  • This study was conducted to develop a simulation-based education program for respiratory infectious disease and to identify the effects of clinical competency, self-leadership and critical thinking after applying to nursing students. A non-equivalent pre-post test of quasi-experimental design was used. The study subjects were 30 students for the experimental group and 30 for the control group. Respiratory infectious disease simulation-based education was provided for 5 weeks. Data analysis was performed using SPSS WIN Ver 21.0 with Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. Clinical competency, self-leadership, and critical thinking of the experimental group showed statistically significant differences in comparison with the control group. These study results proved that a simulation-based education program for respiratory infectious disease is effective in raising nursing students' clinical competency, self-leadership and critical thinking. Therefore, it is considered that simulation-based education should be provided to cultivate nursing problem-solving clinical competency, self-leadership or critical thinking by developing a scenario based on various clinical situations.

  • This study investigated to provide basic data for infection control education on new infectious diseases by confirming the level of knowledge, training status, stress, and need for training on new infectious diseases for 119 emergency medical technicians (EMT). This data collection period was a total of 39 days from August 10 to September 18, 2022, and a total of 105 copies were collected. The analysis of this study used the SPSS 25.0 program. As a result of the study, among the 119 paramedics, the gender of the EMT was 54 men (51.4%) and 51 women (48.6%), with more men than women, with 47 people in their 20s (44.8%) and those in their 30s or older. There were 58 people (55.2%), most of whom were in their 30s or older. The highest total work experience was 3 to 5 years (37 people (35.2%)). In the pandemic situation, an attempt was made to check the education status of 119 paramedics on COVID-19 and the need for education on new infectious diseases. As a result of the study, the status of education on COVID-19 was insufficient. The demand for education on new infectious diseases was found to be high. Among 119 emergency responders who are frequently exposed to new infectious diseases, theoretical and practical training in personal protective equipment, stress, including theoretical training, is needed. A theoretical and practical education program on new infectious diseases and personal protective equipment should be developed as a subject for college students before becoming EMT.

  • Although the need for education on sexually-transmitted-infections (STIs) for adolescents has been increasing, a limited number of adolescents receive STI education. Importantly, the exposure of youth to an STI during their adolescence period can seriously affect their genital health. Smartphones are an innovative medium that can be used to change individual behaviors, especially useful when used to educate adolescents. Therefore, we developed a customized smartphone application for Korean adolescents. The application was based on Dick and Carey's instructional system design model. In this paper, we describe the process for development of the smartphone application, and the strategies we applied to attract adolescents to use the smartphone application. Six experts verified the educational content of the application. The application's easygoing words were chosen to help adolescents understand the topic. Strategies such as cartoon clips, secret chat rooms, buttons changing color from blue to grey, questions and answers, and a repeated-learning function were used to attract Korean adolescents to the application. The smartphone application developed in this study could be used in schools, youth centers, and hospital centers to improve STI knowledge, STI prevention, and STI coping skills.

  • Purpose: To identify the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) outbreaks depending on the type of educational facility by analyzing the COVID-19 cluster associated with educational facilities. Methods: This study is based on epidemiological investigation of COVID-19 cluster in Gangwon-do, Korea from December 10, 2020 to September 23, 2021 reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Integrated Disease and Health Management System. Four hundred seven patients in 19 facilities, classified as cluster related to educational facilities, were the study population. The result of preliminary epidemiology survey report, in-depth epidemiological survey by phone and the result of risk assessment derived from the field epidemiology investigation were retrospectively analyzed to evaluate infectivity and the characteristics of the risk factors. Results: There were total of 407 confirmed patients related to 19 educational facilities, with 204 students under the age of 19 (50.1%). One hundred fifty-five preceding spreaders were from families (38.1%) and 125 were the teachers (30.7%). The place exposed to confirmed patients was the highest with 139 people (34.2%) at home. Conclusions: It was confirmed that the cause of the occurrence of clusters related to educational facilities was higher due to family transmission than the risk of facilities in schools. Nevertheless, continuous efforts should be made to control infection in educational facilities, and that teachers' implementation of principles for prevention of COVID-19 personal hygiene in their daily lives should be strengthened.
