  • A fish-bone girder pier affects torsion severely because of the one girder system. This study was performed to develop an analytical model to analyze and design a fish-bone girder pier properly. This model consisted of a beam element with 7-degrees of freedom considering the warping rigidity. Several beam-column connection conditions were considered. The static load test was performed using a real size specimen. The validity of this model was tested by a comparison of the analytical results with the experimental results. This analytical model is useful for designing the bolt connection of a Spine girder.

  • Al-Cu alloy has been used as a circuit material for its low resistance and ease to process for long years at CMOS technology. However, basically metal is very susceptible to corrosion and which has been a long pending trouble in various fields using metal. The defect causes the reliability concerns, so improved methods are necessary to reduce the defect. In the various corrosion parameters, PR strip process conditions after metal etch and optimal cleaning solutions are controllable and increase the process margin to prevent the metal corrosion. This study proposes that chlorine residue after metal etch as the source of metal corrosion, and charges should be removed by optimizing PR strip process condition and cleaning condition.

  • A power supply of cathode has been developed for hall-effect thruster for small satellite. A microwave cathode has been applied to the electric propulsion system and cathode power is necessary in oder to work securely. Anode current is varied by a flow rate controlled by anode tank pressure. Then cathode current has to be controled in proportion by anode current. So cathode power supply has been designed to offer a current proportional to anode current. Also cathode power has been tuned to work securely for cathode to emit more electron than anode within 0.03A. The function test of cathode power was performed by constructing an equivalent load for anode and cathode. It has been tested in a vacuum chamber in order to ensure a stable operation of the thruster. And it was confirmed that thruster normally has been operated in the space environment after the launch.

  • In order to see the effects of talker sidetone on a talker's speech level quantitatively when he converses with others on a telephone, we reviewed the measuring algorithm of speech level and assessed variation of speech level due to that of sidetone masking rating(STMR). We measured room noise effects on speech level, when STMR values were changed, as well. If we consider the effects of talker sidetone and room noise on speech level, the results of experiments suggest that a talker continuously tries to keep the psychological loudness of his own speech, heard by himeself via a telephone handset, at the constant and comfortable level by controlling his speaking level according as STMR value and room noise are change. That is, because the amount of his speech masked by his talker sidetone and room noise is different when STMR value and room noise are changed, we can see the tendency that he controls his speaking level in order to keep the perceived psychological loudness of his own speech to be constant.

  • This paper summarizes a study on the application of the friction pendulum system in bridge seismic isolation. Shaking table tests have been carried out on a model structure isolated with F.P.S and the obtained structural responses are compared to those of non-isolated. It can be concluded the F.P.S increases the earthquake resistance capacity of the isolated structure. It is also found that the stiffness of bearing, being controlled by the radius of curvature of the spherical sliding interface, is unaffected by the amplitude of the input excitation. Furthermore, the coefficient of sliding friction is velocity dependent so that in weak excitation the sliding velocity is low and, accordingly, the mobilized friction force is less than the one mobilized in strong excitation. Also, the frictional properties of the bearings remain markedly stable after extensive testing, and the permanent displacements are small and not cumulative in successive earthquakes.

  • Dynamic elastoplastic LPM (lumped parameter mass) analyses are carried out in order to investigate the seismic resistant performance of a typical high-rise shear wall apartment subjected to several earthquakes. Three-dimensional nonlinear pushover analysis is adopted to estimate initial elastic stiffness, yielding strength and post-yielding stiffness of each story for the time history analysis of LPM shear model. For the hysteresis of each story, Clough and bilinear models are used with the input of four recorded earthquake ground motions of EI Centro 1940 NS, Taft 1952 EW, Hachinohe 1968 NS and Kobe 1995 NS, of which the amplitudes are scaled down to have the same maximum ground velocity of 12 kine. The result shows that yieldings take place in most storys of the building, i.e. the earthquake resistant capacity of this high-rise shear wall apartment is not sufficient at the event of earthquake M=5~6.

  • Recently, the resizing algorithms based on the displacement participation factors have been developed for sizing members to satisfy stiffness criteria. It is proved that this resizing algorithms made for utilizing worker's stiffness design are practical and rational due to the simplicity and convenience of the method. The resizing algorithm can be practically and effectively applied to drift design of buildings. However, the researches on the change of inelastic behavior by the resizing algorithm has been insufficient. To identify the effect on the inelastic behavior of buildings by the resizing method, this study used the reinforced concrete shear wall-frame example. Through the application of the resizing method, the weights of shear wall in the lower class and the weights of columns and beams in the upper class increased respectively. And the initial stiffness of the building increased and the ductility of the buildings had similar with that of the initial structure.

  • Objective: To evaluate the effect of acupuncture on streptozotocin(STZ)-treated rats by subcutaneous implantation of osmotic pump. Methods: STZ was administered to rats at a low dose with osmotic pump to induce beta cell death and diabetes (STZ osmotic pump model), The experimental animals were divided into 4 groups: 1. The control group which was not treated in the STZ osmotic pump model 2. The sham group which was acupunctured at an arbitrary point in the STZ osmotic pump model 3. The sample A group which was acupunctured at the Chung-wan($CV_{12}$) in the STZ osmotic pump model 4. The sample B group which was acupunctured at the Chok-samni($ST_{36}$) in the STZ osmotic pump model. The effect of acupuncture in the STZ osmotic pump model was observed by measuring the serum glucose level and immunostaining of pancreatic tissue of the rats. Results : STZ injection by subcutaneous implantation of osmotic pump caused hyperglycemia by destroying the pancreatic beta cell selectively. Acupuncture at the Chung-wan acupuncture point($CV_{12}$) and Jhok-samni acupuncture point ($ST_{36}$) in the STZ osmotic pump model separately resulted in a decrease of the serum glucose level. In addition, the cyto-protective effect of the pancreatic beta-cell was detected in the STZ osmotic pump model by acupuncture. And there were few differences between the effects of acupuncture at the CV12 and $ST_{36}$. Conclusion : Acupuncture at the CV12 and ST36 had beneficial effects on Type II diabetes mellitus, and action mechanism of the effect was thought to be concerned with secretion of endogenous beta-endorphin.

  • This study was conducted to provide tending operation information for the effective management in unmanaged artificial forests of Pinus densiflora for. erecta, Pinus rigida, and larix leptolepis, based on the study of the comparison of tree growth pattern by residual stand density after thinning practices. Followings are summarized results of this study. 1. The diameter growth of residual trees was increased as residual stand density decreased by thinning practices in the stands of Pinus densiflora for. erecta, and Pinus rigida, and subcompartment (Ga) and (Na) of Larix leptolepis. The statistical analysis noted that the tree growth was significantly different by the residual stand density. 2. The height growth did not show corresponding results by stand density treatment pattern, which indicated that the height growth was not directly influenced by residual stand density, but by site quality of the stand. 3. The diameter increment for the last six years was proportionately increased in larger diameter classes and less dense stands.

  • The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a widely used model organism in biological research. Thanks to the availability of well-established knowledge about its neural connectivity, a wide range of studies have been attempted to uncover the relationship between behaviors and the responsible neurons. In our research, the adaptive behavior of C. elegans in solid environments with different surface rigidities is investigated, where the worm adapts to different mechanical stiffnesses by modulating its crawling waveform. The amplitude and wavelength of the crawling waveform decrease as the environment becomes more rigid. Interestingly, the mechanosensation-defective mutant shows different responses to the surface rigidity compared to those of the wild-type worm. To explain the adaptation process in mechanically different environments, we suggest a plausible neural circuit model.
