In the course of this study aimed at the development of functional food ingredients from seaweeds, the in vitro antimicrobial activities of methanol extracts prepared from 35 different seaweeds (17 phaeophyta, 11 rhodophyta and 7 chlorophyta) were determined against food-borne diseases and pathogenic microorganisms including multi-drug resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas sp. and Candida sp. Based on disc-diffusion assays at 500 g/disc concentration of the methanol extracts, Ishige okamurai, I. foliacea, Sargassum confusum, and S. yamade exhibited strong antibacterial activities in a broad-spectrum, except against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In addition to the latter four seaweeds, Ecklonia stolonifera, E. cava and Eisenia bicyclis also demonstrated antifungal activity against C. albicans. Among these 8 selected seaweeds, I. okamurai, I. foliacea, and S. yamade exhibited strong hemolytic activity (55-93%) at 500 g/ml against human RBC. Organic solvent sequential fractions using hexane, ethylacetate and butanol, and water residues were prepared from the 8 selected seaweeds and their anti-Candida sp. activities were further determined. The ethylacetate and butanol fraction of I. okamurai, and the hexane fraction of I. foliacea demonstrated antifungal activity against MDR-pathogenic Candida sp. Although the solvent fractions had no activity against MDR-Pseudomonas sp., our results suggest that seaweeds, especially Ishige okamurai, I. foliacea, S. confusum, and S. yamade could be developed as broad-spectrum antimicrobial ingredients.

We report non-specific immune responses and its disease resistance against Edwardsiella tarda by alga mixture (HE; Hizikia:Ecklonia) in olive flounder for the first time. Five isonitrogenous (44% crude protein) and isocaloric (17.1 MJ $kg^{-1}$) diets were formulated to have 0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% of the alga mixture. One of five experimental diets was fed triplicate groups of fish (30 fish/group) to apparent satiation in a flow through system. After a two week feeding, blood was sampled at 3, 6, 12, 24 h after the last feeding for a kinetic measurement of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) activity and healthy fish with similar sizes in each tank were selected and injected with 1 mL of E. tarda suspension ($1.0\times10^7$ CFU/mL) to evaluate the disease resistance of the fish. Dietary supplementation of alga mixtures resulted in significantly higher non-specific immune responses compared with the fish fed the control diet. The cumulative mortality was significantly lower in the fish groups fed alga mixture containing diets than control group in the challenge test with E. tarda. Therefore, the results in this study indicate that dietary supplementation of Hizikia and Ecklonia mixtures enhance the non-specific immune responses and a disease resistance of olive flounder.
In order to improve top shell seed production techniques spawning and larvae rearing were done in rearing tanks. Growth of young top shell in the nursing ground were also investigated. For induced spawning, top shells were maintained in still water during night time. Then they were treated with ultra violet iradiated sea water after dried up in air for 60 minutes. Spawning rate were 10 to $39.77\%$. It was found that young top shells moved in the growing grounds from nursing grounds when they reached approximately 30-40mm in shell heignt. Among main food algae for top shell in the natural growing grounds, sea mustard were melted away during June. Therefore, presence of another food algae such as Ecklonia cava or Sargassum spp. seems to be the main limiting factor for survival of top shell during summer. The tolerance of top shells ranging from 30mm to 60mm to low density of seawater for were tested at the temperature between 29.5 and $31.4^{\circ}C$. Hundred percent mortality occoured in 20, 55 and 90 hours after first stocking at the specific gravity of 1.010, 1.015, and 1.020, respectively.

