  • The present study aims to identify the ego, marriage and parenting-related psychological characteristics of mothers of infants with developmental risk, as well as to perform comparative analysis between their psychological characteristics and those of mothers of normal infants. For this purpose, we used SPSS 21 statistical software to calculate the average and standard deviation values, and also conducted frequency analysis and t-tests. The study subjects were mothers of 1584 normal infants and 186 infants with developmental risk, who were classified by Korean Denver II developmental screening test from a total of 1802 families listed in the 3rd year data from the Panel Study on Korean Children in 2010. Our results revealed a significant difference in the martial satisfaction and husbands' parenting participation between two groups, among the marriage-related psychological characteristics. There was also a significant difference in the parenting knowledge, style and stress among the parenting-related psychological characteristics. However, a statistically significant difference was not observed in the ego-related psychological characteristics of mothers. These results are thought to serve as baseline data for the infants with developmental risk at the precautionary level.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of retirement stress, character strengths and marital dissatisfaction on depression. Additionally this study examined direct effects and indirect effects of character strengths and marital dissatisfaction. The participant group was composed of 197 retired men living in Daegu and Gyongsangbuk-do. The Retirement Stress Scale (RSS), Character Strengths Test (CST), Korean Marital Satisfaction Inventory (K-MSI), and Center for Epistemology Studies Depression scale (CES-D) were administered to participants. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS was used for the purpose of analysis. The results of the study were as follows. First, an increase in retirement stress was associated with higher levels of depression. Second, hierarchical regression analysis indicated that higher levels of optimism significantly predicted higher depression. Also hierarchical regression analysis indicated that lower levels of appreciation of beauty and excellence without optimism significantly predicted higher depression. Furthermore, increases in marital dissatisfaction were associated with higher levels of depression. Third, the constructed model including both direct effects and indirect effects appeared to fit better than alternative model in explaining relationships between retirement stress and depression. In other words, character strengths and marital dissatisfaction appeared to affect the depression levels of retired men directly and indirectly. To sum up, this study demonstrated that the factors which had an effect on depression in retired men, character strengths and harmonious marital relationships appeared to act as a buffer against depression in retired men. The current results might serve as basic data for psychological well-being programs for retired men. Finally, the limitations and implications of the current study were discussed.

  • This study aimed to explore the causal relationship between an infant-mother's job satisfaction, psychological features, parenting stress and marital conflict through structural equation modeling. Specifically, we tried to identify influences of an infant-mother's job satisfaction on parenting stress and marital conflict and demonstrated how psychological features (self-efficacy, self-esteem, and depression) were mediated by these influences by using a sample of 444 Korean infant-mothers with jobs from the 3rd year of Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey with AMOS 20.0. First, the results demonstrated that job satisfaction of an infant-mother positively related to their self-efficacy and self-esteem whereas negatively related to depression among psychological features. Furthermore, job satisfaction of an infant-mother showed negative relationships with parenting stress and marital conflict. Second, an infant-mother's job satisfaction did predict marital conflict, but not parenting stress. However, these job satisfactions were mediated by an infant-mother's psychological factors. Findings were discussed with regard to the relationship between an infant-mother's job satisfaction, parenting stress, and martial conflict in the family counseling implications.

Socio-demographic characteristics include age, education, occupation, and monthly income. Immigration-related characteristics include years in the U. S., being U. S. citizens, and acculturation level. Psychological and social characteristics include anger, marital satisfaction, and social support. Using an availability sampling method, data were collected from 201 Korean American married men who were between the ages of 20 and 64 and resided in Los Angeles County. This study used a structured self-administered questionnaire. Due to the unreliable responses, five questionnaires were excluded from the study. Therefore 196 completed questionnaires were used for the data analyses. In order to measure the respondents' depression, the CES-D(Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression) was used in this study. In the hierarchical multiple regression analyses, monthly income, anger, marital satisfaction, and social support were significantly associated with the respondents' depression. However, there were no significant associations between depression and age, education, occupation, being a U. S. citizen, and acculturation. Implications of the findings for mental health practitioners and social works are discussed.
