This paper describes a short-term prediction model for the movement of an oil slick in shallow waters. Under the assumption that the initial movement of the oil slick is governed by spreading and advection, the model has been developed and applied to Kyungki-Bay near Incheon Harbor. The initial spreading is estimated by using an empirical formula. The depth-averaged momentum equations are solved numerically for the volume transport velocities, in which the $M_2$ tide is the main driving source. A staggered grid system is adopted fur spatial discretization and the half-time method is implemented for time marching. The numerical result is visualized with the help of animation and thus the contaminated area is displayed on a monitor in time sequence. The input data are the time, the location and the volume of spill accident as well as environmental data such as md and $M_2$ tide.

The Annals of Joseon Dynasity record a significant damage of tsunami in the east coast of Gangwon Province on August 29, 1741. The tsunami occurred near Oshima-Oshima island off the southwestern coast of Hokkaido, Japan, and this study conducted simulations of a ray-tracing model to analyze the effects of the tsunami on the East coast of Korean Peninsula at that time. Model results were calculated using four different depth dataset (ETOPO2m, ETOPO1m, SKKU1m, and GEBCO15c), and results using the highest resolution GEBCO15c showed the best description of the damage recorded in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. Based on such, the travel time and paths of the tsunami that reached the main regions of Gangwon Province are presented in detail.

To analyze the motion of aircraft through computing the dynamics equations, true airspeed is essential for obtaining aerodynamic loads. Although the airspeed is measured by on-board instruments such as pitot tubes, measurement data are difficult to obtain for commercial flights because they include sensitive data about the airline operations. One of the commonly available trajectory data, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast data, provide aircraft's speed in the form of ground speed. The ground speed is a vector sum of the local wind velocity and the true airspeed. This paper present a method to estimate true airspeed by combining the trajectory, meteorological, and topology data available to the public. To integrate each data, we first matched the coordinate system and then unified the altitude reference to the mean sea level. We calculated the wind vector for all trajectory points by interpolating from the lower resolution grid of the meteorological data. Finally, we calculate the true airspeed from the ground speed and the wind vector. These processes were applied to several sample trajectories with corresponding meteorological data and the topology data, and the estimated true airspeeds are presented.

The objective of this study is to enhance the model's speed of estimating weather variables (e.g., minimum/maximum temperature, sunshine hour, PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regression on Independent Slopes Model) based precipitation), which are applied to the Agrometeorological Early Warning System (http://www.agmet.kr). The current process of weather estimation is operated on high-performance multi-core CPUs that have 8 physical cores and 16 logical threads. Nonetheless, the server is not even dedicated to the handling of a single county, indicating that very high overhead is involved in calculating the 10 counties of the Seomjin River Basin. In order to reduce such overhead, several cache and parallelization techniques were used to measure the performance and to check the applicability. Results are as follows: (1) for simple calculations such as Growing Degree Days accumulation, the time required for Input and Output (I/O) is significantly greater than that for calculation, suggesting the need of a technique which reduces disk I/O bottlenecks; (2) when there are many I/O, it is advantageous to distribute them on several servers. However, each server must have a cache for input data so that it does not compete for the same resource; and (3) GPU-based parallel processing method is most suitable for models such as PRISM with large computation loads.

Dispersion of suspended sediment, caused by coastal and marine development, is a key item in assessing marine environmental impact as it adversely affects marine life by increasing the level of turbidity and decreasing the amount of sunlight in seawater. However, its estimation has not been reliable because of the absence of a standard for the data measurement and divergent approaches to the impact assessment. In this study, we examined the estimation models from 58 Marine Environmental Impact Statements (MEISs, 2012-2014) to identify the gaps in the assessment and devise ways of improving the estimation. We developed four index items-grid system; unit load, particle size, and settling velocit-to evaluate their reliability in the estimation. The mean reliability score of each index was overall low-25 for grid system, 60 for unit load, 34 for particle size, and 17 for settling velocity. To ensure high reliability, it is important to develop a standard guideline that defines precise measurement of suspended sediment for unit load and settling velocity by particle size, followed by a grid system with compatible size for modelling. This can improve the estimation and thus underlie coherent impact assessment of suspended sediment dispersion on marine environment.

