  • Focusing on the information sender, message, channel, and receiver, the existing information theory deals with the noise, information contents, and probability of choice, which involve in the process of information transmission. In the current digital environment, besides simply conveying information itself through media, the important issue is how to efficiently convey information. Therefore, we need to analyze the theory in different perspective, and to research the Information redundancy for the methodology of information design. The redundancy causes the receiver to have attraction to the information and to reduce its contents due to its supplement and repetition. So it can play a role of efficient communication method. The concept of redundancy is applied to the communication of art such as literature, architecture, painting, and design to accomplish efficient communication. In order to get persuasive information design for the receiver's perspective we need to make use of this concept. The redundancy can be applied with the technical aspect of multimedia and Interaction, which add supplemental expression, or sort of event for the receiver's experience and memory. In the process of constructing information it can be applied with the structure of gaming redundancy, entropy, the accumulating communication code using entertaining feature, and storytelling methodology. The noise and entropy could be used for the means of making redundancy, not the obstacle to information. The redundancy gives the receiver attraction on the information and makes them have strong will of interpreting it so that the purpose of conveying information will be accomplished efficiently.

  • Not only in building design but also in HVAC system design, it is important to ensure an objectivity in schematic design. In the study, the author suggested a method to make a logical decision for quality design factors a(footing the selection of HVAC type in initial design process, and to provide objective design values. Fuzzy theory, one of the theories describing in quantitative way the ambiguous-natured linguistic values, was used to determine the qualitative design factors of linguistic parameter nature. It was found that it has a potential as a method to determine a HVAC type satisfying the required values of qualitative design factors involved in selection of the system type. But this needs further studies to be settled in the selecting of HVAC type.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial characteristics of the unit of garden and to classify and symbolize it, to provide the basis for analyzing the works based on the characteristics of the space and to provide the data that can become the logical foundation for garden design. The research method first analyzed the behavioral scene analysis and the grounded theory methodology as the theory about the space type. It controls the subjectivity of the researcher and derives the characteristics of the space for the garden image based on the experiential knowledge of the expert, It is a qualitative analysis method that aims to increase credibility. The actual case target was the author garden which was exhibited at the 2017 Seoul Garden Expo. Through this process, we have simplified the characteristics of the space and the positives and negatives accordingly. We have grasped the relationship between spatial space, sculptural space, architectural space, and environmental space.. Research on qualitative topics such as the characteristics of space can not completely exclude the subjectivity of the researcher in terms of its characteristics, but such research can provide a rationale for interpreting and evaluating the gardens that depend on the individual's taste.. It can also contribute to the development of the field by providing reference materials for garden designs that rely on designer intuition, or by providing a logical basis for design.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose guidance for wall renewal that is appropriate for an ancient city wall through application of advanced research and theories in wall design. It is a streetscape improvement project which forms part of the "Ancient City Image Finding Project". Study methods consist of advanced research classification, wall design theory contemplation, and analysis of the significance of designated ancient city areas and the "Ancient City Image Finding Project" status. Based on these methods, case study candidates were selected, case status and problems were identified, and improvement proposals were analyzed by comparing various features. Advanced wall research was classified into six categories including analysis of wall characteristics; wall design principle applications; wall structure, color, shape, and application; modern reinterpretation; palace walls; and house, temple, and village walls. The wall is an element of the streetscape improvement component of the "Ancient City Image Finding Project", with the characteristic of providing preceding experience in visual and cognitive awareness than interior structure. Case candidates for ancient city wall improvement are based on the composition distribution of the special conservation district in each ancient city as well as the conservation promotion district. Ultimately, the surrounding village of Gongju-si Geumseong-Dong Songsanri-gil, adjacent to the Royal Tomb of King Muryeong, was selected as the candidate. The "Ancient City Image Finding Project" of the surrounding village of Gongju-si Geumseong-Dong Songsanri-gil began with new Hanok construction. However, wall maintenance did not begin concurrently with that new Hanok construction. Support and maintenance took place afterwards as an exterior maintenance project for roadside structures. If the Hanok and wall were evaluated and constructed at the same time, the wall would have been built in unison with the size and design of the Hanok. The layout of the main building and wall of the Hanok is deemed to be a structure that is closed tightly because of its spatial proximity and tall height. Songsan-ri-gil's wall design should create a calm, subtle, and peaceful atmosphere with shapes, colors, and materials that express ancient city characteristics, but it is in an awkward position due to its sharpness and narrowness. The cause of the problem at Gongju-si Geumseong-dong Songsanri-gil, the case candidate, is that it is lacking significantly in terms of the aesthetic factors that traditional walls should possess. First, aesthetic consciousness seems to have disappeared during the selection and application process of the wall's natural materials. Second, the level of completion in design and harmony is absent. Maintenance guidance after analyzing the cause of problems in ancient city wall maintenance at Gongju-si Geumseong-dong Songsanri-gil, the subject area of research, is as follows: First, the Hanok design and layout of the wall and main gate should be reviewed simultaneously. Second, the one-sided use of natural stone wall in the Hanok wall design should be reexamined. Third, a permanent system to coordinate the opinions of citizens and experts during the planning and design phases should be employed. Fourth and finally, the Hanok's individuality shall be collectivized and its value as a cultural asset representing the identity of the community shall be increased.

