An Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is a small gas turbine engine that is mounted on an aircraft and serves to supply energy for ground and air starting of the main engine. APU also supplies emergency and auxiliary power for the aircraft. APU for aircraft is simple and compact in structure, but because it is mounted on manned aircraft, high reliability is required, so it must be proved its reliability through qualification procedure. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute and Hanwha Techwin successfully completed the design / analysis, fabrication, assembly, development test and certification test of APU for helicopter based on accumulated domestic R & D capability and experience from 2007 to 2012. In this paper, the development and certification process of auxiliary power unit for helicopter is summarized.

Experimental verification in the rig test stage for component development is a vital link between the aeromechanical design and structural integrity validation process. Based on this premise, Non-Intrusive Stress Measuring System was adopted on the axial compressor test rig to measure the static and dynamic tip deflection of all blades by using tip-timing sensors. Through analyzing vibration characteristics, we evaluated the vibratory stresses seen on the blades fatigue critical location; detected synchronous resonances which are the source of High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) in blades; presented non-synchronous vibration response by aerodynamic excitation and individual blade mis-tuning patterns.
The large scale decisive battle will be gradually reduced on the sea in the future and surface combatant ship installed advanced weapon units as well as propulsion system will be continuously increased. The high level of military technology leads to appear state-of-the-art weapon system using high power energy. As a results, fossil fuel powered main prime mover as diesel engine and gas turbine which are composed of mechanical propulsion system should be decreased from combatant ship in the near future. The new building naval combatant ship with the latest technology has electric based propulsion method of the hybrid type combined with mechanical and electrical drive. U.S. and Royal Navy, especially, select the integrated fully electric based propulsion system for the next generation combat ship and play an important roll for developing them. In this context, this paper was focused on the deduction of implications through analyzing the combatant ship propulsion system using diesel and gas turbine engine which are promoted on the worldwide.

MDO Optimization for a low pressure axial compressor rotor has been carried out to improve aerodynamic performance and structural stability. Global optimized solution was obtained from an artificial neural network model with genetic algorithm. Optimized rotor model has a high blade loading near hub and near zero incidence flow angle near tip region to reduce the incidence loss and flow separation at trailing edge region. Also the rotor shape is converged to a trapezoid shape to reduce the maximum stress occurred at the root of the blade. Numerical simulation results show that rotor has 87.6% rotor efficiency and safety factor over than 3.
Electric propulsion aircraft are being actively researched in the aviation field in recent years to solve environmental and noise problems caused by existing gas turbine engine. In particular, research on a thrust motor as a core component of an electric power propulsion system and an inverter for driving it is actively being conducted. In this paper, a motor with high specific power is selected to determine characteristics of aircraft that are sensitive to weight and volume. Power loss of the inverter is then simulated. In the simulation, the selected motor and power device were modeled using PSIM, a power electronics analysis tool. Inverter power loss according to switching frequency was then analyzed.

Dynamic pressure sensor used in liquid rocket engine combustor and gas turbine is recess-mounted usually because it should work in high temperature environment. Although recess-mounted method can protect it from combustion gas in high temperature, tube resonance occurs in a tube-cavity system. To reduce it, the infinite tube probe(ITP) was introduced in this study. The ITP model suggested in previous literature was validated with experimental data and frequency response characteristics were analyzed. Guidelines for designing the ITP were suggested as frequency response profiles varied with geometric information and physical properties using this model.

This paper studied the high-velocity impact behavior characteristics of metal materials by crosschecking the high-velocity impact analysis with the high-velocity impact experiment results of aluminul 6061. The coefficients of the Huh-Kang material model and the Johnson-Cook fracture model were calculated through quasi-static using MTS-810 and dynamic experimenting using the Hopkinson bar equipment for high-velocity impact analysis. The penetration velocity and shape were predicted through high-velocity impact analysis using the LS-DYNA. The resultes were compared with the experiment results using a high-velocit experiment equipment. It is intended to be used the containment evaluation research for aircraft gas turbine engine blade.

In order to estimate the gas turbine engine performance precisely, the component maps containing their own performance characteristics should be needed. In this study a component map generation method which may identify compressor map conversely from a performance deck provided by engine manufacturer using genetic algorithms was newly proposed. As a demonstration example for this study, the PW 206C turbo shaft engine for the tilt rotor type Smart UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). In ordo to verify the proposed method, steady-state performance analysis results using the newly generated compressor map was compared with them performed by EEPP(Estimated Engine Performance Program) deck provided by engine manufacturer. And also the performance results using the identified maps were compared with them using the traditional scaling method. In this investigation, it was found that the newly proposed map generation method would be more effective than the traditional scaling method.

Recently, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Korea) and CIAM(Central Institute of Aviation Motors, Russia) have made an effort in developing a centrifugal compressor for a small gas turbine engine as part of a collaboration program. This compressor has been designed as a sub-component for an axial-centrifugal compression system for a small turbo-shaft engine aiming adiabatic efficiency higher than 0.81. The geometrical design requirement imposes restrictions to have high inlet hub-to-tip ratio and inlet swirl flow. In this study, the compressor has been designed using the generalized experimental data established from those compressors having pressure ratio of 3.7 to 5. From this generalized empirical correlation, desirable values of design parameters could be obtained. Subsequently, quasi-3D and 3D viscous flow analyses have been performed to ensure the adopted methodology. It is expected that the centrifugal compressor provides total pressure ratio of 4.89, corrected mass flow-rate of 1.64kg/sec, and adiabatic efficiency of 0.815 with inlet hub-to-tip ratio of 0.641. These relatively high total pressure ratio and inlet hub-to-tip ratio are the main distinctive features in this design. Besides, one of the main features of this centrifugal compressor is the adoption of a double-row bladed diffuser to effectively decelerate the transonic flow leaving the impeller. The compressor has been manufactured and will be tested in the near future.

Spray characteristics of liquid jets in crossflow, which can be observed in the liquid jet injection system of a gas turbine or ramjet engine, were experimentally investigated. By measuring liquid jet penetration in the case of single orifice and double orifice injectors, the experimental formula for jet penetration was modified to consider penetration distances greater than that considered in a previous study. The changes in spray characteristics resulting from changes in the liquid jet and crossflow pressure, including SMD and jet disintegration, were carefully studied. Specifically, the jet penetration was measured for different injector shapes, and in the case of a double orifice injector, the penetration of the rear orifice jet was found to be greater by approximately 20% ($L_h$ = 4 mm) compared to that in the case of a single orifice injector because of the influence of the front orifice.
