  • To investigate contributory factors of CSF shunt failure, 237 patients, who underwent shunt placement from January 1995 to December 1998 at our hospital, were reviewed retrospectively. The causes of the hydrocephalus were tumor, hemorrhage, infection, congenital anomaly, normal pressure hydrocephalus, trauma and others. One hundred nine revisions of CSF shunting were done during follow up periods. The causes of shunt revisions were mechanical obstruction, malposition, infection and others. The contributory factors of CSF shunt failure and shunt survival rate were analyzed using SPSS. The shunt survival rate at 1, 2 and 3 years after procedure was 77.1%, 75.4%, 74.1% respectively. In the young age group below 10 years old, postinfectous hydrocephalus was the most common high risk factor for shunt revision. In conclusion, the most shunt failures developed in the first year after surgery and the age and causes of the hydrocephalus were major determinant factors of shunt revision.

  • In modern society, various crimes is occurred. It is necessary to predict the criminal in order to prevent crimes, various studies on the prediction of crime is in progress. Crime-related data, is announced to the statistical processing of once a year from the Public Prosecutor's Office. However, relative to the current point in time, data that has been statistical processing is a data of about two years ago. It does not fit to the data of the crime currently being generated. In This paper, crime prediction data was apply with Naver trend data. By using the Web traffic Naver trend, it is possible to obtain the data of interest level for crime currently being generated. It was constructed a modeling that can predict the crime by using traffic data of the Naver web search. There have been applied to Markov chains prediction theory. Among various crimes, murder, arson, rape, predictive modeling was applied to target. And the result of predictive modeling value was analyzed. As a result, it got the same results within 20%, based on the value of crime that actually occurred. In the future, it plan to advance research for the predictive modeling of crime that takes into the characteristics of the season.

  • A random chat application is a type of social dating application that helps people find a lover or spouse by randomly connecting and providing services such as text, voice and video chat. Recently, there has been globally a rapid increase in its use due to the fact that it provides people to quick and convenient encounters at low cost. However, it is used as one of method to prostitute or to trade drugs and become a cause of violent crimes due to various criminal occurring after actual meeting between app users. For this reason, a random chat application is likely to provide proof of prostitution or drug trade and clues to arrest rape, kidnapping and murder suspects. Thus, it is necessary to analyse random chat applications from the viewpoint of digital forensics investigation, but there is no related research at all. Therefore, in this paper, we analyzed artifacts of 6 Korea random chat application's user behaviors; Ranchat, AngTalk, SsumgThing, DaTalk, EveryTalk and Sail. As a result, we found that it is remain on mobile device that time and contents of message transmission/reception, sender/receiver, friend profile and user account creation time when user is using the applications.

  • The five major violent crimes including murder, robbery, rape·forced indecent act, theft, and violence are representative crimes that threaten the safety of members of society and occur frequently in real life. These crimes have negative effects such as lowering the quality of citizens' life. In the case of Seoul, the capital of Korea, the risk for the five major violent crimes is increasing because the population density of Seoul is increasing as a large number of people in the provinces move to Seoul. In this study, to reduce this risk, the relative risk for the occurrence of the five major violent crimes in Seoul is modeled using three spatio-temporal models. In addition, various risk factors are included to identify factors that significantly affect the relative risk of the five major violent crimes. The best model is selected in terms of the deviance information criterion, and the analysis results including various visualizations for the best model are provided. This study will help to establish efficient strategies to sustain people's safe everyday living by analyzing important risk factors affecting the risk of the five major violent crimes and the relative risk of each region.

  • News from the media on sexual assaults to children committed by natural fathers doesn't attract social attention any more. The number of crimes related to Child Sexual Assault(CSA) is increasing every year in spite of the "Special Act on Prevention of Sexual Assault in Korea". The YoungNam District Sunflower Center for prevention of Child Sexual Assaults(SC-CSA) was established in Daegu, June 2005. The YoungNam District SC-CSA provides forensic evaluation of physical evidence, medical and psychological treatment for the victims less than 13 years of sexual assaults simultaneously. This study carried out 36 cases of CSA by kin reported to YoungNam District SC-CSA, among 180 cases in total until December 2006 since its opening. Most of the victims were girls (32 cases). 28 cases (78%) were indecent assaults (78%) and 8 cases (22%) were rapes. The assailants were overwhelmingly males (35 cases). The assailants of 21 cases (58.3%) were identified as the victims' natural fathers. The incident locations were victim's residence (31 cases, 86.1%) and the victims had been sexually assaulted regularly for many years (25 cases, 69.4%). Considering the above research, we can conclude that CSA committed by kin has specific characteristics. CSA is not a one-time incident, but consistently occurring crime. However, in 22 cases (61.1%), the victim's guardian didn't want to report about it or punish the assailants. As the assailants were natural fathers or relatives of the victims, the other family members probably thought it might be shameful to reveal their wrong doings and would lead to defamation of their family's reputation. The SC-CSA provides the counseling and medical treatment to the victims with the consent of the parents. Due to the guardians' misjudgment, the incident is sometimes not reported to the police. By not reporting the incident to the police, the assailant freely commits other crimes, which multiplies victims. The legal Act of supporting the management of the SC-CSA is still not regulated, so the stability of the SC-CSA is not guaranteed, yet. Even though it is obligatory to report incidents to the police, some cases are still not reported. Currently, there are three SC-CSA centers : in Seoul, in Daegu, and in Gwangju. More centers need to be established to diminish CSA cases in Korea.

