  • A fiber laser of which wavelength was scanned by an intra-cavity FP (Fabry-Perot) filter was used to interrogate a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor array. We calculated the wavelength variation of the fiber laser using quadrature signal processing with an unbalanced M/Z (Mach-Zehnder) interferometer and time-delayed sampling technique. The calculated wavelengths are mapped to corresponding temporal reflection peaks from the sensor array, which enables more accurate and stable interrogation without the problems caused by the FP filter's nonlinear characteristics. Wavelength resolution of ∼20 pm was obtained in our experimental setup, which could have been greatly enhanced with faster phase modulation.

  • In this paper, the thermal characteristics of a tunable all-optical fiber Bragg grating(FBG) filter was investigated by numerical analysis. From the results, it is possible to tune a Bragg center wavelength along temperature variation because a Bragg center wavelength is varied linearly according to its operating temperature, however, the reflectivity of a Bragg center wavelength was reduced over a limited high temperature. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain the stability of a tunable all-optical FBG filter within $600^{\circ}C$, but it is difficult to tune a Bragg center wavelength over this temperature.

  • We constructed a simple wavelength readout system for a tunable fiber laser which was used for a fiber Bragg grating sensor array system. A quadrature sampling method was used to demodulate wavelength variations of the tunable laser which consisted of a SOA(semi-conductor optical amplifier) and a fiber-optic Fabry-Perot filter. Internal triggers, which have a 90 degree phase period, have been generated by using a double-pass Mach-Zehnder interferometer. From Lissajous plots with quadrature sampled data, a mean phase error of ${\sim}2.51$ mrad was obtained. From the wavelength readout experiments, an accurate and fast linear wavelength demodulation has been confirmed.

  • A time-domain modeling approach is used to study characteristics of a widely tunable coupled-ring reflector (CRR) laser diode(LD). The CRR consists of a bus waveguide and two coupled ring resonators coupled to the bus without resorting to distributed Bragg grating structure. The tuning range can be a few tens of nanometers with a side mode suppression ratio exceeding 35dB through the adjustment of currents into the phase control sections in the rings. The CRR laser diode has long effective cavity length compared to conventional laser diodes. Accordingly, a broad additional resonance peak in the amplitude modulation characteristics is observed between 20 to 30 GHz, implying the extension of amplitude modulation bandwidth.

  • A simple technique for a flexibly tunable and switchable dual wavelength-switchable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser using fiber Bragg gratings is proposed and demonstrated by using both linear cavity loss controlling and homogeneous gain broadening of the EDF. The oscillating wavelength switching is successfully realized by using the modulation of the acousto-optic modulator driven by the RF signal. The wavelength spacing and lasing wavelength of the proposed wavelength-switchable laser can also be controlled by using the bending-induced tension or compression strain. The proposed tunable dual wavelength-switchable fiber laser has a lot of advantages, such as a high extinction ratio larger than 40dB and a high tunability of ~7.2 nm/$m^{-1}$.

  • For the application of structural health monitoring such as AE detection, a stabilized FBG sensor system with wide dynamic range was proposed. A tunable Fabry-Perot filter with narrow free spectral range(FSR) was used to simplify the multiplexing demodulator for FBG vibration sensors. Stabilization controlling system was also developed for the maintenance of maximum sensitivity of the sensors. In order to verify the performance of the proposed FBG vibration sensor system, we measured sensitivity, and the system showed the average sensitivity of 256 $n{\in}_{mas}/{\sqrt{Hz}}$. Finally, multi-points vibration tests using in-line FBG sensors were conducted to validate the multiplexing performance of the FBG system.

  • In this paper, we constructed the Littman type and fixed Littrow type tunable external-cavity diode laser systems. The laser output, which is the 0th-order diffracted beam from the diffraction grating in an external cavity, was the single longitudinal mode. Its FWHM was measured as less than 9MHz. With the diode driving current of 140mA and operating temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, the coarse tuning range of 5.375nm was measured for the Littman type, and of 13.65nm was measured for the fixed Littrow type. A fine tuning experiment in which an external mirror was rotated by a PZT driven by a sawtooth wave was performed, and its tuning range of 0.042nm was measured for both types. The fixed Littrow type tunable external-cavity diode laser system was an improvement on the conventional Littrow type tunable laser system in which the output direction varies due to the grating embedded in the mirror plate.

  • Variable area nozzle, where both throat and exit area vary, is required for optimal expansion and optimal nozzle shape upon operation of after-burner. Steady-state and transient analyses are carried out for each condition with and without afterburner operation and as a function of the location of the nozzle flap. Effects of that nozzle displacement on flow and thrust characteristics are analyzed from numerical results. With variable area nozzle adopted, the combustion field is variable in time, leading to periodically variable thrust. For off-design conditions, flow separation shows up due to over expansion at the flap tips and shock wave does in the nozzle due to under expansion. The undesirable phenomena can be solved by control of variable area nozzle.

  • We propose an optical gas sensor, which consists of a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG), for the detection of acetylene gas. The gas detection scheme is uniquely characterized by modulating the Bragg wavelength of the fiber Bragg grating around a selected absorption line of gas filled in the photonic bandgap fiber. In the measurement, a 2m-long HC-PBGF and FBG with a Bragg wavelength of 1539.02nm were used. The FBG was modulated at 2Hz. We demonstrated that the optical fiber gas sensor was able to selectively measure the 2.5% and 5% of acetylene gases.

  • The recent trend for numerical experiment requires more higher resolution and accuracy. Generally, in the wave field calculation, it starts with a large region formulation first and follows by a separated detailed region formulation by more denser grids for the main interest area considering the geographical and bathymetrical variation. The wave fields resulted from the large region calculation is being introduced into the detail region calculation as the incident waves. In this process there exists a problem of continuity. In order to get over such problem, method of variable gridding system or spectrum sampling, etc., is being used. However, it seems not enough to examine and analyze the related numerical errors. Therefore, it is investigated in this study the field applicability of the most pervasive use of wave model, the nested SWAN model. For this purpose, we made model experiment for two coastal harbours with different tidal environment, and compared and analyzed the result. From the analysis, it was found that both the extracted values, near the boundaries of the large and detail region and the nested formulation of SWAN model, show almost the same and no different between those with different tidal environment conditions. However it is necessary for reducing the numerical errors to set the boundaries for the detailed region outside of the rapid bathymetric change and deeper region.
