  • The goal of this study was to examine the relationship among students' personal variables(Korean language abilities, self-efficacy, student-teacher attachment relationships), teacher variable(perceptions of multi-cultural education) affecting on multi-cultural students' school adjustment. Structural equation modeling was performed to test the mediating role of self-efficacy and student-teacher attachment affecting multi-cultural students' school adjustment. 336 elementary students and their matching 264 elementary school teachers were participated for this study. The model fit for this study model was acceptable, =280.024, df=98, CFI=.930, RMSEA = .074. The results revealed that teacher's perceptions on multi-cultural education significantly related with student-teacher relationships. However, Korean language ability did not directly affect the school adjustment for multi-cultural background students. That is, self-efficacy and student-teacher relationships mediated between Korean language ability and school adjustment. Moreover student-teacher relationships seem to be the key mediating factor between other research variables and school adjustment. Further considerations and future directions based on results were discussed.

  • High school credit system refers to a system in which a student selects the desired content according to his/her subject and completes accumulated credits to reach graduation when a certain standard is reached. The purpose of this study is to identify the advantages and disadvantages to the technology and home economics education after the introduction of the high school credit system by analyzing the status of high school elective subjects in technology and home economics areas, and the perceptions and needs of teachers and experts as the introduction of the high school credit system approaches. A survey was conducted to all professors in the Department of Home Economics Education or Technology Education, along with a national sample of the secondary school teachers of Home Economics and Technology, and responses of 282 teachers and 36 experts were analyzed. Results are as follows: First, in general high schools, the formation and operation of elective courses in technical and home economics were very insufficient. Second, there was a large number of requests for the expansion of elective courses in technology and home economics among the high school teachers. Third, in order to take advantage of the high school credit system, it was recognized that elective courses in technology and home economics should be established not only in consideration of secondary school education, but in relation to their connections with majors in universities. Improving the structure of electives in this direction is expected to play a positive role in allowing elective courses in technology and home economics to contribute to ensuring students' free choice.

Major findings were as follows. First, home economics teachers perceived that the critical consumer education perspective is more important, but in practice, they mostly used the traditional consumer education perspective. Second, according to their perception on the consumer education teaching method, the critical perspective was considered more significant and was more frequently used than the traditional perspective. However, the home economics teachers held an ambivalent perspective on the areas of purpose of consumer education, consumer education knowledge, consumer, and consumer society. Accordingly, they used both perspectives in practice for those areas. Finally, the teachers' degree in home economics education and the perspective on the home economics curriculum were found to be the two important factors that determine the teachers' consumer education paradigm.

Fourthly, regarding the family value and the needs on teaming objectives of family life area of middle school Home Economics teachers, those who were female, who had certificates for Home Economics Teaching, who were young and who had less experiences in teaching had more modem family value and required more teaming objectives in emancipatory system of action. Considering the results of the study, it is needed to emphasize the learning objects of emancipatory system of action in family life education by inducing consensus on the proposition that Home Economics subject is a critical and practical subject. To do this. it is needed to provide Home Economics teachers with emancipatory interest and mature family value through educating and refreshing them. It is desirable to separate Technology and Home Economics so that certificated Home Economics teachers could teach family life area. In that case they can teach the subject in the point of practical criticism. If the area is to be taught by other subject teachers there should be enough understanding on the philosophy and nature of Home Economics subject beforehand.

  • This study aimed at analyzing the educational needs of home economics teachers for food literacy cultivation education in secondary school home economics. A total of 192 home economics teachers were surveyed about their perceptions of importance and performance of food literacy education content categories and elements, and their priorities were identified. Among the 38 content elements presented, home economics teachers recognized that the current performance level was significantly lower than that of the importance over 34 content elements. Based on the Borich educational needs assessment and the Locus for Focus Model, we identified five content elements with 'very high' educational needs ('food security/food sovereignty', 'reducing food-related waste', 'food waste management and recycling', 'food-related waste recycling', and 'country of origin information'), and four content elements with 'high' educational needs ('genetically modified food', 'ethical food consumption', 'food additives', and 'eco-friendly agricultural products'). These results indicate that dietary education in secondary school home economics should emphasize both the production and disposal of food. The findings of this study suggest implications for the needs for a new dietary education in secondary school home economics that allows students to learn all stages of food system. These results can also be used as a basis for dietary education for cultivating food literacy in secondary school home economics education.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a 'Competency Model for Beginning Teachers in Home Economics'. The study was conducted in a total of 4 stages(preparation of competency model development stage, materialization stage, validity verification stage, and competency diagnosis stage), and the results of the study were as follows. First, the first tentative competency model was derived through the literature study, and the secondary tentative competency model was derived through an FGI. The validity of the secondary tentative competency model was verified by 15 experts and the competency groups, competencies, and competency definitions from this study were found to have content validity. Second, the competency diagnosis was conducted for a total of 222 beginning teachers in Home Economics. As a result, a total of 7 competencies were derived as the 'top priority competencies' that are of first priority for beginner teachers in Home Economics. The final competency model which was developed by reflecting the research results, was composed of 4 competency groups and 22 competencies and 22 competency definitions. The competencies of each competency group were presented in the order that beginning teachers thought were important. This study is meaningful in that it used an FGI and competency diagnosis to identify beginning teachers' perceptions and demands of the competencies and reflect the results on the competency model development.