  • University campus plans include urban and spatial values and identities that they emphasize. The purpose of this study is to analyze sustainable campus policy, space, and the application to architectural planning, which UBC in Canada pursues independently from a Green Campus Certificate System. Sustainable directions and architectural components are deduced. The results are as follows: 1) the correspondence between the campus plan's goal and architectural implementation is the most important. Thus, the university must build a system for the plan's goal and a strategy to make a sustainable campus. 2) A guideline and system are requested to make many experts in various fields and stakeholders participate in the initial stage through "Design Charrette." 3) A system of virtuous circulation must be built so that feedback can be applied through the real-time comparison and verification of building energy consumption. Another goal of this study is emphasizing the necessity of campus policy and plans based on the "Living Laboratory" concept to make a sustainable city. This study could be meaningful because it supports a basis for triggering the establishment of goals for a sustainable plan and implementation in Korean universities.

  • The number of architects who adopt BIM(Building Information Modeling) as the design method are gradually increasing because of its productivity and efficiency. Climate Change and Global Warming lead to legislation of new energy regulations and strengthen existing ones. The current architectural design methods (2D CAD) take a lot of time and effort to verify energy codes and are hard to adjust according to the design changes. The purpose of this study is to show the effectiveness of the BIM in building envelop energy modeling of the housing project. In the process of design method change, We could contribute to increasing productivity and efficiency in building energy verification through BIM because the updated value could be calculated simultaneously without information omission or recalculation process. The procedure for the study is as follows. Using BIM of the Goldin at Essex Crosing Housing Project by Revit 2011 as a case model, this study analyze the criteria for energy plan to conform to the energy code in NYC. The result value from the setting of the Revit model is compared with the reference value required by the NYC Energy Code. Finally, the data from BIM are entered into COMckeck, the energy verification program provided by U.S. Department of Energy, to check whether the building envelope energy performance conforms to NYC Energy Code.

  • The police substation includes work spaces for civil services, interviews, and meetings, etc, and private spaces for rest, showers and cafeterias and so on. Since a large number of rooms for each function should be installed in a relatively small building, it is important to develop an area standard for efficient space organization in consideration of the functional characteristics and usage patterns of each space. The purpose of this study is to suggest the way for improving the area standards for spaces in police substation based on the results of existing standards analysis and case study. For this objective, architectural documents of 161 police substations built after 2013 in Korea were comparatively analyzed. Sixteen of these facilities were selected for field survey and investigated how the workspace and private area were organized and used. The results of investigation showed that there were a number of problematic cases, such as spaces not installed or insufficient, spaces used for two or more functions, spaces installed even though they are not included in the standards. It was mainly due to the fact that several important spaces which had been installed in most police substations were not included in the existing standards. The ways for improvement were suggested like following four points: (1) Modifying the criteria for classifying facility size, (2) Modifying the lists of the required spaces, (3) Specifying the basis of calculation for each space in detail, and (4) Differentiating the way to organize spaces according to the facility size.