Marine algal assemblages on the artificial reefs at three stations (Haengwon, Geumneung, Pyoseon in Jeju-do) and the growth pattern of Ecklonia cava with water depth were studied before and after rocky cleaning. Nine algal species occurred at three artificial reefs before rocky cleaning in July 2012, however, 19 algal species were found at three artificial reefs after rocky cleaning in July 2013. In particular, 13 of 19 species in 2013 were replaced by different species which were not found in July 2012. Algal biomass rapidly increased in July 2013 after rocky cleaning. The nMDS plot based on the presence and absence data of macro-algal assemblages on the artificial reefs showed that the species compositions between artificial reefs were similar to each other before rocky cleaning operations in July of 2012. However, after rocky cleaning, the species composition of macro-algal assemblages in Haengwon region was similar to that in Pyoseon region while that in Geumneung region was different to those in Haengwon and Pyseon regions in July 2013. It is needed to clarify the suitable water depth for transplantation of perennial Phaeophyta E. cava. According to the data on seasonal changes in total length, total weight, blade length, blade width, blade weight of E. cava, it began to grow rapidly from April and reached to the maximum value in June, and then degeneration of the blade occurred in July and continued to early August. Although the total length of E. cava at 10m water depth was larger than those at 5 m and 15 m water depths, there was no significant difference statistically among water depths by ANOVA test. However, in the values of total weight, blade length, blade width, and blade weight, the growth patterns at 5 m water depth were larger than those at 10 m and 15 m. Thus, it is assumed that the most suitable water depth for transplantation and its maximum growth and effective release of zoospores of E. cava will be 7~10 m water depth.
Objectives : Ecklonia cava is brown alga(Laminariaceae) which grows is sea, it has antioxidant, diarrhea and anticoagulant effect. In this study, the effect of ethanol extract of Ecklonia cava (EC) on peptidoglycan(PGN) -induced NO production in RAW 264.7 cells was investigated. Methods : In the present study, IL-6 production was measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), prostaglandin $\E_2$($\PGE_2$) production was measured using the EIA kit, and inducible NO synthase(iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2), and mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK) activation, as determined by western blot analysis and reverse transcription -polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). Results : EC inhibited PGN-induced NO and IL-6 production. Consistent with these observations, the protein expression of iNOS and COX-2 were inhibited by EC. Moreover, EC suppressed the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK) 1/2 in PGN-induced RAW 264.7. Conclusions : These results suggest that EC has inhibitory effects on PGN-induced $\PGE_2$, NO, and IL-6 production, as well as the expressions of iNOS and COX-2 in the murine macrophage. These inhibitory effects occur through blockades on the MAPKs phosphorylation.

As marine desertification and chlorosis in Korean coast have been intensified over time, Korean government is promoting marine afforestation projects. However, marine afforestation location is mainly decided by administrative convenience. Also, there is limited literature on location suitability about the marine afforestation. This study aims to assess location suitability of marine afforestation considering 3 significant criteria: ecological, submarine topographical, and human-social environment. Jeju, the study area of this study, first observed chlorosis in Korean coast at the small fishery town in Seogwipo. Jeju is currently suffering from chlorosis all around the island. Habitat Evaluation Procedure (HEP), 3D kriging, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied as analysis methods. Especially, 3D kriging is utilized for modeling 3D ocean space reflecting ocean environment appropriately. The result shows that Jocheon coast has better location suitability than Seogwipo Pyoseon coast. Jocheon coast has the maximum 61% suitability as the habitat of Ecklonia cava Kjellman, and is highly evaluated in other criteria. The results of this study are expected to find optimal marine afforestation location, and to contribute to the restoration of the Jeju coastal ecosystem and the revitalization of Jeju fishing village societies.
In this study, we investigated the effect of 88 marine algae extracts on melanin synthesis to develop new whitening agents. Among varieties of marine algae tested, the ethyl acetate extracts from Endarachne binghamiae (EB), Scytosiphon lomentaria, Sargassum yezoense, Ecklonia cava and Sargassum fusiforme inhibited melanin synthesis in melan-a cells. EB treatment showed the strongest inhibitory activity in melanin synthesis, compared with that of other extracts. EB-mediated inhibition of melanin synthesis appeared to be associated with inhibition of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase-dependent glycosylation of tyrosinase in melan-a cells. In addition, EB treatment did not affect mushroom tyrosinase or cell-extracted tyrosinase activity in vitro. Taken together, our findings suggest that anti-browning effect of EB on skin is mediated through regulation of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase activity and subsequent inhibition of tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis, and further development of EB as a potential agent for skin whitening.
This study aims to classify the biotope types based on the vegetation community in built-up areas by different land use and to map the plant communities. By classifying biotopes according to a taxonomic system, the characteristics of a biological community can be well-represented. The biotope classification indexes for the target area include human behavioral factors such as land use intensity, land-use patterns and land-cover types. The type classification was divided into four hierarchic ranks starting with Biotope Class, next by Biotope Group and Biotope Type and lastly by Biotope Sub-Type. The Biotope Class was first divided into two areas: the areas improved by humans and the areas unimproved by humans. The improved areas were again divided into permeable and non-permeable regions on the Biotope Group level. In the Biotope Type level, permeable paving areas were divided into areas with wide gap pavers and those with narrow gap pavers. The differential species of each biotope type are Lindera glauca, Conyza canadensis, Mazus pumilus, Vicia tetrasperma, Crepidiastrum sonchifolium, Zoysis japonica, Potentilla supina and Festuca arundinacea. The results of this study suggest that the biotope classification methodology, using a subjective phytosociological approach, is a useful and valuable tool and the results also suggest the possibility of applying more objective and scientific methods in mapping and classifying various environments.

