  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop a Core Competency Scale for clinical nursing student educators. Methods: In this study, we constructed a conceptual framework, selected initial items, verified the content validity, conducted two rounds of Delphi expert consultation, selected secondary and tertiary items, and extracted the final items. The study included 242 clinical educators for nursing students. Item analysis, factor analysis, criterion validity, and internal consistency were used for the data analyses. Results: For the final scale, 35 items were selected and 5 factors were categorized, which together explain 61.7% of the total variance. The factors were education and evaluation, research and cooperation, ethical/legal principles, presenting leadership, and clinical practice. The scores for the scale significantly correlated with the teaching efficacy scale for clinical nursing instructors. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 35 items was .96. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that the core competency scale has good validity and reliability. This scale can be used to assess the competency of clinical educators for nursing students; hence, it will help in evaluating the relationship between the skills of clinical educators for nursing students and the self-efficacy of those students.

  • Purpose: This study explores the moral distress that nursing students experience during their clinical practice in Korea. Methods: Data were collected using focus group interviews, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Participants were recruited from three nursing schools in three different cities; each focus group interview lasted between one to two hours. Results: Twenty-two nursing students with more than one year of clinical practice experience participated. Three categories and ten themes were extracted. The following situational categories: "unprotected patients' right and dignity," "clinical settings in which standards of care are not upheld," "disrespectful hospital culture," and "inconsistent and unsystematic clinical education" caused moral distress. Types of responses to moral distress included: "shock and confusion over the gap between reality and moral standards," "powerlessness when cannot advocate patients," "fear and doubts about nursing career," and "moral desensitization and disappointment in oneself." "Expressions of moral distress and the need for advice" and "a search for meaning and hope" were identified as coping strategies. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the need for systematic clinical practicum and education programs to minimize moral distress. These programs may offer opportunities for students to turn moral distress into opportunities for learning and growth in the future.

Method: Data were collected using a survey by mail from July to November 2004 using a structured questionnaire on the general state of clinical practicum for adult health nursing. The questionnaires were sent to 53 nursing colleges throughout the country, and 47 recovered questionnaires were analyzed. Results: The number of credits for adult health nursing practicum was 7~10(average range), and various nursing fields were used in clinical practicum. The number of students per team was 5~6 at general wards and 3~4 at intensive care units. Students also experienced practicum during daytime and in the evening. Clinical practicum for adult health nursing was led by full-time professors and field practicum directors. In clinical practicum for adult health nursing, almost every college evaluated students' attitude, skills, leadership, etc. in various forms. • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the educational effect among nursing students who performed the patient role in women's health nursing simulations. Methods: In this exploratory qualitative study, a sample of 31 third- and fourth-grade nursing students who participated in scenario-based patient roles in clinical performance examination of the women's health nursing simulation practice training. Data were collected through focus group interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Three themes emerged from the data analysis. Participants experienced an enhancement of patient-centered nursing competence, deep learning immersion and display of self-regulated learning. The difficulty of performing the patient role contributed additional effects such as the difficulty to perform the patient role in the psychological training environment. Conclusion: It is recommended to utilize nursing students as patients in simulation practice training. On the other hand, the psychological training environment can cause difficulties in performing patient roles, a burden on the role of the patient, and involves the interruption of the role.

A cause of the development of the Information Technology, currently in the view point of system management, the hospital works is manage by the HIS(Hospital Information System). The teaching of the computer application capability for the information in science of nursing must not be the one-way by supplier like one of the survey courses but must be adapted at real condition and to be focused to learner. Thus, we suggest that the education of the science of nursing should be changed from one of the survey courses to the education of the acquirement and experience on information system knowledge.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effects of clinical practice in school on clinical competence in nurse. Method: This study used a quasi experimental post-test design. Data were collected after post-test from April 1, 2005 to May 30, 2005 and from 73 clinical nurses(53 experimental group, 20 control group) who work for 4 General hospitals. Data were analyzed using SPSSWIN 11.5 with $X^2$-test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and stepwise multiple regression. The experimental group participated in treatment : 4-week consecutive clinical nursing education with preceptor in schooling, and the control group participated in treatment : traditional clinical nursing education with preceptor in schooling. Results: Clinical competence were significantly different between experimental and control groups(t=3.221, p=.002). Clinical competence in nurse is effected by satisfaction of clinical practice in schooling in experimental group(F=14.781, p=.000). Conclusion: 4-week consecutive clinical nursing education with preceptor has an effect on clinical competence in nurse. Therefore we should spread and reinforce the 4-week consecutive clinical nursing education program for improving clinical competence of nurse.

  • Purpose: This study focused on two aspects: 1) how to design and implement a mobile learning course which is facilitated by a PDA with a web-based class homepage as a tool for mobile learning; 2) how to increase and enhance interactive activities among and between the students and the faculty members by utilizing a PDA as a tool for communication as well as collaboration. Method: To analyze the results of the m-Learning course, data was collected from interviews with the involved two faculty members and a survey from 27 students. Result: The results showed a positive outcome of the m-Learning approach in terms of a more collaborative learning environment in a clinical course where the students practice their clinical activities out of the classroom, far from their faculty members. On the other hand, the problems of the m-Learning approach were that more thorough preparation was needed for the new tools from both the students and the faculty members in preparation in social, cultural, and mental aspects, not withstanding the assumed technical limits of a PDA. Conclusion: m-Learning must be more actively implemented in classes, even though several problems were noticed in terms of both technical aspects of the tools, and social and cultural aspects from the users.

  • In order to help students through their initial clinical experience, faculty must understand more fully the moaning of this experience for nursing students. This study was performed to understand and to explain what is the essential structure of nursing students' initial clinical experience. A grounded theory approach was conducted to explore the actual experience of nursing students' first clinical experience. Each of the nursing students' descriptions about their initial clinical experience was analyzed using Strauss & Corbin's method. The results of the study were as follows : From the 172 written descriptions and 7 in-depth individual interviews, 128 concepts were extracted. After identifying the concepts' formulated meaning, they were organized into 29 subcategories and the following 12 categories . burden, encountering difficulties, self-discovery, grasping actuality, acquirement of nurse's nature, special character of experience, special character of relationship, external effect, problem oriented coping, emotional oriented coping, affection for nursing, skeptical view of nursing. Five hypotheses were derived from the analysis. 1) Burden is an obstacle to grasp nursing actuality. 2) Special character of experience and external effect have an effect on grasping nursing actuality, 3) Encouragement, a part of external effects, will increase nursing student's affection for nursing. 4) Affection for nursing through first clinical experience facilitates positive nursing view and scholarly zest. 5) Disappointment with the difference be tween theory and reality will cause the student to take a skeptical view of nursing. It is hoped that the knowledge gained from this qualitative study will enable faculty to enter more fully Into the world of nursing students as they embark on their initial clinical experience.
