  • Rod-shaped particle reinforced $LiAlO_2$ matrices for MCFC were fabricated by an aqueous tape-casting technique. The hydrolysis reaction and agglomeration of $\gamma-LiAlO_2$ particles in aqueous slurries were inhibited by additions of $LiOH{\cdot}H_2O$ and glycerin to the aqueous $\gamma-LiAlO_2$ slurry. The tape-casting, performed using the aqueous slurry containing protein albumin, was fast and led to an effective drying at casting temperature range of $60{\sim}65^{\circ}C$. The strength of the particle reinforced matrix was improved about 4 times compared to that of matrix without reinforcement. Pore size distribution ($0.1{\sim}0.4{\mu}m$) and porosity ($50{\sim}60%$) of the reinforced matrices were determined to be appropriate for the MCFC matrix. The aqueous tape casting process is not only environmental-friendly but also efficient for fabricating MCFC matrices compared to non-aqueous tape casting.

  • Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) consist of such reinforcements as carbides, nitrides, borides and oxides, which have high melting points, low density, high modulus and high strength, for the purpose of increasing toughness. These materials are used for heat shielding systems for aerospace vehicles, high-temperature gas turbine combustion chambers, turbine blades, stator vane parts, etc. Oxide CMCs are used for the components of burner and flame holder and the high-temperature gas duct. CMCs are also applied to brake disks, which are subjected to severe thermal shock, and slide bearing parts under heavy loads. The research and development of the CMC are progressed for the strategic purpose in defense and energy industry; for instance, for aerospace applications in the U.S., and for hyper-speed aircraft, gas turbines, and atomic fissions in U.S., Japan, and Europe.

  • In this work, the effect of anodic oxidation on surface characteristics of high strength PAN-based carbon fibers was investigated in mechanical interfacial properties of composites. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by acid-base values, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angles. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). As a result, the acidity or the $O_{ls}/C_{ls}$ ratio of carbon fiber surfaces was increased, due to the development of the oxygen functional groups. Consequently, the anodic oxidation led to an increase in surface free energy of the carbon fibers, mainly due to the increase of its specific (or polar) component. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including ILSS and $K_{IC}$, had been improved in the anodic oxidation on fibers. These results were explained that good wetting played an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fibers and epoxy resin matrix.

  • The electrolytic plating of a metallic nickel on carbon fiber surfaces was carried out to improve mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites. The surface characteristics of carbon fibers and the mechanical interfacial properties of final composites were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), respectively. It was found that the electrolytic Ni-plating conditions significantly affected the degree of adhesion at interfaces between carbon fibers and epoxy resin matrix in a composite system. Especially, the increase of O,$_{1s}$/$C_{1s}$ ratio, production of NiO groups, and formation of metallic nickel on the nickel-plated carbon fiber surfaces led to an increase of the ILSS of the composites. Also, the ILSS of the composites was greatly correlated with the $O_{1s}$/$C_{1s}$ ratio of the carbon fibers treated in this work.is work.

  • Considering of utilizing renewable resources and recycled plastics, green composites consisted of recycled polyethylene (PE) as matrix and eco-friendly natural fibers as reinforcement were processed and characterized in the present study. First, the wood flour/recycled polyethylene pellets with different wood flour contents were prepared by twin-screw extrusion processing. Using the pellets, wood flour/recycled polyethylene green composites were fabricated and the effects of wood flour loading on their flexural, tensile, impact properties, heat deflection temperature and fracture behavior were investigated. It was concluded that the flexural strength, flexural modulus, tensile modulus and heat deflection temperature of wood flour/recycled polyethylene green composites were increased with wood flour, whereas the tensile strength and impact strength were decreased. The fracture behavior observed by means of scanning electron microscopy supported qualitatively the tendency of the impact strength with wood flour loading, compared with the ductile fracture pattern of recycled polyethylene.

  • In this paper, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were ozonized and the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behaviors of CNTs-filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conductive composites were studied. The results of element analysis (EA) and FT-IR indicate that the oxygen-containing functional groups on the CNTs surfaces, such as O-H, C-O, and C=O groups, were increased with the ozonization. Electrical resistivities of the CNTs/HDPE composites were measured by using a digital multimeter. The resistivity of the composites was increased abruptly near the crystalline melting temperature of the HDPE used as matrix, which could be attributed to the destruction of conductive network by the thermal expansion of HDPE. And, the PTC intensity of the CNTs/HDPE composites was increased with the increase of the ozone treatment time. It was probably due to the growing of maximum volume resistivity of the composites induced by the increased oxygen-containing functional groups in the CNTs surfaces.

  • We examined, using thermoanalytical methods, the effects of $2000^{\circ}C$ heat-treated graphite powders and heating rate of cure after impregnation on the thermal stability and carbon yield of furfuryl alcohol, which is frequently used not only as an impregnant but also as a matrix precursor for carbon fiber-reinforced carbon composites. It was founded that the addition of 30wt% graphite powders to furfuryl alcohol and the heating rate of $35^{\circ}C$/min showed the highest thermal stability of furfuryl alcohol/graphite powder mixture. The carbon yield above $1000^{\circ}C$ was enhanced more than 10% in comparison with the absence of graphite powders. It would be expected that this result can contribute to some extent to reduce the repeating number of processing cycle (carbonization-impregnation-cure-re-carbonization) required to densify a carbonaceous composite.
