This study was carried out to investigate seedling quality, growth characteristics and yield of hot pepper (Capsicum annum) grown in the open field according to seedling growth periods (SGPs) of 45, 55, 65, 75, and 85 days. Before planting, plant height, node number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight of seedlings were high in longer-SGP treatments, the T/R ratio was high in SGP 45 and SGP 85 treatments compared with other treatments. At 10 weeks after planting, plant height, stem diameter and leaf area of plants treated with SGP 45 and SGP 55 were significantly higher compared to other treatments. Fresh and dry weight of the plant with SGP 45 treatment was greatest, however, the dry matter percentage with SGP 45 was low compared to other treatments. Fruiting number and weight per plant were highest in SGP 45 treatment. Shorter SGP treatments such as 45 and 55 days gave greatly increased total weight of ripened fruit at 18 weeks after planting. Our results showed that SGP for hot pepper grown in the open field influences plant growth parameters and marketable yield, so that SGP 45 to SGP 55 is optimum to cultivate hot pepper plant.
A field experiment was conducted to study seasonal evapotranspiration above soybean canopy and its relationship with dry matter production by the Bowen ratio-energy balance method. The soybean "Paldalkong" was sown with the space of $47{\times}10cm$ at Suwon on May 27, 1988. The daily net radiation ranged from 59 to 76 percents of the total shortwave radiation under cloudless conditions, which was lower than cloud overcast condition with recorded 63 to 83 percents. The latent heat flux under overcast condition was sometimes larger than the sum of net radiation, implying transportation of energy by advection of ambient air. The linear relationship was obtained between daily or daytime net radiation and evapotranspiration. The evapotranspiration calculated by Bowen ratio-energy balance method was about 150 percent of class A pan evaporation during the growing season. The total solar radiation from June 20 to August 27 was $1043MJm^{-2}$. The 85 percent of the total shortwave radiation was used for evaporative heat. The dry matter production within the period was $836gm^{-2}$ and the water use efficiency was $2.31gDM\;kg^{-1}\;H_2O$.

This experiment was carried out in order to study the effect of fertilizer application and seasonal changes on the productivity of the native reed (Phragmites communis Trinius) on the reclaimed tidal flate in Chonnam province. The samples of reed were taken at about 30-days interval from May to October, 1982 and evaluated plant height, blade & sheath-stem ratio, grass yield, the feed compositions and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVD). The results are summarized as follows: 1. Plant height, grass yield, crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility of the reed were significantly increased by fertilizer application, and ADF content was significantly decreased. 2. According to the significance test of coefficience, there was a significant negative correlation (P<0.05) between in vitro dry matter digestibility and plant height, grass yield, and the content of crude fiber and ADF, but a positive correlation (P<0.05) between in vitro dry matter digestibility and blade & sheath-stem ratio, and the content of crude protein and crude fat.
In order to obtain a basic information related to the utility of Sinorhizobium fredii for field soybean, the effectiveness and competitiveness of nine fast-growing S. fredii strains including TAL 1871 etc. were examined on eleven Korean soybean(Glycin max L.) cultivars. Nine S. fredii strains all modulated soybean cv. Kwangkyo, but did not Danyeobkong. The averaged shoot dry weight by S. fredii strain TAL 1781, TAL 1840, TAL 1899 marked only about 53% as compared to that by Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain YCK 213 and USDA 110. The shoot dry weight by S. fredii strains, of which TAL 1781 was the most effective in that, was increased by coinoculation with B. japonicum YCK 213 rather than with B. japonicum USDA 110. Nodule occupancy by S. fredii ranged from 8.3 to 26.7% in coinoculation with B. japonicum YCK 213, but did from 10.0 to 30.0% with B. japonicum USDA 110. These results indicated that S. fredii strains were inferior effective and competitive to B. japonicum strains.

This experiment was carried out to determine the growth characteristics, dry matter and TDN yield of corn for silage (Zea mays L.), soil nitrate in infiltration water by chemical fertilizer and different manure application(C; chemical fertilizer + chemical fertilizer, T1; Lime +chemical fertilizer + chemical fertilizer, T2; swine manure + swine manure, T3; Lime + swine manure + swine manure, T4; swine manure +chemical fertilizer). The results obtained are summarizes as follows; The mean growth characteristics of T3 treatment(soil treatment: lime + base fertilizer: liquid manure + additional fertilizer: chemical fertilizer) was higher than those of other treatments. The highest yield of dry matter and TDN was obtained in T3 treatment with 18,611 and 13,746 kg/ha, respectively(P<0.05), and the lowest in T1 treatment with 13,529 and 9,541 kg/ha, respectively(P<0.05). The contents of NDF and ADF were not significant different among treatments. However, NDF and ADF content among treatments were the highest with T1 treatment and the lowest with T3 treatment. $NO_3$ level of soil was hardly influenced by the different manure application treatment, and not affected during the experiment time.

