A Study on the Improvement of Naval Surveillance Radar to Solve the Target Display Problem (함정용 탐색레이더의 표적 전시상태 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The surveillance radar for naval ships is an essential equipment of a battle system that executes the detection and tracking of targets, and the shooting support function; it calculates the three-dimensional track of the target range, azimuth, and altitude to carry out its duty. The surveillance radar consists of an antenna, a transceiver, a processing unit, and an air dryer section. The radar radiates the transmission signal on the antenna section, receives the reflected signal from the target, and amplifies the signals on the transceiver section. The signal received from the antenna is used to provide the operator with target information in various ways. This study identified the display problems when the information about the target is displayed through the radar. The causes of the problems were analyzed and improved. The tracking disappearance phenomenon caused by the altered-course of the ship was improved on the TWS tracking algorithm. The validity of the improved TWS tracking algorithm was confirmed by the normal condition of the target status on the B-scope.

Optimal Culture Conditions for Penicillium rubefaciens NNIBRFG5039 Possessing Antimicrobial Activity (항균활성 보유 Penicillium rubefaciens NNIBRFG5039의 최적배양 조건)

  • In screening for antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) KCCM 40510 and Bacillus cereus KCTC 3624, NNIBRFG5039 was isolated from the air in Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Based on a high sequence similarity of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, NNIBRFG5039 was determined to be closely related to Penicillium rubefaciens CBS 139145. The optimal media, initial pH, and temperature for mycelial growth and antimicrobial activity of P. rubefaciens NNIBRFG5039 were determined as follows: potato dextrose broth (PDB), pH 6.5, and 30℃, respectively. Under the optimal culture conditions, maximum mycelial growth (12.4 g L-1) and antibacterial activity (7.5 mm zone of inhibition against MRSA KCCM 40510, and 5.0 mm zone of inhibition against B. cereus KCTC 3624) were observed in a 5 L stirred-tank fermenter. We also isolated the antimicrobial compound from an ethyl acetate fraction, and its chemical structure was identified as (S)-6-hydroxymellein (1) by ESI-MS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. Consequently, the extract from P. rubefaciens NNIBRFG5039 may be used in functional materials for antimicrobial-related applications.

Tensile Strength of Composite Laminate Repaired Using Heat-blanket and a Novel Pressurization System (히트블랑켓과 새롭게 개발된 가압장치를 이용해 수리한 복합재 적층판의 인장강도 연구)

  • In the case of a conventional composite patch repair using a heat blanket, the adhesive is pressurized using only a vacuum bag. In this study, however, a pressurization system has been developed to apply additional air pressure on the vacuum bag. In order to verify the performance of the developed system, the composite laminates were repaired with scarf patches and then tested under tensile load to be compared with the strength of the defect-free laminate. Tensile tests were also conducted on specimens with the same configuration but bonded in an autoclave. As a result of the test, the tensile strengths of the specimens repaired using the heat blanket with vacuum only without external pressure, the specimens repaired with additional pressure by the developed system, and the specimens repaired with the same external pressure in an autoclave, showed the strength recovery ratios of 74.9, 81.0, and 78.2%, respectively. The results of the tensile test after moisture saturation and the dried fatigue test also showed that the strength recovery ratios of the specimens repaired under the external pressure of 1 atm using the developed system are slightly higher than that of specimens bonded in autoclave.

Viability of eggs, filariform larvae and adults of Stronglyloides venezuelensis (Nematoda: Strongyloidea) maintained in vitro (베네수엘라분선충 (Strongvloides venezuelensis)의 충란, 감염자충 및 성충의 실험관 내 배양)

