A Comparative Study on the International Factoring of Korea, China and Japan (한·중·일 국제팩토링에 관한 비교연구)

  • International factoring is necessary for small & medium export companies because using documentary credit has been declined and credit transaction has increased. In Korea, however, only EXIM bank supports the factoring service, apart from foreign banks. Even though the amount of international factoring has increased in Korea, factoring service is at a standstill, compared to its trade volume. Perhaps there are a few reasons but the biggest reason for the indifference to the factoring service is a lack of understanding and inadequate legal system in Korea. This paper aims to compare factoring service in Korea with that of China and Japan. And it also suggests the improvement of problems to the factoring service by analysing the examples of business practice.

Relationship between Government-owned Banks and Firm Size (정부소유 은행과 거래 기업 규모의 관계)

  • This study examined the impact of Government-ownership of banks on the firm size using South Korean data. The impact of Government ownership of banks as both the largest lender of government banks and the bank loan dependency of firms on government-ownership bank were measured. Empirical models considering endogenous problems and various effects of firm size were developed. All results in this paper showed that government-ownership of the main banks might have a relationship with the smaller firms. In addition, the bank loan dependency of firms on government-ownership banks might have effects on the firm size. A higher loan dependency of firms on government-owned banks resulted in smaller firms. This study used micro firm level data to analyze, from several perspectives, the relationship between government-owned banks and firm size. The existing studies go as far as inferring the effects of government-owned banks showing theoretical evidence, performing surveys, or using international comparison data. This study is differentiated from existing studies in that it analyzed in a direct manner the effects of the government-owned banks on both the firm size. This study provides insights into the privatization of government-owned banks.

A Study on Determinants of the Number of Banking Relationships in Korea: Firm-specific Determinants and Effects of Business Cycle (우리나라 기업의 거래은행 수 결정요인에 관한 연구: 경기변동의 영향을 포함하여)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the determinants of the number of bank relationships in Korea. Firm-specific determinants considered here include leverage, size, age, return on asset, investment grade, tangibility, liquidity, R&D expenditure. We estimate the effects of these variables, and compare the results with those from previous studies performed for other economies. Concerning the effects of business cycle, we find that the business cycle is an important factor in determining the number of bank relationships. The number of bank relationships varies over the business cycle, and we notice a counter-cyclical behavior, which means the number decreases during economic expansions and increases during contractions. This result can be interpreted as a result of firms' diversification of borrowings into multiple banks in order to reduce the liquidity risk during the recession. In the subsets, however, the number of bank relationships for large firms is stable regardless of the business cycle. Unlisted firms, non-chaebol, and low credit quality firms which have relatively limited access to alternative sources of financing show counter-cyclical behavior. Finally, such phenomena is not observed in the non-competitive credit market, while they show a counter-cyclical behavior in the competitive credit market.

A study about the effects of online commerce on the local retail commercial area (온라인 거래의 증가가 지역 소매 상권에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the effects of the increase in online shopping and its effects on real-world commercial outlets. The empirical analysis of this study is based on the results of "Census on Establishments" and "Online Shopping Survey" that cover 15 years, from 2002 to 2016. According to the results of this study, the increase in the number of online transactions affects the decrease in the number of stores in the real-world retail sector. However, non-specialized large stores and chain convenience stores showed an increase in the number of stores. In addition, the number of F&B stores increased the most in line with the increase in online transactions. This is because the increase in online transactions and in internet users led to the use of more delivery applications and the introduction of popular places on blogs or through social media. Street-level rents for medium and large-sized locations increased. In other words, it is seen that the demand for differentiated real-world stores that provide a good user experience increases, even though online transactions also increase. These results suggest that real-world stores should provide good user experiences in their physical locations with a certain size and assortment of goods.
