  • Consideration on the explosion resistant design of infrastructure has increased in the recent years. The explosion load is caused by gas explosion or bomb blast. In this study an analytical model is developed, whereby the tunnel structure is divided in several elements that are schematized as single degree of freedom mass-spring-dashpot systems on gas explosion. Using this simple model a sensitivity analysis has been carried out on tunnel structure design parameters such as explosive peak pressure, duration of the load, thickness of structure, burial depth. Finite element method was used to investigate the dynamic response and plastic zone of a tunnel under gas explosion. And it was found from the comparison of the analysis results that there are slight differences in the response of the intermediate wall between the single degree of freedom mass-spring-dashpot model and FEM.

  • Offshore structures for the gas production are exposed to the risk of gas leaks, and gas explosions can result in fatal damages to the primary structures as well as secondary structures. To minimize the damage from the critical accidents, the study of the dynamic response of structural members subjected to blast loads must be conducted. Furthermore, structural dynamic analysis has to be performed considering relationships between the natural frequency of structural members and time duration of the explosion loading because the explosion pressure tends to increase and dissipate within an extremely short time. In this paper, the numerical model based on time history data were proposed considering the negative phase pressure in which considerable negative phase pressures were observed in CFD analyses of gas explosions. The undamped single degree of freedom(SDOF) model was used to characterize the dynamic response under the blast loading. A blast wall of FPSO topside was considered as an essential structure in which the wall prevents explosion pressures from the process area to utility and working areas. From linear/nonlinear transient analyses using LS-DYNA, it was observed that dynamic responses of structures were influenced by significantly the negative time duration.

  • When a extreme loading such as blast is applied to prestressed concrete (PSC) structures and infrastructures for an instantaneous time, serious property damages and human casualties occur. However, a existing design procedure for PSC structures such as prestressed containment vessel (PCCV) and gas storage tank do not consider a protective design for extreme internal blast scenario. Particularly, an internal blast is much more dangerous than that of external blast. Therefore, verification of the internal blast loading is required. In this paper, the internal blast resistance capacity of PSC member is evaluated by performing internal blast tests on RC and bi-directional PSC scaled down specimens. The applied internal blast loads were 22.68, 27.22, and 31.75 kg (50, 60, and 70 lbs) ANFO explosive charge at 1,000 mm standoff distance. The data acquisitions include blast pressure, deflection, strain, crack patterns, and prestressing force. The test results showed that it is possible to predict the damage area to the structure when internal blast loading occurs in PCCV structures.

  • As a gas explosion is the most fatal accident in shipbuilding and offshore plant industries, all safety critical elements on the topside of offshore platforms should retain their integrity against blast pressure. Even though many efforts have been devoted to develop blast-resistant design methods in the offshore engineering field, there still remain several issues needed to be carefully investigated. From a procedure for calculation of explosion design pressure, impulse of a design pressure model having completely positive side only is determined by the absolute area of each obtained transient pressure response through the CFD analysis. The negative pressure phase in a general gas explosion, however, is often quite considerable unlike gaseous detonation or TNT explosion. The main objective of this study is to thoroughly examine the effect of the negative pressure phase on structural behavior. A blast wall for specific FPSO topside is selected to analyze structural response under the blast pressure. Because the blast wall is considered an essential structure for blast-resistant design. Pressure time history data were obtained by explosion simulations using FLACS, and the nonlinear transient finite element analyses were performed using LS-DYNA.

  • The gas explosions in offshore installations are known to be very severe according to its geometry and environmental conditions such as leak locations and wind directions, and a dynamic response of structures due to blast loads depends on the load profile. Therefore, a parametric study has to be conducted to investigate the effects of the dynamic response of structural members subjected to various types of load shapes. To do so, a series of CFD analyses was performed using a full-scale FPSO topside model including detail parts of pipes and equipments, and the time history data of the blast loads at monitor points and panels were obtained by the analyses. In this paper, we focus on a structural dynamic response subjected to blast loads changing the magnitude of positive/negative phase pressure and time duration. From the results of linear/nonlinear transient analyses using single degree of freedom(SDOF) and multi-degree-of freedom(MDOF) systems, it was observed that dynamic responses of structures were significantly influenced by the magnitude of positive and negative phase pressures and negative time duration.

  • Frequent terror or military attack by explosion, impact, fire accidents have occurred recently. These attacks and incidents raised public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks on important infrastructures. However, structural behavioral researches on prestressed concrete (PSC) infrastructures such as Prestressed Concrete Containment Vessel (PCCV) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage tanks under extreme loading are significantly lacking at this time. Also, researches on possible secondary fire scenarios after terror and bomb explosion has not been performed yet. Therefore, a study on PSC structural behavior from an blast-induced fire scenario was undertaken. To evaluate the blast-fire combined resistance capacity and its protective performance of bi-directional unbonded PSC member, blast-fire tests were carried out on $1,400mm{\times}1,000mm{\times}300mm$ PSC specimens. Blast loading tests were performed by the detonation of 25 kg ANFO explosive charge at 1.0 m standoff distance. Also, fire and blast-fire combined loading were tested using RABT fire loading curve. The test results are discussed in detail in the paper. The results can be used as basic research references for related research areas, which include protective design simulation under blast-fire combined loading.

  • In recent years, frequent terror or military attack by explosion, impact, fire accidents have occurred. Particularly, World Trade Center collapse and US Department of Defense Pentagon attack on Sept. 11 of 2001. Also, nuclear power plant incident on Mar. 11 of 2011. These attacks and incidents were raised public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks on major infrastructures and structures. Therefore, the extreme loading researches were performed of prestressed concrete (PSC) member, which widely used for nuclear containment vessel and gas tank. In this paper, to evaluate the blast resistance capacity and its protective performance of bi-directional unbonded prestressed concrete member, blast tests were carried out on $1,400{\times}1,000{\times}300mm$ for reinforced concrete (RC), prestressed concrete without rebar (PSC), prestressed concrete with rebar (PSRC) specimens. The applied blast load was generated by the detonation of 55 lbs ANFO explosive charge at 1.0 m standoff distance. The data acquisitions not only included blast waves of incident pressure, reflected pressure, and impulse, but also included displacement, acceleration, and strains at steel, concrete, PS tendon. The results can be used as basic research references for related research areas, which include protective design and blast simulation under blast loading.

  • In this study, the shock resistance of a gas turbine package subjected to a shock load caused by non-contact underwater explosion was investigated using numerical analysis. To perform shock analysis, the time-history shock load was calculated according to BV-043 (German Navy Regulation). The direct transient response analysis in the time domain for the simplified Whole Engine Model (WEM) was performed using the calculated shock load. In addition, the structural integrity of a detailed model was evaluated by considering the shock load transferred to each component. As a result, it was confirmed that the safety factor was at least 1.0 as compared with the reference stress. Finally, the structural and functional integrity of the Engine Management System (EMS) of the gas turbine package was verified through an actual shock test.