  • The present study was performed to check the viability of eggs, filariform larvae and adults of Strongvloines venezueLensis exposed to various conditions for an in vitro maintenance. The eggs in the feces remained viable for about 25 days at $4^{\circ}C$ and 15 days at room temperature. However, the isolated eggs in sterile saline lost their viability within 24 hr at $4^{\circ}C$. The eggs in morula stage were very sensitive to air drying and rapidly lost their viability (=12 hrs. Filariform larvae survived for a maximum period of 45 days in fecal suspension and 28 days in 0.12% nutrient broth in polyvinyl culture bags maintained at $20^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, those isolated from nutrient broth cultures survived for a maximum period of 32 days in tap water and 22 days in sterile saline at $20^{\circ}C$. The mature adult worms obtained from experimentally infected rats survived maximally for 9 days in serum supplemented (10% rat-serum) 0.12% nutrient broth and 4 days in serum free nutrient broth at $37^{\circ}C$ while the culture media were changed at an alternate day. The adult female worms deposited fertile eggs in serum supplemented and serum free nutrient broth cultures, however, the hatched larvae (Ll) were not able to develop to the filariform stage in the culture media and found to die within 24 hr of maintenance. The present findings on an in vitro maintenance of different stages of 5. uenezueLetis may provide useful information for biological and biochemical studies with Strongyloines species. Measurement of Friction Angle of Sand from Horizontal Stress and Torque Acting on Vane (베인에 작용하는 수평응력과 토크를 이용한 모래의 마찰각 측정)

  • In this study, the torque and horizontal stress acting on vane were measured and then used to determine a friction angle of sand. A dry Nakdong River sand was prepared for loose and dense conditions in a cell and then pressurized with 25, 50, 75 or 100 kPa from the surface of sand. A vane (5cm in diameter and 10cm in height) was rotated and the torque and horizontal stress were measured at real time. A maximum torque was 3.5-9.5Nm for loose sand and 7.4-17.6Nm for dense sand, respectively. The maximum torque increased as an overburden pressure increased. The maximum torque obtained at 14-20 degrees of vane rotation, which was not influenced by the initial alignment of earth pressure and vane blade. An initial horizontal stress ratio was 0.33-0.35 on the average. The horizontal stress increased initially and then decreased due to particle disturbance. A friction angle was calculated from real time varying horizontal stress and torque, which decreased with increasing overburden pressure. The friction angle of loose sand from vane shear test was similar to that of direct shear test but that of dense sand was overestimated.

Improved Epifluorescence Microscopy for Observation of Phyllosphere Bacteria on Leaf Surfaces (잎권세균에 대한 개선된 형광현미경 관찰법)

  • Epifluorescence microscopy was used to observe epiphytic bacteria directly on plant leaf surfaces as well as indirectly in the leaf liberating solution by staining with fluorochromes of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and acridine orange(AO). Epiphytic bacteria could not be well observed on the leaf surface by staining with AO due to an intrusive orange or red background fluorescence. However, DAPI gave us clear epifluorescent images of the bacteria on the leaf. On the contrary, epiphytic bacteria in the liberating leaf solution were well observed on filters stained by both types of fluorochrome, although DAPI showed better fluorescent images than AO and not necessarily required a washing step of the filters stained. The optimum conditions of the DAPI stains were 5 $\mu$g/ml for 5 min both for leaves and for filters of the liberating solution. It was confirmed that a critical step in the epifluorescence microscopy of leaf surfaces was to minimize release of water from the leaf. For this, the stained leaf samples were put on a filter paper, kept in a dry oven at $70^{\circ}C$ for 2 min instead of air-drying, and then immediately observed by epifluorescence microscopy. The established technique was applied to enumerate epiphytic bacteria on oak tree leaf surfaces.

  • Tungsten oxide supported on zirconia was prepared by drying powdered $Zr(OH)_4$ with ammonium metatungstate aqueous solution, followed by calcining in air at high temperature. Upon the addition of only small amount of tungsten oxide (1 wt % $WO_3$) to $ZrO_2$, both the acidity and acid strength of catalyst increased remarkably, showing the presence of $Br{\ddot{o}}nsted$ and Lewis acid sites on the surface of $WO_3$/$ZrO_2$. The high acid strength and large amount of acid sites on $WO_3$/$ZrO_2$ were due to the presence of the W=O bond nature of complex formed by the interaction between $WO_3$ and $ZrO_2$. The catalyst containing 20 wt % $WO_3$, calcined at 973 K, showed the highest catalytic activity for the 2-propanol dehydration, while the catalyst containing 15 wt % $WO_3$, calcined at 1023 K, exhibited the highest catalytic activity for the cumene dealkylation. For the 2-propanol dehydration the catalytic activities of $WO_3$/$ZrO_2$ catalysts were roughly correlated with their acidities.