  • For the increase of grain yield potential in rice, a low-tillering large panicled type has been suggested as an ideotype. A low-tillering plant type may have different yield potential and needs different cultural practices from that used in a high-tillering type for the maximum yield. This study was conducted to evaluate the grain yield performances of a low-tillering large panicled rice and high-tillering small panicled rice at different plant spacings, nitrogen(N) levels and seedling numbers per hill. A low-tillering large panicled genotype, IR25588 was compared with a high-tillering small panicled IR58. The grain yield of IR25588 was significantly higher than that of IR58 under a narrow spacing with high N level. The maximum yields of IR58 and IR25588 were reached at about 35,000 and 40,000 spikelets per m$^2$, respectively. The increased grain yield in IR25588 was mainly due to the increase in spikelet number per unit area which is the most precise indicator of grain yield in rice. The optimum spacing for the maximum yield was denser for IR25588 than that for IR58 under high N level. The intra-hill competition of the low-tillering type was lower than that of the high-tillering type. The higher dry matter production and bigger leaf area and culm weight were the main factors for increased grain yield in a low-tillering panicle weight type. Based on the results, the yield potential of a low-tillering panicle weight type was higher than that of a high-tillering panicle number type, especially under a close spacing with high N level.

  • The morpho-anatomical characteristics of panicle in rice plant is generally correlated with the number of spikelets and grain weight per panicle. For the increase of grain yield potential in rice, a low -tillering plant type with large panicles has been suggested as an ideotype. This study was conducted to investigate the panicle morphology and peduncle anatomy of different tillers within a plant in low -and high-tillering cultivars and their relationships on the number of spikelets and grain weight per panicle. A low-tillering, large panicled IR25588 was compared with a high-tillering. small panicled IR58. IR25588 had more inner(IVB) and outer vascular bundles (OVB). bigger peduncle diameter and peduncle thickness just below the panicle neck node than IR58. The top six tillers(M. P1, P2, P3. P4 and S1P2) within a plant had more IVB and OVB. larger peduncle diameter and thickness than the rest of the tillers in both cultivars. Tillers that emerged earlier had more IVB and OVB than tillers that emerged Jater. The total number of primary and secondary rachis-branches of IR25588 was much higher than that of IR58. IR25588 had more number of spikelets per panicle than IR58. and the top six panicles showed more spikelets per panicle than the rest of the panicles in both cultivars. The peduncle diameter was more important than peduncle thickness on the spikelet differentiation and panicle weight. especially in low-tillering cultivars. The number of IVB and OVB were highly correlated with the number of rachis-branches. spikelets and grain weight per panicle. The number of spikelets per IVB and spikelets per primary branch were higher in IR25588 than IR58 indicating the higher sink strength in low -tillering with large panicled cultivars than in high-tillering with small panicled cultivars. Based on the morpho-anatomical characteristics of a low-tillering cultivar and the top six tillers within a plant. the present results could be support that 'a low-tillering sturdy culms with large panicles' is an ideo-type of rice plant for increasing grain yield potential.potential.

  • To determine the causes of and related factors to childhood injuries, the emergency room records and inpatient medical records were reviewed for 4,849 injured children out of 15,790 pediatric patients(<15 years old) who visited the emergency rooms of 3 university hospitals and 2 general hospitals in Taegu from 1 January to 31 December 1987. Out of total injured children, 54.675 were 3-8 years old and the male to female ratio of the total injured children was about 2:1. The leading causes of injury were falls and slips (29.1%) and traffic accident(28.2%). The frequency of injury was higher in May-October than the rest of months and 51.6% of the injuries occurred between 15 and 20 o'clock. Falls and slips took place most frequently at the stairway(25.7%). The most common interpersonal violence was inflicted injuries(85.6%) and there were 11 child rapes. Dog bites accounted for 67.6% of all biting injuries and it occured 2.9 times more in male than in female. CO intoxication was the most common cause of poisoning (45.3%) and scalding accounted for 85.2% of all burns. Common places of drownings were river (32.2%), swimming pool (22.6%) and construction site(19.3%). To prevent childhood injuries, it is recommended to eliminate the hazardous environmental factors, to provide safe playgrounds, to educate the children for safety from kindergarten and the general public through mass communication, to establish a strict safety standard for houses, public buildings and facilities, and playgrounds.

  • To estimate the factors to the inclination of the criminal violence, the content of trace minerals and toxic metals in the scalp hair were measured during the period from May 1992 to October 1992. One hundred eleven violent and 89 nonviolent criminal inmates of Taegu Correctional Institute were selected. The inmates of violent criminals were imprisoned by murder, robber, rape, injury and violent acts. Those of nonviolent criminals were swindle, larceny, and adultery and had no history of institutional violence. The contents of two toxic metals (cadmium, lead) and five trace minerals (Cu, Fe, Zn, Mg, Na) were determined by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (IL. 551). The contents of cadmium and lead in hair of violent criminals were significantly higher as $0.56{\pm}0.14ppm,\;11.53{\pm}3.32ppm$, respectively, than $0.42{\pm}0.20ppm,\;9.63{\pm}4.31ppm$ of nonviolent group (p<0.01). But the level of copper was significantly lower than nonviolent group (p<0.05). The factors that had a significant correlation with the inclination of violence in multiple logistic regression analysis were cadmium (odds ratio=98.09), unmarried (odds ratio=0.39), many times of criminal history(odds ratio=1.57) and residence of rural area (odds ratio=0.44). The results suggest that the sub-toxic contents of cadmium and lead in the hair may be of potential effect on behavior, and the mineral analysis may be an important adjunctive diagnostic procedure. Further studies into this problem are necessary.
