  • In a situation where the amount of bulky waste needs to be quantified, a three-dimensional model of the wastes can be constructed using drones. This study constructed a drone-based 3D model with a range of flight parameters and a GCPs survey, analyzed the relationship between the accuracy and time required, and derived a suitable drone application technique to estimate the amount of waste in a short time. Images of waste were photographed using the drone and auto-matching was performed to produce a model using 3D coordinates. The accuracy of the 3D model was evaluated by RMSE calculations. An analysis of the time required and the characteristics of the top 15 models with high accuracy showed that the time required for Model 1, which had the highest accuracy with an RMSE of 0.08, was 954.87 min. The RMSE of the 10th 3D model, which required the shortest time (98.27 min), was 0.15, which is not significantly different from that of the model with the highest accuracy. The most efficient flight parameters were a high overlapping ratio at a flight altitude of 150 m (60-70% overlap and 30-40% sidelap) and the minimum number of GCPs required for image matching was 10.

  • With the amendment to the Building Act in November of 2005 that offered incentives in terms of floor area ratio and number of stories to apartment buildings adopting the Rahmen structure to facilitate remodeling, the construction industry is paying more attention to PC structures. As connections between PC columns and beams require complex design, it is very difficult to install and remove forms. Since forms made of plywood for such connections are fabricated and installed on site, a significant amount of labor is required, and constructability is low. Furthermore, after concrete casting, the forms are removed in a state in which they cannot be recycled, which leads to a significant amount of construction waste. For this reason, a solution to address such issues needs to be studied. However, many researchers have focused only on the structural performance of PC structures in Korea and elsewhere, ignoring the need for research on the forms used in building PC structure connections. Therefore, this research aims to develop a form that can improve the productivity of PC structure connection construction, and compare it with conventional forms to highlight its contribution to gains in productivity and economic viability.

  • Approximately 240,000 tons of waste shells are produced annually in the south and west coast of South Korea. Some of these waste shells (oyster, cockle) are recycled as seeding collector and fertilizer, but most are dumped illegally near the coast. One of the alternative solutions that can economically utilize a large amount of these waste shells is to apply them to the production of construction materials. In this research, the basic physical properties of waste shells such as oyster, cockle, clam, manila clam were investigated, and were used to prepare cement mortar with a 25% replacement ratio of sand. According to the results, the 28 day compressive strength of cement mortar with cockle and manila clam shells was similar to that of plain cement mortar. The compressive strength decreased by about 18% when clam was used. However, the cement mortar with oyster shell showed about a 35% reduction in 28-day compressive strength, and two times the absorption capacity of plain cement mortar. The reduction in compressive strength and the increase in absorption capacity were mostly associated with the porous nature of the oyster shell.

  • In order to use recycled aggregate as pavement base or subbase materials, the US and many other European countries have started research since the early 1980s. Korea also had a recycle idea as a plan for the vast amount of construction wastes due to the downtown renovation in the 1990s, but was not put into practical use. After the resources saving and recycle expedition law in 1994, wastes from construction sites that have more than a certain amount of construction budget were recycled as pavement base and subbase materials, but now, researches are being conducted to use them as paving materials. The use of construction wastes is meaningful in many ways. It helps the natural conservation and aggregate consumption, and also improves pavement performance. This research presents a development of cold-mixed reclaimed asphalt pavement materials using recycled aggregates.

  • Large amounts of waste shells have been produced each year from shellfish raising industries located in Korean costal areas. Due to the limited space for the waste shell disposal, the related environmental problem has been a serious issue. It is believed that using the waste shells as a source of aggregate for mortar, concrete or bricks can be a good solution. In this research, possibility of utilizing waste shells as an aggregate of mortar is investigated. Waste shells of manila clam, cockle, clam, sea mussel, and oyster were properly crushed, sieved, and sorted to meet the requirements of the grading of standard fine aggregate. After that, the waste shells were used as partial and total replacement of the fine aggregate, and their absorption and 28-day compressive strengths of mortar were measured. In general, replacement of waste shells increased the absorption and decreased the strength. However, one specimen with cockle increased compressive strength as replacement ratio increased. Mortar with cockle of 50% and 100% replacement showed higher compressive strength than that of control mortar. This increase of compressive strength was found to be affected by the strong interfacial bonding properties of the cockle and a cement matrix.

  • Lots of soil-pavement concrete placed showed a number of problems such as decreasing strength, and durability. In this research, to provide a solution of the problem reported the wasting materials of natural organic lime and magnesia lime were used as a hardener to achieve sufficient performance of soil-pavement concrete. Namely, as a stimulus of blast furnace slag, the natural organic lime and magnesia lime were tested within the mix proportion of 0 to 10 % for each lime to make a new hardener. As a result, in the case of mortar with 1 to 3 % of cement to fine aggregate, 30 % replaced blast furnace slag showed the more favorable results with 5 to 5 % of mix proportion for natural organic lime and magnesia lime.

  • This study considerated reject ash, wastes of coal-fired power plants, to use mineral admixtures for cement. The pozzolan activity selected the fineness of the efficient reject ash through comparison and it compared to the fly ash that are widely used for concrete mixed material. Cement composites was prepared replacing of slag cement by fineness reject ash and fly ash, and properties of cement composites was tested by paste(setting time, fluidity, instrumental analysis) and mortar(compressive strength). Instrumental analysis results showed hydration reaction of fineness reject ash was not different from fly ash, but had more dense micro structures. Results of physical properties showed fineness reject ash shorten setting time, increased compressive strength compared by fly ash. Therefore using fineness reject ash with $6,000cm^2$/g to concrete mineral admixtures or cement composites was might be possible and could contribute to improve properties of concrete.

  • As a solution of both environmental issue of reducing carbon dioxide emission and sustainable issue of exhausting natural resources, in concrete industry, many research on recycling various by-products or industrial wastes as the concrete materials has been conducted. The aim of this research is feasibility analysis of additional reaction with ordinary Portland cement and flue gas desulfurization gypsum based on the blast furnace slag and recycled fine aggregate based mortar to achieve the normal strength range. Consequently, in the case of mortar replaced 10% FGD and 30% OPC for BS, 80% of plain OPC mortar's compressive strength was achieved. Furthermore, when the water-to-binder ratio is decreased to keep the practically similar level of flow, it is expected to be achieve the equivalent compressive strength to plain OPC mortar.
