmerica appear to be weter in the LGM winter and Canada and the Midle East are weter in sumer. model captures detailed climate features over land.

  • This paper describes the thermal analysis which can calculate the ablation depth and temperature distribution of the rocket nozzle liner allowing geometry change caused by the ablation of nozzle liner. In this analysis, Zvyagin's model is used for surface ablation and Yaroslavtseva's model for in-depth pyrolysis. A deforming finite-element grid is used to account for external-boundary movement due to the erosion of thermal liner. The accuracy of the present numerical method is evaluated with a rocket nozzle liner and the numerical solutions are favorably agreed with experimental data. The temporal variations of temperature and ablation depth at the thermal liner of another rocket nozzle are numerically simulated and the results are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the effects of kinetic constants for carbon-carbon and carbon-phenolic composites on the ablation depth of thermal liner.

  • Acetone LIF and Rayleigh scattering measurements were performed to identify the entrainment of ambient air in the buoyant jet qualitatively. The air entrainment near nozzle exit was enhanced with increasing both an axial distance and Reynolds number. The results supported that the air entrainment had to be considered in isothermal model for the development of its accuracy. Also, this paper provided an isothermal model based on the ideal plume, of which radiative heat loss fraction was assumed to 0.35 and the entainment of isothermal jet was considered. This simple model could be used in compartment or semi-enclosure fires such as tunnel, and it is more reliable because of introducing entrainment effect in isothermal jet.

  • Latent heat storage system using micro-encapsuled phase change material is effective method for floor heating of house and building. The temperature profile in capsule block and flow rate of hot water are important parameters for the development of heat storage system. In the present study, a mathematical model based on 3-D, non-steady state, Navier-Stokes equations, scalar conservation equations and turbulence model ($\kappa$-$\varepsilon$), is used to predict the temperature profiles in capsule and the velocity vectors in hot water pipe. The multi-block grids and fine grids embedding are used to join the circle in hot water pipe and square in capsule block. The phase change process of the capsule is quite complex not only because the size of phase change material is very small, but also because phase change material is mixed with the cement to form thermal storage block. In calculation, it's assumed that the phenomena of phase change is limited only the thermal properties of phase change material and the change of boundary is not happened in capsule. The purpose of this study is to calculate the temperature profiles in capsule block and velocity vectors in hot water pipe using the numerical calculation. Two kinds of thermal boundary condition were considered, the first (case 1) is the adiabatic condition for the both outside surfaces of the wall, the second (case 2) is the case in which one surface is natural convection with atmosphere and another surface is adaibatic. Calculation results are shown that the temperature profile in capsule block for case 1 is higher than that for case 2 due to less heat loss in adaibatic surface. Specially, in the domain of near Y=0, the difference of temperature is greater in case 1 than in case 2. The detailed experimental data of capsule block on the temperature profile and the thermal properties such as specific heat and coefficient of heat transfer with the various temperature are required to predict more exact phenomena of heat transfer.

  • Friction Stir Welding is a welding technique for metal materials that utilizes the heat generated by friction between the material to be welded and the welding tool that rotates at high speed. In this study, a numerical analysis method was used to analyze the change in the internal temperature of the welded material during friction stir welding. As the welding target material, AZ31 magnesium alloy was applied and the welding phenomenon was considered a flow characteristic, in which a melting-pool was formed. FLUENT was used as the numerical tool to perform the flow analysis. For flow analysis of the welding process, the welding material was assumed to be a high viscosity Newtonian fluid, and the boundary condition of the welding tool and the material was considered to be the condition that friction and slippage occur simultaneously. Analyses were carried out for various rotational speeds and the translational moving speed of the welding tool as variables. The analysis results showed that the higher the rotational speed of the welding tool and the slower the welding tool movement speed, the higher the maximum temperature in the material increases. Moreover, the difference in the rotational speed of the welding tool has a greater effect on the temperature change.

  • $\textrm{WO}_3$ semiconductive film, which is known to have a sensitivity on $\textrm{NO}_X$ gas was prepared on 8YSZ (8% Yttria stabilized $\textrm{ZrO}_2$) ionic conductor substrate that has oxygen ion pumping effect. Microstructure and electrical properity, especially $\textrm{NO}_X$ sensitivity as a function of DC voltage applied to 8YSZ substrate was examined. When the $\textrm{WO}_3$ film was annealed, it showed amorphous structure, while crystallization was occurred at $600^{\circ}$C revealing orthorhombic phase of $\textrm{WO}_3$. As the annealing temperature increases, (111) and (001) peaks of $\textrm{WO}_3$ film was enhanced. At $400^{\circ}C$ when DC voltage was applied, comparing with no DC bias, more stable and large response characteristics was showed, and the best sensitivity was observed at 2V. Recovery characteristics of NO gas was much better that that of $\textrm{NO}_2$ gas.