As a rapid and quick bioactive compound evaluation technique, in this study we utilized a automatic system of High Throughput Screening (HTS) to investigate DPPH radical scavenging efficacy of seaweeds, collected from Jeju Island in Korea. In this study, 6 species of green seaweeds, 18 species of brown seaweeds and 22 species of red seaweeds extracted with methanol at $20^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$ were subjected to HTS. Of the green seaweeds tested, Enteromorpha compressa (20G6) of the green seaweeds showed DPPH radical scavenging activity of over 60%. On the other hand, the other green seaweeds showed poor DPPH radical scavenging activities (lees than 40%) at 1 mg/ml. Sargassum siliquastrum (20B17, 70B17), Dictyota dichotoma (70B1), Sargassum coreanum (70B16) and Ecklonia cava (70B26) among the brown seaweeds showed significantly high DPPH radical scavenging activity with 96%, 97%, 92%, 92%, 87%. Polysiphonia japonica (20R24), Schizymenia dubyi (20R17), Gelidium amansii (20R18) and Acrosorium flabellatum (20R23) among the red seaweeds showed remarkable DPPH radical scavenging activity of over 90%.

In previous reports the authors have screened the inhibition effects of marine algae extracts on halitosis, and demonstrated that a brown algae, Eisenia bicyclis (' Daehwang') possess not only strong deodorant effect bug also considerable anticariogenic activities. In this study, we screened antibacterial effects of various marine algae, and measured minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of them against mutans streptococci in vitro. Among the 27 species of marine algae, $80\%$ ethanol extract of dried sea-mustard, Laminaria japonica ('Dasima') showed the strongest inhibition activity against Streptococcus mutans KCTC 3300. The extracts of Ulva lactuca ('Galparae'), Codium fragile ('Cheonggak'), Ecklonia cava ('Gamtae'), E. stolonifera ('Gompi') and Undalia Pinnatifida ('Miyeok') showed slightly weaker inhibitory potency than L. japonica. Differences of MIC values in $80\%$ ethanol extract of some species of marine algae were observed depending on test bacterial species, i.e., S. mutans KCTC 3300 or S. sobrinus KCTC 3307. Eighty percent ethanol extract of dried L japonica was fractionated with diethyl ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-buthanol and water successively, The ether-soluble fraction had inhibitory effect on S. mutans KCTC 3300, however the inhibitory effects were not found in the other fractions. The MIC values of $80\%$ ethanol extract and ether fraction were 180 and 105 $\mu$g/mL respectively, while no significant inhibition activity of water-soluble fraction was found even when the fraction was added up to 5,500 $\mu$g/mL.