TFWT and OBT Concentrations in Soybean Plants Exposed to HTO Vapor at Different Growth Stages (콩의 생육단계별 HTO 증기 피폭에 따른 작물체내 TFWT 및 OBT 농도)

  • Soybean plants were exposed to HTO vapor in an exposure box for 1 hour at different growth stages. Relative concentrations of TFWT at the end of exposure (percent ratios of TFWT concentrations to mean HTO concentrations in air moisture in the box during exposure) decreased on the whole in the order of leaf > shell > seed > stem with the highest values of 40.2% and 6.4% for leaf and stem, respectively. TFWT concentrations reduced by factors of several thousands to several hundred-thousands from the end of exposure till the harvest. The reduction factor decreased in the order of leaf > shell > seed > stem. Relative OBT concentrations at harvest (ratios of the OBT concentration in the dry plant part at harvest to the initial leaf TFWT concentration, ml $g^{-1}$) were in the range of $2.2{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}9.5{\times}10^{-3}$ for seeds being the highest when the exposure was performed at the actively seed-developing stage. The exposure time-dependent variation in the OBT concentration was much greater in seeds and shells than in leaves and stems. It was indicated that OBT would contribute to almost all the radiation dose due to the consumption of soybean seeds in most cases after an acute exposure of growing plants to HTO vapor. Present results are applicable to establishing and validating soybean $^3H$ models for an acute accidental release of HTO.

The Optimum of $CO_2$ Decomposition using Spinel Phase $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$ (스피넬상 $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$를 이용한 $CO_2$ 분해의 최적조건)

  • The spinel $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$ catalysts for $CO_2$ decomposition were synthesized by a sol-gel method using manganese acetate and lithium hydroxide as starting materials through drying at $150^{\circ}C$ for 12 hrs under oxygen atmosphere followed by heat treatment at $480^{\circ}C$ for 12 hrs. The synthesized $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$ were reduced by hydrogen for 3 hrs at various temperatures and the decomposition rate of carbon dioxide was investigated at 300, 325, 350, 375 and $400^{\circ}C$ using the $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$ reduced by hydrogen gases. As a result of experiment, the optimum temperature of hydrogen reduction and $CO_2$ decomposition was shown $350^{\circ}C$. The physicochemical properties of the spinel $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$ the reduced $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$ and the $Li{Mn_2}{O_4}$ after $CO_2$ decomposition were examined with XRD, SEM and TGA.

Anti-wrinkle Effect of Morinda citrifolia (Noni) Extracts (노니 추출물의 주름개선 효과연구)

  • Wrinkle formation is mainly attributed to the environmental factors such as UV rays, air pollution, smoking and stress etc. Especially, UV rays induce premature skin aging which is characterized by deep wrinkle, leathery dryness etc. Recently, researches on the wrinkle formation and its prevention have been the main theme in cosmetics fields. We have studied the various plant extracts having anti-wrinkle effects and finally showed that Noni (Morinda citrifolia) extracts have the efficacy of promoting the type I collagen synthesis in normal human fibroblast, using PICP assay. We purified one active compound from Noni extracts and identified its structure. It was identified as 6,7-Dimethoxy-2H-1-Benzopyran-2-one; scopoletin by $^1H-NMR,\;^{13}C-NMR,$ IR, Mass analysis. Scopoletin increased collagen synthesis in a dose dependent manner (89.5% at $0.2{\mu}g/mL$). In order to verify the anti-aging effectiveness of the cream containing 3% noni extracsts, we performed the in vivo test with some female volunteers for 12 weeks. It reduced the signs of aging, especially face wrinkles. From these results, we conclude that the noni extracts could be used as an useful anti-wrinkle agent.
