  • The Korea Meteorological Administration has operated the Automatic Weather Stations, of the average 13 km horizontal resolution, to observe rainfall. However, an additional RADAR network also has been operated in all-weather conditions, because AWS network could not observed rainfall over the sea. In general, the rain rate is obtained by estimating the relationship between the radar reflectivity (Z) and the rainfall (R). But this empirical relationship needs to be optimized on the rainfall over the Korean peninsula. This study was carried out to optimize the Z-R relationship in the summer of 2014 using a parallel Micro Genetic Algorithm. The optimized Z-R relationship, $Z=120R^{1.56}$, using a micro genetic algorithm was different from the various Z-R relationships that have been previously used. However, the landscape of the fitness function found in this study looked like a flat plateau. So there was a limit to the fine estimation including the complex development and decay processes of precipitation between the ground and an altitude of 1.5km.

  • As most of small fishing boats made of FRP have been constructed by experience in Korea, some structural safety problems have been occurred occasionally. To improve the structural strength and reduce the costs for construction and operation, optimum design for small fishing boat was carried out in this study. The weight of fishing boat and the main dimensions of structural members are chosen as objective function and design variables, respectively. By the combination of global and local search methods, a hybrid optimization algorithm was developed to escape the local minima and reduce CPU time in analysis procedure, and finite element analysis was performed to determine the constraint parameters at each iteration step in optimization loop. Optimization results were compared with the real existing fishing boat, and the effects of optimum design were examined from points of view; structural strength, material cost, etc.

  • The extrusion conditions of the soymilk residue and corn grits mixtures were optimized. The experiment was designed according to the D-optimal design of response surface methodology (RSM), which shows 18 experimental points including 4 replicates for three independent variables (screw speed, water content and die temperature). The responses variables such as bending force, expansion ratio, bulk density, water solubility index (WSI), water absorption index (WAI), and color values (L*, a*, b*) were evaluated using response surface analysis. Expansion ratio and WSI decreased with increasing water content, whereas bulk density tended to increase with increasing water content. While greater screw speeds enhanced WSI and yellowness, higher moisture contents decreased the expansion ratio and WSI value. However, die temperature did not influence upon the response variables. The optimum extrusion conditions by numerical and graphical methods were similar: the screw speed, water content, and die temperature were 250 rpm, 22.43% and l28.16$^{\circ}C$ by the numerical method; 250 rpm, 22.43%, and 128.02$^{\circ}C$ by graphical method.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) is an optimization technique based on natural evolution theory to find the global optimal solution. Unlike the gradient-based method, it can design nanoscale structures in the electric field because it does not require sensitivity calculation. This research intends to design a nanoaperture with an unprecedented shape by the topology optimization scheme based on the GA and ON/OFF method in the visible frequency range. This research mainly aims to maximize the transmission rate at a measuring area located 10nm under the exit plane and to minimize the electric distribution at other locations. The finite element analysis (FEA) and optimization process are performed by using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the Matlab programming. The final results of the optimized model are analyzed by a comparison of the electric field intensity and the spot size of near field with those of the initial model.

  • With recent advancements in autonomous driving technology, vehicles are evolving beyond being simple means of transportation to become spaces for rest and work. As a result, the development of seat frames that maximize the use of interior space has been actively pursued. In particular, the electrification of containment sinking seats has emerged as a significant challenge, especially regarding the structural strength design of seat frame components as they transition from manual to automated systems. This study aims to convert the manual folding mechanism of the sinking seat frame into an automated mechanism using electric motors and to design the required component specifications and strength during the process. The main components for electrification were simplified, and, in particular, the design variables related to the placement angle and length of the electric motor applied to the cushion bracket were set at three levels, with subsequent 3D modeling conducted. The study results are as follows: Firstly, multi-body dynamic analysis showed that, compared to the standard configuration, an optimal motor arrangement angle can reduce motor force and torque by 30.25% and 6.7%, respectively. Secondly, strength analysis, considering the maximum allowable motor load and rear moment for each cushion bracket configuration, indicated that deformation and stress could be reduced by 13.76% and 34.95%, respectively, through the optimal angle and length. Finally, the optimal configuration of the cushion bracket, which aligns with the multi-body dynamic analysis results, was determined. This process is expected to provide a useful reference for future design strategies for automated seat frames.

  • This paper deals with the optimal design of a elevator inverter system based on the customized IPM. The proposed method reduces dv/dt and di/dt, which resulted in the minimized conducted EMI noise without an additional circuitry. It only optimizes the value of gate resistor in the IGBT embedded in the IPM. In order to optimize the customized IPM to a elevator system, we simulated and measured the spike voltage and the motor surge voltage including the temperature variation due to the switching losses at the IPM case and heat-sink. As a result, thanks to the optimized value of the gate resister in the IPM, the conducted EMI noise is reduced approx. 5∼10 [dB$\mu$V] in a particular frequency domain.

  • 3-Dimensional flow which is represented by horseshoe vortex is generated as a type of secondary flow about the main flow. As well, it causes the flow loss. The present study deals with the leading edge fence shape on a wing-body junction to decrease a horseshoe vortex, one of the main factors to generate the secondary flow losses. The shape of leading-edge fence was optimized with the design variables of the installed height, length, width, and thickness of the fence as the design variables. Approximate optimization design method is used as the optimization. The study was investigated using $FLUENT^{TM}$ and $iSIGHT^{TM}$. Total pressure coefficient of the optimized design case was decreased about 7.5 % compare to the baseline case.
