Suite of log analysis techniques consisting of geophysical well log, geological core log, and physical core log have been made to understand the well log responses and to determine the lithology of a test borehole-PABH1 located in Pungam sedimentary basin, Sosok, Hongchon-gun, Kangwon Province. Geological core logging has been precisely made over the cores taken between 64 and 124 meters, and 11 groups of rock types were deduced. Using the core samples divided by 11 groups, geophysical property measurements consisting of resistivity, natural gamma and density were made. Each rock group in the area is shown to have its characteristic physical response from geophysical well log and geophysical core logs. The outstanding physical responses particularly shown from siltstone, coarse sandstone to conglomerate, and granitic gneiss in the area were effectively used as keybeds in correlating the geophysical well logs to the result of geological core logs.
We performed MCNP modeling for density log, and examined its reliability and validity comparing the correction curves from physical borehole model. Based on the constructed numerical model, numerical modelings of density sonde in three-inch borehole were carried out under the various conditions such as the existence and type of casing or fluid, and also the stand-off between the sonde and borehole wall. These results of numerical modeling quantitatively reflect effects of casing and fluid in borehole, and moreover, demonstrate constant patterns with interval change from borehole wall. From this study, numerical modeling using MCNP shows a good applicability for well logging, and therefore, can be efficiently used for the calibration of well logging data under the various borehole conditions.
Cares should be taken when performing the P and S wave velocity loggings in engineering and environmental fields. Some of them are the effect of casing, which is installed to prevent the borehole collapsing when the drilling is done on the loose ground such as soil and/or soft rock, and the discrepancy of the velocities of the same media according to the difference of the source wave frequency spectrum. The elastic moduli obtained from the P and S wave velocity logging have the dynamic characteristics. To overcome these difficulties, the following suggestions are recommended; (1) develop and apply a careful drilling technique that can keep the borehole wall without a casing, and (2) apply the logging methods with the suitable frequency bandwidth for the object of the velocity logging. It is important to make the aseismological engineers understand the difference between the dynamic elastic moduli and the static ones obtained from mechanical test, and to advise them to use the information properly.
This investigation used two different geophysical logging techniques to confirm the depth to which a sheet pile was driven. Depth was estimated through analysis of the movement speed and three-component movement directions of a P-wave transmitted through the ground. It was also estimated by pole-pole and pole-dipole methods using electrical data logging to measure apparent resistivity. The two methods' respective results were 9.0 m (±1.5 m) and 7.5 m. As field ground conditions will include mixtures of various materials, electrical data logging is judged to be suitable for assessing depth due to its low signal-to-noise ratio.
The first Japanese pilot-scale $CO_2$ sequestration project has been undertaken in an onshore saline aquifer, near Nagaoka in Niigata prefecture, and time-lapse well logs were carried out in observation wells to detect the arrival of injected $CO_2$ and to evaluate $CO_2$ saturation in the reservoir. $CO_2$ was injected into a thin permeable zone at the depth of 1110m at a rate of 20-40 tonnes per day. The total amount of injected $CO_2$ was 10400 tonnes, during the injection period from July 2003 to January 2005. The pilot-scale demonstration allowed an improved understanding of the $CO_2$ movement in a porous sandstone reservoir, by conducting time-lapse geophysical well logs at three observation wells. Comparison between neutron well logging before and after the insertion of fibreglass casing in observation well OB-2 showed good agreement within the target formation, and the higher concentration of shale volume in the reservoir results in a bigger difference between the two well logging results. $CO_2$ breakthrough was identified by induction, sonic, and neutron logs. By sonic logging, we confirmed P-wave velocity reduction that agreed fairly well with a laboratory measurement on drilled core samples from the Nagaoka site. We successfully matched the history changes of sonic P-wave velocity and estimated $CO_2$ saturation a(ter breakthrough in two observation wells out of three. The sonic-velocity history matching result suggested that the sweep efficiency was about 40%. Small effects of $CO_2$ saturation on resistivity resulted in small changes in induction logs when the reservoir was partially saturated. We also found that $CO_2$ saturation in the $CO_2$-bearing zone responded to suspension of $CO_2$ injection.

Development of structures such as slope and tunnel, waste disposal, oil and LPG storages, and underground power house and so on, is increasing with the year. The method for appropriate estimation of rock state such as fresh or damaged rocks is also requested with increasing structural development. On these purposes, seismic logging system, which is a simple and easy way for handling as well as small and light, has been developed. Seismic logging method is one of logging tests, which is able to evaluate the state of rock mass with various shapes and is possible to obtain the relatively accuracy data at situ state. In addition, seismic logging method is at to apply to estimate structural behavior, before and after support installed. According to the results obtained from this study, firstly, it is clear that the extent of damage in rock slope due to blasting is able to be evaluated with quantity using seismic logging method, moreover to decide the damage zone in rock slope reasonably. Secondly, it is expected that installing depth of support is able to be decided more effectively and economically, using the results of seismic logging data. Finally, seismic logging method is also able to be applied safety supervision of structures, before and after support installed.
