  • Recently, Performance and fuel efficiency of gasoline engines have been improved by adopting direct injection (DI) system instead of port fuel injection (PFI) system. However, injecting gasoline fuel directly into the cylinder significantly reduces the time available for mixing and evaporation. Consequently, particulate matters(PM) emissions increase. Moreover, as the emission regulations are getting more stringent, not only the mass but also the total number of PM should be reduced to satisfy the Euro VI regulations. Increasing the fuel injection pressure is one of the methods to meet this challenge. In this study, the effects of increased fuel injection pressures on combustion and emission characteristics were experimentally examined at several part load conditions in a 1.6 liter commercial gasoline direct injection engine. The main combustion durations decreased about $2{\sim}3^{\circ}$ in crank angle base by increasing the fuel injection pressure due to enhanced air-fuel mixing characteristics. The exhaust emissions and number concentration distributions of PM with particle sizes were also compared. Due to enhanced combustion characteristics, THC emissions decreased, whereas NOx emissions increased. Also, the number concentrations of PM, larger than 10 nm, also significantly decreased.

  • In-cylinder spray flow motion plays an important in the adjustment of mixture preparation with a fundamental spray characteristics and in-cylinder flow field well in direct-injection gasoline engine. In this study, the fundamental spray characteristics such as mean drop size, velocity distribution, spray angle were measured and in-cylinder spray flow motion was visualized in order to optimize intake port, piston top land and combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass-produced G야 engine. For these experiments, the PDPA measurements and Mie scattering technique were used for detailed spray characteristics and in-cylinder spray motions were obtained by use of ICCD camera through the single-cylinder optical engine. From the experimental results, the test injector shows a good low-end linearity between the dynamic flow and fuel injection pulse width and the fuel spray of 20mm or less in SMD with good spray symmetry. In addition, the in-cylinder tumble flow has more effect on the homogeneous mixture formation than that of in-cylinder swirl flow at early injection mode and the in-cylinder swirl flow plays a better role of stratified mixture preparation than tumble flow at late injection mode.

  • Recently, because of the increased oil prices globally, there have been studies investigating the improvement of fuel-conversion efficiency in internal combustion engines. The improvements realized in thermal efficiency using lean combustion are essential because they enable us to realize higher thermal efficiency in gasoline engines because lean combustion leads to an increase in the heat-capacity ratio and a reduction of the combustion temperature. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines enable lean combustion by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder and controlling the combustion parameters precisely. However, the extension of the flammability limit and the stabilization of lean combustion are required for the commercialization of GDI engines. The reduction characteristics of three-way catalysts (TWC) for lean combustion engines are somewhat limited owing to the high excess air ratio and low exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in the present study, we assess the reaction of exhaust gases and their production in terms of the development of efficient TWCs for lean-burn GDI engines at 2000 rpm / BMEP 2 bar operating conditions, which are frequently used when evaluating the fuel consumption in passenger vehicles. At the lean-combustion operating point, $NO_2$ was produced during combustion and the ratio of $NO_2$ increased, while that of $N_2O$ decreased as the excess air ratio increased.

  • A gasoline-fueled stratified charge compression ignition (SCCI) engine with both direct fuel injection and intake temperature and compression ratio was examined. The fuel was injected directly by using the high temperature resulting from heating intake port. With this injection strategy, the SCCI combustion region was expanded dramatically without any increase in NOx emissions which were seen in the case of compression stroke injection. Injection timing during the intake temperature was found to be an important parameter that affects the SCCI region width. The effect of mixture stratification and the effect of fuel reformation can be utilized to reduce the required intake temperature for suitable SCCI combustion under each set of engine speed and compression ratio conditions.

  • To achieve the requirement for high fuel economy and low emissions, the research for GDI engines is recently very brisk in the whole world. This study was performed to measure distribution of average particle size in non-evaporating spray. The 2-D fluorescence/scattering images of fuel spray were captured simultaneously by visualization system composed of a laser sheet, a doubling prism, optical filters, and an ICCD camera. Using the ratio of the two light intensities, particle size distribution was obtained. The SMD measured by fluorescence/scattering technique was compared with it obtained by PDA. The experimental results show that the spray structure of GDI injector and temporal SMD distribution.

  • In this study numerical and experimental study on the spray atomization characteristics of a GDI injector is performed. To carry out numerical analysis, four hybrid models that are composed of conical sheet disintegration model, LISA model, DDB model, and RT model are used. The experimental results to evaluate the prediction accuracy of hybrid models are obtained by using phase Doppler particle analyzer and spray visualization system. It is shown that the prediction accuracy of hybrid model concerning spray developing process and spray tip penetration is good for all hybrid models, but the hybrid breakup models show different prediction of accuracy in the case of local radial SMD distribution.

  • Today gasoline engines for vehicular application are not only faced with stringent emission regulation but also with increasing requirements to better fuel economy, while guaranteeing power density. The spray-guided type gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine has an advantage of improved thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions. Centrally mounted high pressure injector and adjacent spark plug allow stable lean combustion due to the flexible mixture stratification. In the present study, the performance and emissions characteristics of developed spray-guided type GDI combustion system were evaluated at various excess air ratio conditions. The specific fuel consumption and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced due to the achievement of stable lean combustion under flammability limit. Multiple injection strategy was not helpful to improve fuel consumption while further reduction of $NO_x$ emissions was possible.

  • A gasoline direct injection single cylinder engine has been developed to study operational characteristics for highly stratified conditions. Parameters related to design and experiment were also studied to understand the characteristics of combustion and emissions at some part load conditions. It was found that optimal timings between the end of fuel injection and spark ignition were existed for stable combustion under the stratified modes, In a low engine speed, fuel spray behavior around piston bowl was important for stable combustion. The in-cylinder air motion affecting fuel spray behavior was found to be a dominant factor at higher engine speed as fuel injection timing had to be advanced to secure enough time for fuel evaporation and mixing with surrounding air. As swirl ratio increased, spark timing could be advanced for stable combustion and a higher compression ratio could be used for improved fuel consumption and stable combustion at the stratified mode. It was also observed that electrode geometry and piston bowl shape played an important role for combustion and emission characteristics and some results were shown for comparison.

  • Ultra lean combustion with stratified air-fuel mixture is one of the methods that can improve fuel economy of gasoline engines. The aim of this study is to show that how much fuel economy is improved and what are differences in engine control of the ultra lean combustion compared with stoichiometric combustion. In this study, the BMW N53 GDI engine, which is one of ultra lean combustion GDI engines introduced in the market recently, was tested at various engine operating conditions. Results indicated that fuel consumption rates were improved by 11.9~25.8% by the ultra lean combustion compared with stoichiometric combustion. It was also found that multiple fuel injection, multiple spark, early intake valve opening, and large vlave overlap duration were the features of the ultra lean combustion for combustion stability and emission improvement.
