It is common that in the vegetable cultivation areas, the farmers tend to continue the heavy fertilization to maximize the crop yields in short term. This results in the accumulation of fertilizer elements in the soil and increase in the electrical conductivity of soil. Disregarding these, farmers continue to apply heavy doses of fertilizers. A field experiment was conducted to find out on such a soil whether fertilizer application taking the quantity of nutrients accumulated in the soil into account would save the fertilizer without losing the yield of crop, using Chinese cabbage and spinach as test crops. The findings of the experiment is summarized as following. 1. The yield of Chinese cabbage was not affected by reduction of $19kg\;P_2O_5/10a$ and $7kg\;K_2O/10a$ as compared to farmers doses, and in case of spinach the yield rather was increased under the reduction of $22kg\;P_2O_5/10a$ and $22kg\;K_2O/10a$. 2. The reduction of fertilizers according to plant nutrient status of soils did not affect the inorganic nutrient contents of the crops significantly, in both Chinese cabbage and spinach. 3. A trend was observed that the reduction in the P and K fertilizers application would shorten the storage period of Chinese cabbage. 4. The reduction in P and K fertilizers application resulted in the reduction in available P, exchangeable K, EC and $NO_3-N$ in the soil after the harvest of the crops.
In Nam-myeon coastal area of southern sea, Korea, the following hydrobiological conditions prevailed during 1997: water temperature: 12.6 ~24.5 $^{\circ}C$ ; Salinity: 27.32 ~33.$10 \textperthousand$, Dissolved oxygen: 7.05 $ml/L$ and Chlorophyll a: 1.69 ~ 7.40 $\mu $/L. Phytoplankton, dominated by Ceratium sp, peaked during June-July. Mean growth rates of the bay scallop of selected and non-selected groups cultured for 185 days in this area from July to December, 1997 were 0.17 and 0.19 mm/day for shell height, and 0.17 and 0.16 g/day for total weight, respectively. Maximum predicted values of shell height, calculated by von Bertalanffy growth model, were 54.98 mm for the selected and 52.62 mm for the non-selected groups. Survival of the selected and non-selected groups was 80.0 and 87.0%, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of ozone gas on paddy rice at the different nutrition levels. Jinjubyeo variety of rice plant was exposed to 0.3 ppm ozone gas for 3 hours. It was cultivated at three different application levels, optimum, -50%, and +50% of optimum of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, respectively. After ozone gas fumigation, percentage of damaged leaf, malondialdehyde contents, activity of peroxidase, and nutrient contents of rice plant were observed. The results obtained are as follows. 1) Percentage of damaged leaf was increased at the both additional 50% application of nitrogen and 50% reduction of potassium. 2) Malondialdehyde contents of leaves were increased with the ozone gas exposure. 3) Percentage of damaged leaf was increased at the lower level of $K_2O/N$ ratio in leaves. 4) Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents in rice leaves were decreased with the ozone gas exposure. 5) The peroxidase bands on gel in electrophoresis were changed by the ozone gas exposure.
In 1980, rice was considerably damaged by abnormal low temperature. In this paper, to determine the effect of low temperature on the growth and nutrition of rice, the experiment were carried out: varietal response to low temperature in the region with different elevations. Regional differences of heading response to low temperature were observed among varieties. The difference of days between regions were bigger in tongil lines than Japonica lines. Especially, Milyang 42 and Hangangchalbeo might belong the cold suceptible group, since the varieties were severely delayed their heading in the high mountainous region as comparred to plain region. The delay of heading with low temperature was brought out grain sterility, and fertility and ripening ratio is influenced cold tolerance and elevations, and it's decreased yield. Varieties with higher grain sterility by low temperature have higher total nitrogen content, but tended to have lower potassium and phosphate contents in the flag leaf. High content of total nitrogen, low contents of potassium and silicate were observed in the sterilized grain chaff an the opposite result were noted in the ferilized grain chaff at the ripening stage. The results reveal that the balance of these mineral element may play an important role in ripening and possibly cold tolerance.
Effects of paddy-upland rotation system on nutrients distribution in soil profile and nutrient balance were studied in paddy fields from 1989 to 1993. The obtained results are summarized as follows. 1. $NO_3{^-}-N$, Av.$P_2O_5$, Ex.-K, and EC were high by small extent in surface layer of 0~20cm soil depth without the sign of salt movement to deeper layers. On the contrary Ex.-ca, Ex.-Mg, and pH became high with increase of soil depths. 2. $NO_3{^-}-N$, Av.$P_2O_5$, Ex.-K, and EC in surface soil were high in the order of Converted, Paddy-Upland Rotation, Potato-Chinese Cabbage>2 Year, Rotation, Potato-Chinese Cabbage>Converted, Paddy-Upland Rotation, Soybean>Continous Paddy, which responded well to fertilizer application rates. On the other hand Ex.-Ca, Ex.-Mg, and pH in whole layers were high in the order of Converted, Paddy-Upland Rotation, Soybean>Converted, Paddy-Upland Rptation, Potato-Chinese Cabbage>2 Year, Rotation, Potato-Chinese Cabbage>Continuous Paddy, which largely depended on plant absorption. 3. Nutrient balance in upland cropping system cultivating potato and Chinese cabbage showed that the input of chemical fertilizer of nitrogen and potassium was less than the plant uptake, while it was reverse for phosphorus with much gap between fertilizer input and plant uptake. Therefore, phosporous was expected to be accumulated by 27kg/10a every year. 4. Nutrient balance in upland cropping system cultivating soybean showed that nitrogen was not deficient to soybean crops even the chemical fertilizer input was less than plant uptake because of nitrogen fixation by rhizobia. However, there was about 1kg/10a deficit of potassium, which resulted dificiency symptom in the middle stage of soybean growth. For phosphorous there was excess of 4kg/10a, which was expected to be short for maintaining phosphorous fertility of upland soils.