To clarify the distribution of joints and fracture zones in the Cheongju granitic mass, we analyzed drill-core and geophysical well-logging data obtained at two boreholes located 30 m from each other. Lithological properties were investigated from the drill-core data and the samples were classified based on the rock mass rating (RMR) and on rock quality designation (RQD). Subsurface discontinuities within soft and hard rocks were examined by geophysical well-logging and cross-hole seismic tomography. The velocity structures constructed from seismic tomography are well correlated with the profile of bedrock depth, previously mapped from a seismic refraction survey. Dynamic elastic moduli, obtained from full waveform sonic and ${\gamma}-{\gamma}$ logging, were interrelated with P-wave velocities to investigate the dynamic properties of the rock mass. Compared with the correlation graph between elastic moduli and velocities for hard rock at borehole BH-1, the correlation points for BH-2 data showed a wide scatter. These scattered points reflect the greater abundance of joints and fractures near borehole BH-2. This interpretation is supported by observations by acoustic televiewer (ATV) and optical televiewer (OTV) image loggings.
An optical televiewer is a geophysical logging device that produces continuous high-resolution full-azimuth images of a borehole wall using a light-emitting-diode and a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor image sensor to provide valuable information on subsurface discontinuities. Recently, borehole imaging logging has been applied in many fields, including ground subsidence monitoring, rock mass integrity evaluation, stress-induced fracture detection, and glacial annual-layer measurements in polar regions. Widely used commercial borehole imaging logging systems typically have limitations depending on equipment specifications, meaning that it is necessary to clearly verify the scope of applications while maintaining appropriate quality control for various borehole conditions. However, it is difficult to directly check the accuracy, implementation, and reliability for outcomes, as images derived from an optical televiewer constitute in situ data. In this study, we designed and constructed a modular fractured borehole model having similar conditions to a borehole environment to report unprecedented results regarding reliable data acquisition and processing. We investigate sonde magnetometer accuracy, color realization, and fracture resolution, and suggest data processing methods to obtain accurate aperture measurements. The experiment involving the fractured borehole model should enhance not only measurement quality but also interpretations of high-resolution and reliable optical imaging logs.
Sonic wave dispersion characteristics are one of the most important targets of study, particularly in estimating shear wave velocity from borehole sonic logging. We have tested dispersion characteristics using monopole and dipole sources. Theoretical dispersion curves were computed for tool-absent and tool-included models having the same physical properties but different diameters (including ${\Phi}520mm$, ${\Phi}150mm$, and ${\Phi}76mm$). Comparisons were made between boreholes of different sizes and between tool-absent and tool-included models. Between the tool-included and the tool-absent boreholes, a close similarity in dispersion curve shape was revealed for the monopole source, and a significant difference was shown for the dipole source. However, for the cut-off frequency, particularly in the engineering boreholes (${\Phi}76mm$ and ${\Phi}50mm$), a significant difference was observed for signals from the monopole source, but approximately the same cut-off frequencies were found with the dipole source. This indicates the need of careful choice of source frequency in monopole-source sonic logging, particularly in an engineering borehole. The results of numerical experiments show that cut-off frequency is exponentially proportional to the inverse of borehole radius, irrespective of the mode type and the presence of a tool, and that the cut-off frequencies for each borehole environment could be expressed as an exponential function, rather than the inversely proportional relationship between the cut-off frequency and the borehole radius that was previously generally recognised. From the direct comparison of dispersion curves, the effects on the dispersion characteristics of borehole size and the presence of the tool can be revealed more clearly than in previous studies, which presented the dispersion curve and/or characteristics for each borehole environment separately.
Various geophysical well logs have been made along the four deep wells in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. The primary focus of geophysical well loggings was to improve understanding the subsurface geologic structure, to evaluate in situ physical properties, and to estimate aquifer production zones using fluid temperature and conductivity gradient logs. Especially natural gamma logs interpreted with core logs of borehole BH-1 were useful to discriminate the lithology and to determine the lithologic sequences and boundaries consisting of semi-consolidated Tertiary sediments and intrusive rocks such as basic dyke and Cretaceous sediments. Cross-plot of physical properties inferred from geophysical well logs were used to identify rock types such as Cretaceous sandstone and mudstone, Tertiary sediments, rhyolite, and basic dyke. The temperature log indicated $82.51^{\circ}C$ at the depth of 1,981.3 meters in borehole BH-4. However, considering the temperature of borehole BH-2 measured under stable condition, we expect the temperature at the depth in borehole BH-4, if it is measured in stable condition, to be about 5 or $6^{\circ}C$ higher. Several permeable fractures also have been identified from temperature and conductivity gradient logs, and cutting logs.