To find out the productivity of temperate grasses on the south and north slope, a field experiment was conducted with five forage species of Cactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea, Phleum pratense, Agrostis gigantea and Trifolium repens. It was treated by randomized block design with 4 replications and lasted from September, 1983 to October, 1986 in Suweon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. During the vegetative period for three years, the mean surface temperature and soil temperature at a depth of lOcm on the south exposure were 2.0^{\circ}C$ and 0.8^{\circ}C$ respectively higher than that of north slope, but the soil temperature between exposures were practically not different in the mid-summer season. 2. Early growth and development of forage species on the north exposure were better than that of species on the south slope. 3. Average DM yield of grasses on the north slope was much more increased than that of species on the south, however, Trifolium repens was more positive in the south. 4. Otherwise average DM yield of Dactylis glomerata and Festuca arundinacea on the north slope was a little more increased, that of Phleum pratense and Agrostis gigantea was much more increased than that of same forage species on the south.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of long-day (LD) period before short-day (SD) treatment on the vegetative growth of greenhouse-grown cut chrysanthemum cv. Reagan Improved at Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands. Rooted cuttings of cut chrysanthemum cv, Reagan Improved were transplanted on 6th, 13th, 20th of September and all of them were treated with LD before SD treatment on 27th of September, The periods from transplanting until final harvest were 70, 77, and 84 days for 1, 2, and 3 week-LD treatment, respectively. The final plant height increased in the plot of 3 week-LD period and decreased in the plot of 1 week-LD period before the SD treatment. Total fresh weight and the leaf area were increased more in the plot of 3 week-LD period than that of 1 week-LD period, but the absolute growth rate after SD treatment was the same on plant growth rate and increase of the number of leaves in all treatments. The final dry matter production (g.m$^{-2}$ ) was increased more in the plot of 3 week-LD period than that of 1, 2week-LD period before SD treatment. Plant height and fresh weight were followed by the condition of LD period. In addition, dry mass production was highest in 3 week-LD period.

This experiment was carried out to determine the harvesting day after heading of barley for highest total forage yield in double cropping with corn at paddy field in middle region. The fresh barley yield was the highest at the harvest of 20 days after heading, but the dry matter yield and TDN yield were the highest at the harvest of 25 days after heading because of higher dry matter rate. The dry matter yield of corn after the harvest of 25 days after heading was decreased about 16 percent than that of the check, sowing on april 25. But total fresh yield of corn monoculture was lower about 31 percent, and decreased 28 percent of dry matter and 23 percent of TDN yield, respectively, than that of the double cropping system with corn and barley. In double cropping system at paddy field, the total forage yield was the highest at the harvest of 25 days after heading of barley and grew corn subsequently. Although yield of corn was reduced by late sowing, the total forage yield was increased by double cropping system compared with corn monoculture.
The aquatic plants were cultivated in pots containing pig waste water, adjusted to three levels of $NH_4-N$ concentration 50, 100 and 200ppm. The aquatic plants were Eichhornia crassipes solms-laub, Monochoria korsakowii Regel et maack, Zizania caduciflora, Typha orientalis, Acorus asiaticus, Cyperus exaltaus, Colocasia antiquorum var. Yield, content and amount of nitrogen and phosphorus absorped by plants, and growth status were investigated. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The content and removal amount of nitrogen and phosphrus by plants were the highest in Eichhornia crassipes solms-laub. 2. Yield of dry matter in plants in 100ppm $NH_4-N$ was in the order of Eichhornia crassipes solms-laub>Zizania caduciflora>Typha orientalis>Monochoria korsakowii Regel et maack>Acorus asiaticus. 3. The removal amount of nitrogen by plants in the 100ppm $NH_4-N$ was in the order of Eichhornia crassipes solms-laub>Zizania caduciflora>Monochoria korsakowii Regel et maack>Typha orientalis>Acorus asiaticus>Colocasia antiquorum var>Cyperus exaltatus. Removal amount of phosphorus was in the order of Eichhornia cras sipes solms-laub>Monochoria korsakowii Regel et maack>Zizania caducilora>Typha orientalis>Acorus asiaticus> Cyperus exaltatus>Colocasia antiquorum var. 4. Concentration causing growth damage was 200ppm of $NH_4-N$ in Eichhornia crassipes solms-laub, Zizania caduciflora and Typha orientalis and 100ppm in Monochoria korsakowii Regel et maack and Acorus asiaticus. 5. Nitrogen content was the highest in leaf and phosphorus content was the highest in float of the water hyacinth. 6. The number of panicles of the water hyacinth increased by 752 pieces and dry matters were about 5,000kg/l0a during one year.

Livestock manure have been utilized as fertilizer, and trying to make resources natural circulation of organic materials. This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of swine slurry on production and nutritive value of rye, and to determine optimal application level for 2 years from Oct. 2000 to May 2002 in the experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute. Summary of the results were as follows. The application of swine slurry 200% Plot showed the best regrowth after winter and lodging was severe in all plots except non-fertilized plot. Plant height was lower in lodging plots. The dry matter yield was not significantly difference between chemical fertilizer(CF) plot and swine slurry application plots, and swine slurry 100% + CF 50% plot showed the highest yield among manure application plots. The dry matter yield per input nitrogen was 80kg in CF, 81kg in swine slurry 100% application plot. Above the level, it was decreased severely by 41 ∼ 61kg. Conclusively, application to swine slurry 100% showed superior productivity considering the DM yield per input nitrogen, That level would be recommended to produce higher yield and to conserve environment.