SST (Sea Surface Temperature) is based on the atmosphere-ocean interaction, one of the most important mechanisms for the Earth system. Because it is a crucial oceanic and meteorological factor for understanding climate change, gap-free grid data at a specific spatial and temporal resolution is beneficial in SST studies. This paper examined the production of daily SST grid maps from 137 stations in 2020 through the ordinary kriging with variogram optimization and their accuracy assessment. The variogram optimization was achieved by WLS (Weighted Least Squares) method, and the blind tests for the interpolation accuracy assessment were conducted by an objective and spatially unbiased sampling scheme. The four-round blind tests showed a pretty high accuracy: a root mean square error between 0.995 and 1.035℃ and a correlation coefficient between 0.981 and 0.982. In terms of season, the accuracy in summer was a bit lower, presumably because of the abrupt change in SST affected by the typhoon. The accuracy was better in the far seas than in the near seas. West Sea showed better accuracy than East or South Sea. It is because the semi-enclosed sea in the near seas can have different physical characteristics. The seasonal and regional factors should be considered for accuracy improvement in future work, and the improved SST can be a member of the SST ensemble around South Korea.

This paper is to test the applicability of ModKIMSTORM (Modified KIneMatic Wave STOrm Runoff Model) by applying it to Namgangdam watershed of $2,293km^2$. Model inputs (DEM, land use, soil related information) were prepared in 500 m spatial resolution. Using five typhoon events (Saomi in 2000, Rusa in 2002, Maemi in 2003, Megi in 2004 and Ewiniar in 2006) and two storm events (May of 2003 and July of 2004), the model was calibrated and verified by comparing the simulated streamflow with the observed one at the outlet of the watershed. The Pearson's coefficient of determination $R^2$, Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency E, the deviation of runoff volumes $D_v$, relative error of the peak runoff rate $EQ_p$, and absolute error of the time to peak runoff $ET_p$ showed the average value of 0.984, 0.981, 3.63%, 0.003, and 0.48 hr for 4 storms calibration and 0.937, 0.895, 8.08%, 0.138, and 0.73 hr for 3 storms verification respectively. Among the model parameters, the stream Manning's roughness coefficient was the most sensitive for peak runoff and the initial soil moisture content was highly sensitive for runoff volume fitting. We could look into the behavior of hyrologic components from the spatial results during the storm periods and get some clue for the watershed management by storms.

This study is to develop a grid-based daily runoff model considering seasonal vegetation canopy condition. The model simulates the temporal and spatial variation of runoff components (surface, interflow, and baseflow), evapotranspiration (ET) and soil moisture contents of each grid element. The model is composed of three main modules of runoff, ET, and soil moisture. The total runoff was simulated by using soil water storage capacity of the day, and was allocated by introducing recession curves of each runoff component. The ET was calculated by Penman-Monteith method considering MODIS leaf area index (LAI). The daily soil moisture was routed by soil water balance equation. The model was evaluated for 930 $km^2$ Yongdam watershed. The model uses 1 km spatial data on landuse, soil, boundary, MODIS LAI. The daily weather data was built using IDW method (2000-2008). Model calibration was carried out to compare with the observed streamflow at the watershed outlet. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.78~0.93. The watershed soil moisture was sensitive to precipitation and soil texture, consequently affected the streamflow, and the evapotranspiration responded to landuse type.
The wind can be stronger and steadier further from shore, but water depth is also deeper. Then bottom-mounted towers are not feasible, and floating turbines are more competitive. There are additional motions in an offshore floating wind turbine, which results in a more complex aerodynamics operating environment for the turbine rotor. Many aerodynamic analysis methods rely on blade element momentum theory to investigate aerodynamic load, which are not valid in vortex ring state that occurs in floating wind turbine operations. So, vortex lattice method, which is more physical, was used in this analysis. Floating platform's prescribed positions were calculated in the time domain by using floating system RAO and waves that are simulated using JONSWAP spectrum. The average value of in-plane aerodynamic force increase, but the value of out-of-plane force decrease. The maximum variation aerodynamic force abruptly increases in severe sea state. Especially, as the pitch motion of the barge platform is large, this motion should be avoided to decrease the aerodynamic load variation.