The chemical factors of topsoil, which are associated with the prediction models of urea nitrogen (N kg/ha) need under the concept of multinutrient factor balance in soil to maintain optimum nutrient balance in rice plant grown in flooded condition, were the x/z and the Kas/Kai values. In the prediction model or equation $NRe=(58.5+0.647x/z){\cdot}F$, the F was difined as the productivity factor, which was considered to be dependent on the variety, climate and soil, and found to be better estimated as the function of Kas/Kai rather than x/z from the equation Fb=0.65+1.086kas/kai, where the x, z, Kas and Kai, respectively, were available $SiO_2$ ppm, % organic matter, K activity ratio or exchangeable $K^+/(\sqrt{Ca+Mg}+Na^+)$ in topsoil and the ideal K activity ratio determined by the equation Kai=0.03+0.00083x/z for standard variety Jinheung. The relative K activity ratio or Kas/kai in topsoil, which have to be equal to 1.0 in the prediction of K fertilizer need for standard Japonica Variety Jinheung, found to be 1.63 for the varieties of Indica ${\times}$ Japonica or Milyang No. 23 grown in Korean condition and 0.322 for the Indica varieties of IR 8, 20, 36 and 42 gown in the Philippines condition. The ideal K activity rations for different Varieties such as Indies ${\times}$ Japonica grown in Korea or $Kai_1$ and Indica grown in the Philippines or $Kai_2$ were computed to be estimated from the following equations respectively ; $\\Kai_1=0.0489+0.001353X/Z\\Kai_2=0.01+0.000267X/Z$.
An attempt was made to provide the most resonable fertilizer recommendation for sesame and peanut crops based on soil analytical data and yield response to the NPK fertilizer application, which were obtained from field experiments conducted during 1970 to 1993. 1. According to the analytical data of sesame and peanut soils obtained in 1985~1993, the contents of organic matter, available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable K, Ca and Mg were increased in sesame soils, but the those components were decreased in peanut soils. 2. The yield index of the plot without N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ fertilizer were 81-84, 84~92 and 81~92, respectively, as the yield of NPK plot was regarded as 100. 3. Linear or quadratic equations derived from the relationship between soil analysis data and fertilizer application rates were proposed for NPK recommendation. The parameters of soil analysis used in the equations for N, P and K were organic matter, available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable K, respectively. 4. Revised fertilizer recommendation based on the soil chemical status enable to save the fertilizer application of sesame and peanut soils. The amounts of saved NPK fertilizers were 5.1kg N/10a(increase in 2.8kg N/10a for peanut), 0.9~2.9kg $P_2O_5/10a$, and 1.7~5.8kg $K_2O$/10a.
The mutual effects of calcium, potassium and boron on the growth of the leaf lettuce and its following crop of soybean in the granite soil were observed. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The yields of leaf lettuce and soybean were greatly increased by the application of calcium. It was observed that the calcium content in soybean leaf correlated positively with the yields, the number of pods and dry weight of soybean. 2. The application of calcium was effective by itself on the plant growth, the Ca+B application was better effective, and the best effective plot was $Ca+B_1+K_1$. 3. No significant tendency was observed between the Ca/B ratio in plant tissue and its growth. 4. The application of boron increased calcium absorption in plant tissue regardless of the application of calcium. 5. The number of pods and 100 grains weight of soybean were increased by the application of boron, And a positive correlation was observed between the boron content in soybean leaf and the number of pods of soybean. 6. One basal application of calcium, potassium and boron was effective both on leaf lettuce and on its following crop of soybean.
An attempt to adjust the standard levels of NPK fertilizers application was made with the analytical data of soil and the results of field experiments on 18 vegetable crops 1. There was a remarkable accumulation of available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable K of soil in the periods of 1980~1990 comparing with 1960~1970. 2. New fertilizer recommendations based on the accumulation of soil components enabled to decrease fertilizer requirements of major vegetable crops. It was founded that if such new recommendations were adopted by the farmer, 0~6.0kg N/10a, 0.7~12.3kg $P_2O_5/10a$ and 2.0~9.0kg $K_2O/10a$ could be saved without affecting the yield of crops 3. The formulas of fertilizer application for crops were corrected in order to determine optimal rate of each farmer field according to chemical properties of soil.
In 1969, a pot experiment with four replications of 10 treatments including control(without potash) was carried out in order to study the effect of potash top-dressings in the condition of heavy nitrogen application on rice. The results obtained may be summarized as follows. 1. When potash was applied 70% as basic dressing and 30% as top-dressing at ear-formation stage, a considerable increase of the yield of paddy was obtained as compared to the treatment of the whole amount of potash as basic dressing. 2. The antagonism phenomenon of $K_2O$ contents with N contents in the plants appeared to be severe at the maximum reduction division stage and ear-formation stage is next. 3. $K_2O/N$ ratio gave a positive correlation with the yield components before heading and specially, $K_2O/N$ ratio at heading stage was considerably correlated with ripening percentage.
