  • In this paper, a support plan for marriage immigrants through e-learning was studied. Currently, the number of Korean men marrying foreign women is rapidly increasing due to the increase in the imbalance of gender ratios caused by preference for boys and shunning of rural areas by Korean women. To alleviate this problem, the government is performing various social adaptation programs such as Korean language education and vocational education. Most marriage immigrants, however, are not properly educated as they are burdened by their household duties or work. In this paper, a plan for supporting marriage immigrants through e-learning was researched. To achieve this goal, a survey on intentions of the marriage immigrants to receive muticultural education through e-learning was performed. The result showed that most of marriage immigrants have a strong preference for e-learning. However, there are differences on their preference depending on the original nationality and residential region. A support plan for multicultural education through e-learning was proposed according to the above result. The support plan consists of three parts. First, education for marriage immigrants will be specialized according to their respective original nationality. Second, Korean education will be given greater emphasis in education. Third, vocation education which will benefit marriage immigrants will be prepared. Above support plans are expected to help the marriage immigrants to settle as equal members of the society instead of deteriorating into an underprivileged class by providing them with an opportunity to receive education.

  • To explore the device to allow the marriage immigrants' family to take jobs in our country, the social and economic environments that they face are investigated and analyzed through literature survey and field inquiry. The principal motive of the marriage to Korean is economic problem. But their actual economic conditions are inferior, and other legal problems, such as getting jobs and remitting money to their home country, drive them to unstable status. The present hiring policy is applied only to foreign workers with no domestic relations(E-9), hence the marriage immigrants are excluded from the domestic employment. To make institutional devices for giving them the employment opportunity, the modification of the existing laws are proposed. For examples, the 'Act on employment of foreign workers' can be revised to permit immigrant's relatives to get jobs, and 'Immigration control law' can be amended to guarantee legal qualification for taking jobs. It is desirable that the overall control be made by the Prime Minister's Office, and operation as well as surveillance be performed by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MGEF) and the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MEL).

  • This study aims to examine the moderating effects of social support and subjective social status in the relationship between discrimination and self-rated health among foreign spouses. For the analysis, data from the 2015 National Survey of Multicultural Families was used and a total of 16,870 foreign spouses were selected using hierarchical regression analysis. The results of this study showed that discrimination was negatively related with self-rated health while social support and subjective social status were positively related with self-rated health of foreign spouses. Also, the moderating effect of subjective social status was identified, which means that it enhanced the positive effect of discrimination on self-rated health. This study provided empirical evidence for implementation of social integration policies. The authors suggested future qualitative research of discrimination and health, and social policies and services promoting equal opportunities for foreign spouses.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the health status of marriage immigrants and naturalized people, their health service utilization and barriers to that in an effort to seek ways of getting rid of their difficulties in health service utilization. The raw data of a 2012 Survey on the State of Multicultural Families were used, and a survey was conducted on 15,001 marriage immigrants and naturalized people from July 10 to July 31, 2012. As a result, the marriage immigrants and the naturalized people got a mean of 3.96 in subjective health status, which showed that they were in good health. The main medical institutions that they used in times of sickness were hospitals and clinics(82.7%). 39.1 percent of the respondents answered they had difficulties in using health service, and the most dominant difficulty they faced at that time was communication problems(52.0%), followed by high expense(28.9%). The respondents who answered they found it most difficult to use health service due to communication lagged behind the others in terms of Korean proficiency, and the respondents who cited expense as the biggest difficulty fell behind the others in terms of living standard. To make health service more accessible to marriage immigrants and naturalized people, the government should take measures to ensure their right of health. Specifically, how to relieve their financial burden should carefully be devised, and medical institutions should provide interpretation service to guarantee their easier health service utilization.

  • This study is focused on showing possibilities and limitations of the disabled men roles through the relationships with migrant women in korean novels, furthermore it is discovering the problems and the directions for successful cohabitation of the disabled men and migrant women in Korea. To accomplish this purpose of study, we analyzed and criticized 5 Korean novels which described the life of a disabled man with a migrant woman in Korean multicultural society. As a result, the disabled man in those relationships represented the man who was only true to his own desires or the man of the minority in social restraint due to disability and also those men can be classified as attackers or helpers for their migrant lovers. These formulaic expressions being problematic by themselves also facilitate making distorted images of the disabled men and migrant women.
