  • Effects of B$_2$O$_3$and CuO addition on the microwave dielectric properties of the PbWO$_4$-TiO$_2$ceramics were investigated in order to use this material as an LTCC material for fabrication of a multilayered RF passive components module. We found that PbWO$_4$could be used as an LTCC material because of its low sintering temperature (8$50^{\circ}C$) and fairy good microwave dielectric properties($\varepsilon$$_{r}$=21.5, Q$\times$f$_{0}$=37200 GHz and $\tau$$_{f}$ =-31 ppm/$^{\circ}C$). In order to stabilize $\tau$$_{f}$ of PbWO$_4$, TiO$_2$was added to the PbWO$_4$and the mixture was sintered at 8$50^{\circ}C$. A near zero $\tau$$_{f}$ value (+0.2 ppm/$^{\circ}C$) was obtained with 8.7 mol% TiO$_2$addition. $\varepsilon$r and Q$\times$f$_{0}$ values were 22.3 and 21400 GHz, respectively. It was believed that the decrement of Q$\times$f$_{0}$ value with TiO$_2$addition was resulted from increasing grain boundary. In order to improve Q$\times$f$_{0}$, various amounts of B$_2$O$_3$and CuO were added to the 0.913PbWO$_4$-0.087TiO$_2$mixture. The optimum amount of CuO was 0.05 wt%. At this addition, the 0.913PbWO$_4$-0.087TiO$_2$ceramic showed $\varepsilon$$_{r}$=23.5, $\tau$$_{f}$ =-2.2ppm/$^{\circ}C$, and Q$\times$f$_{0}$=32900 GHz after sintered at 8$50^{\circ}C$. In case of B$_2$O$_3$addition, the optimum amount range was 1.0~2.5 wt% at which we could obtain following results; $\varepsilon$$_{r}$=20.3~22.1, Q$\times$f$_{0}$=48700~54700 GHz, and $\tau$$_{f}$ =+2.4~+8.2ppm/$^{\circ}C$.

  • Structural abnormalities of the Y chromosome affect normal testicular differentiation and spermatogenesis. The present case showed a rare monocentric derivative Y chromosome with partial duplication of Yp including the SRY gene and deletion of Yq12 heterochromatin. The karyotype was 46,X,der(Y)(pter${\rightarrow}$q11.23::p11.2${\rightarrow}$pter).ish der(Y)(DYZ3+,DYZ1-,SRY++), confirmed through a FISH study. Even though the patient possessed an abnormal Y chromosome, testicular biopsy showed normal testicular volumes in the proband, with gonadal hormonal levels in the normal range but bilateral varicocele and hypospermatogenesis. We speculate that the abnormal Y chromosome arose from sister chromatids during Y chromosome recombination or intra chromosomal NAHR (non-allelic homologous recombination) during meiosis in the patient's father or in the very early stages of embryogenesis. The derivative Y chromosome might interfere in the meiotic stage of spermatogenesis, leading to the developmental arrest of germ cells. The present case illustrates that the infertility phenotype can have various causes. Also, it emphasizes the importance of accurate and various genetic analyses and could aid in male infertility treatment.

  • The basic composition of Ni-Zn ferrite was $(Ni_{0.35}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.45})_{1.02}(Fe_2O_3)_{0.98}$ (group A) and $(Ni_{0.4}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.4})_{1.02}(Fe_2O_3)_{0.98}$(group B) with additional 0.1 mol% $CaCO_3$ and 0.03 mol% $V_2O_5$. For high permeability and acceleration of grain growth, $CaCO_3$ and $V_2O_5$ was added. The mixture of the law materials was calcinated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and then milled. The compacts of toroidal type were sintered at different temperature ($1,050^{\circ}C,\;1,070^{\circ}C,\;1,100^{\circ}C$) for 2 hours in air followed by an air cooling. Then, effects of various composition and sintering temperatures on the microstructure and physical properties such as density, resistivity, magnetic induction, coercive force, initial permeability, quality factor, and curie temperature of the Ni-Zn ferrite were investigated. The density of the Ni-Zn ferrite was $4.90{\sim}5.10g/cm^3$, resistivity revealed $10^8{\sim}10^{12}{\Omega}-cm$. The average grain size increased with the increase of sintering temperatures. The magnetic properties obtained from the aforementioned Ni-Zn ferrite specimens were 4,000 gauss for the maximum induction, 0.25 oersted for the coercive force, 2,997 for the initial permeability, 208 for the quality factor, and $202^{\circ}C$ for the curie temperature. The physical properties indicated that the specimens could be utilized as the core of microwave communication and high permeability deflection yoke of high permeability.

  • National Treasure no. 101, the stupa of State Preceptor Jigwang from the Beopcheonsa Temple Site in Wonju has been transferred from place to place and reassembled several times since it was built. In particular, overall dismantling and repair was carried out in 1957 to restore parts damaged by bombing during the Korean War. Documented information on the repair process and materials used at that time does not exist. However, various types of metal materials used for this stupa have been identified during conservation work. Besides clamps anchor bolts, 9mm-thick circular rebars were mainly used for joining the parts of this stupa, while circular rebars and wires of various thicknesses were used for joining the parts with mortar restoration materials. Although deformed bars are typically used for stone pagodas classified as architectural structures, smooth circular rebars were used in this case. In terms of restoration using mortar, material shapes were transformed, bound alternately, and twisted irregularly to improve bonding strength and coherence in order to insert restoration materials and to bolster structural weaknesses. In addition, metallographic analysis showed the material to be hypo-eutectoid steel with low carbon content. Many non-metallic inclusions in the shape of drops of different sizes were included, which do not affect the whole elemental composition due to the very small quantities involved. Qualitative and EPMA analysis of Mn and S, which were not identified by SEM-EDS area analysis, established an even distribution of MnS in crystal grains of the microstructure, regardless of the shape of the samples. It is presumed that secondary homogenization and softening might have been conducted after manufacturing to facilitate the working process. Furthermore, in consideration of properties indicating that the thinner the steel is, the less carbon content contained and the greater the elasticity and elongation, it is judged that restoration work was ordered.
