  • Terminalia chebula Retz., which was showed antimicrobial activity against intestinal pathogens through screening herbs related treatments of intestinal diseases, were extracted by methanol and fractionated by n-hexane, ethylether, ethylacetate, and water. Antimicrobial activities of the methanol extract and each fractionates were then investigated under the anaerobic broth system. The methanol extract showed antimicrobial activity against all intestinal pathogens(Eubacterium limosum ATCC 10825, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus KFCC 11764 hardly grew at 2,000$\mu$g/ml of concentration. Especially, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus KFCC 11764 hardly grew at 2,000$\mu$g/ml of concentration. There is no significant difference of antimicrobial activity among each fractionates. Fraction of Terminaliz chebula Retz. ethylacetate fractionate, which were fractionated by Sephadex G-200 and Silica gel column chromatography revealed the strongest antimicrobial activity at 12 to 21 and 22 to 34 of fraction number, respectively.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of water, extract of Terminalia Chebula (TC) on physiological activity in mice. TC water extract showed hemagglutination against several different types of red blood cells. $LD_{50}$ of TC extract was 390 mg/kg (po). Treatment of TC water extract orally administered 200, 300 mg/kg daily for one week. Hepatic cytosolic enzymes, xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase activities were significantly increased comparison with normal group. Treatment of TC water extract increased hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) formation, and reduced glutathione content. We also found that the decreased activities of glutathione S-transferase and glutathione reductase but was not affected activities of $\gamma$-glutamylcysteine synthetase after treatment of TC water extract. These results suggested that increase of the hepatic lipid peroxide is caused by glutathione reduction.

  • Antibacterial activities of water and 70% ethanol extracts of Terminalia chebula Retz were investigated. Fractions were prepared by step-wise fractionation of water and 70% ethanol extracts using acetone, hexane, chloroform and butanol. Butanol fraction showed best antibacterial activities. Water and 70% ethanol extracts of T. chebula Retz. had significantly high pyrogallol content among 13 phenolic compound analysed by HPLC, and pyrogallol (standard) showed highest activities against several food spoilage microorganism.
