  • Nonlinear behavior and large deformation cannot be analyzed using techniques based on linear theory. Nonetheless, they are emerging as gradually huge and complex structures. In addition, the optimum design of structure is necessary in the development of high-performance computation and numerical methods. as well as stricter design-criterion. Therefore, the structural problems in engineering that are limited to the linear region must be extended to the nonlinear region. Likewise, structural behavior must be accurately analyzed. In turn, this requires considering the expected problems beforehand. Only then can an efficient, economical, and optimized structure be designed. This paper presents the solution of the geometrical nonlinear problem of anisotropic cylindrical shell. The characteristics of the geometrical nonlinear behavior of anisotropic circular cylindrical shells may vary according to several causes. e.g., change of fibers, curvature in the circumferential direction, subtended angle, aspect, etc. Parametric studies were conducted to determine the effect of factors on the large deflection behavior of laminated shells, with interesting observations.

  • Applications of corrugated plates (or folded plates) have been recently increasing due to certain economic and structural advantages. Likewise, applications of corrugated plates has been increasing because they are stronger compared to flat plates. Therefore, specifications of corrugated plates should be determined. There are many design details in almost every specification for flat plates. However, except the bending strength and the normal strength, there are no detailed design guides such as shear strength. Thus, it is difficult for engineers to design structures consisting of corrugated plates. As such, engineers need a guide in designing corrugated plates. Extensive numerical study was conducted in order to identify the relationship between the shear strength and geometric conditions for corrugated plates. An eight-node thin shell element (QSL8) of the commercial program LUSAS (version 13.2) was used. The study was able to come up with a formula that helps determine the shear strength of corrugated plates under various geometric conditions, the size of corrugation, the curvature of corrugation, and the thickness of the corrugated plate. Likewise, corrugated plates were found to have a higher shear buckling strength than flat plates.

  • Estimating appropriate construction cost at the design phase is judged with one important issue to the efficient security and the execution of budget. Therefore, in this paper, to build fundamental data of appropriate construction cost for steel box bridges, the existing calculated document such as the quantity, unit price document and detail items etc.. was analyzed and the basic specification of the bridges was investigated. Also, by estimating the relationship between predetermined cost and construction items on the bridges, the paper is intended to produce basic data for the calculation of appropriate construction cost in planning phase. From the result, it was calculated ratio of construction item in the total construction cost and unit cost. And then it was deduced effect factor of construction cost in steel box bridge.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behavior of concrete-filled tube columns for footing connections. Eight specimens were tested to investigate such structural behavior according to the column base type. The specimens consisted of concrete-filled steel tube columns (or bare steel tube columns), reinforced concrete footings, and base plates (or stud connectors). The specimens were subjected to lateral cyclic load. The cyclic load was applied according to a predetermined strength sequence. The results of the experiment indicated that the flexural strength of the stud-connector- type column base is higher than that of the base-plate-type column base. The structural behavior of the concrete-filled tube column base was similar to that of the bare steel column base.

  • As a new structural system, the diagrid system resists both gravity and lateral loads with diagonal columns. In current seismic design provisions, however, the response modification factor for a new structural system is not provided yet. ATC-63 provides a new methodology for defining various seismic performance factors, including the response modification factor. ATC-63 includes the collapse margin ratio in modifying the response modification factor, which can vary with many structural systems. In this paper, a non-linear static analysis and a dynamic analysis were conducted for four different diagrid models with 4-to 36-story heights. From these analyses, the response modification factor of the diagrid system was evaluated.

  • The seismic responses of a building are affected by the base soil conditions. In this study, linear time-history seismic analysis and nonlinear pushover static seismic analysis were performed to estimate the base shear forces of 3-, 5-, and 7-story steel buildings, considering the rigid and soft soil conditions. Foundation soil stiffness, based on the equivalent static stiffness formula, is used for the damper, one of the Link elements in SAP 2000. The base shear forces of the steel buildings, estimated through time-history analysis using the general-purpose structural-analysis program of SAP 2000, were compared with those calculated using the domestic seismic design code, the UBC-97 design response spectrum. and pushover static nonlinear analysis. The steel buildings designed for gravity and wind loads showed elastic responses with a moderate earthquake of 0.11 g, while the elastic soft-soil layer increased the displacement and the base shear force of the buildings due to soil-structure interaction and soil amplification. Therefore, considering the characteristics of the soft-soil layer, it is more reasonable to perform an elastic seismic analysis of a building's structure during weak or moderate earthquakes.

  • Stud shear connectors are the most commonly used shear connectors: up to 22mm studs are usually used in steel-concrete composite structures. To expand the current design codes for stud connectors, large studs with a diameter of more than 25mm should be investigated. Through push-out tests on large stud shear connectors that transcend the limitation of current design codes, fatigue behavior was investigated and comparisons with design equations performed. The shear stiffness of the connectors in elastic range was evaluated through shear tests on 25mm, 27mm, and 30mm studs and compared with those from static tests. The fatigue behavior of large studs was discussed in terms of residual slip and load-slip curves. The initiation of fatigue cracks in the welding part could be detected through the history of displacement range. Test results showed that the design fatigue endurance of S-N curves in current design codes could be applied to large stud shear connector.

  • New design equations for calculating the lateral-torsional buck ling moment resistances of stepped I-section beams with/without continuous lateral top-flange bracing subjected to a point load, a series of point loads, and a uniformly distributed load, are suggested based on the results of elastic finite-element analyses. The new equations presented in this study are compared with the current moment gradient modifiers presented by other researchers and specifications. Although the study paper presents mainly stepped-beam cases subjected to a point load and a uniformly distributed load. The proposed equations include the length-to-height ratio effects for stepped beams with continuous lateral top-flange bracing. The new moment gradient correction factors could be easily used to calculate the lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance of stepped I-beams.

  • Probabilistic risk assessment was conducted on a hybrid cable-stayed bridge consisting of a steel-composite plate girder and a concrete girder with a long span, designed using the working stress design and strength design methods. The component reliabilities of the bridge's cables, pylons, girders, and steel-concrete conjunction were evaluated using the AFOSM(Advanced First Order Second Moment) algorithm and the simulation technique at the critical sections, based on the maximum axial force, shear, and positive and negative moments of the selected sections. For the analysis of system reliability, the hybrid cable-stayed bridge consisting of cables, pylons, and plate girders was modeled into combined failure modes, and for system reliability, the probabilities of failure and reliability index of the structural system were evaluated. Based on the results of this study, the critical failure modes of the hybrid cable-stayed bridge based on the bridge's structural characteristics are suggested, and the efficiency of the partial ETA technique for use in the risk assessment method was confirmed.

  • When the material strength and ductility of shear studs is sufficient to carry the interface shear force, the composite beam can behave safely without premature structural failure in the interface and without ultimate moment reduction. In this study, the influence of the deformation capacity of shear studs embedded in high-strength concrete on structural behavior and design condition of composite beam is analyzed using FEM. In the analysis, load type, degree of shear connection and arrangement of studs are considered as analysis parameters. According to analysis results, in the case of partial interaction, the deformation capacity of studs embedded in high-strength concrete should be considered together with material strength. Especially in the case of uniform arrangement of studs and uniformly distributed load, a minimum available degree of shear connection is restricted by the deformation capacity of studs. In this case, shear studs should be arranged in consideration of the distribution of shear force at the composite section.
