  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of household income types and sources on the depressions and self-respect of the old aged. Although household income types and sources are supposed to be important to the mental health of the old aged as well as income level, there have been little policy interests to them. This study analyze the relationship between the household income types & sources and the mental health of the old aged, using the 8th data from the Korean Welfare Panel Study. Major findings are as follows. First, we find that there are considerable variations in the household income sources composition among the old aged, and that types of household income are related to the individual and family features of the old aged. Second, the results of regression analyses show that the household income types are associated with the depression and self-respect of the old aged. And, we find that some income sources affects the mental health of the old aged. The results of this study suggest that there should be policy attentions to the mental health effects of the household income sources so as to increase the adequacy of the income security system for the aged in Korea.

  • This study estimates what fraction of the rise in household income inequality in Korean between 1996 and 2000 is accounted for by the change in each of the household income components, such as wages, employment, hours of work of household heads and spouses, household structure, and other incomes. The increased disparities of household heads' wages and labor supply explain, respectively, 70% and 34% of the rise in the difference in incomes between the top 10% and bottom 10% households. Changing labor supply of spouses, in contrast, was a strong countervailing force that diminished the measure of household income inequality by 21%.

평균CPUE는 5월에는 3.2kg/sheet, 6월에는 4.5kg/sheet, 7월에는 4.3kg/sheet, 8월에는 5.1kg/sheet, 9월에는 6.4kg/sheet, 10월에는 5.8kg/sheet였다. 5.

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the nutritional status and prevalence of metabolic syndrome of the people who participated in the KNHANES according to the number of household members. They were assessed by using information from the 2013~2014 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods: A total of 6,088 persons aged 19 years and over participated in 2013~2014 KNHANES, and they were classified into three groups according to the number of household members (single-person, two-person, three-person & over). The dietary behavior, nutritional status, health-related factors and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome of the subjects were investigated with using information from the survey questionnaires of KNHANES. The nutrient intake data of the subjects were obtained by the 24-hour recall method and this was analyzed for evaluating the nutrition adequacy ratio and the index of nutritional quality. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the subjects, and according to the study groups, was estimated using the blood and physical measurement data of the subjects. Results: As for EQ-5D index available for all the health states generated by the EQ-5D descriptive system, the single-person household member was the lowest among all the household types. The index of nutrition quality for protein, crude fiber, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin and vitamin C in the single-person household was lower than that of the two-person or the three-person and over households (p<0.001). The mean adequacy ratio of single-person households was significantly decreased compared with that of the other types of households (p<0.001). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was higher in the single-person households than that in the multiple-person households (p<0.001). Conclusions: These results showed that dietary behaviors, nutrition status and health status might be influenced by the number of household members. The results from this study would be useful for improving Korean people's dietary life and health status by implementing evidence-based, specialized intervention for the members of diverse types of households.

  • One-person household is increasing by the growth of unemployment, divorce, aging in Korea. In particular, One-person households have rapidly increased around Farming & Fishing Regions. In this regard, this research aims to suggest the directions of housing supply for one-person households suitable for Farming & Fishing Regions by investigating the characteristics of one-person households in the social, economic, and physical aspects. This study found out that one-person households could be divided into two groups; one group lived in industrialized Farming & Fishing Regions and the other group lived in traditional Farming & Fishing Regions. For one-person households living in industrialized Farming & Fishing Regions, it is necessary to provide age-mixed residential sites where companies and manufacturers are condensed. On the other hand, for the one-person households living in traditional Farming & Fishing Regions, it in necessary to provide multi-person housing units for increasing the quality of life ofne-person households.

  • Using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (wave 1~11) database, this study analyzed the poverty duration of the poor as a whole and by households' characteristics. For this purpose, I first estimated poverty exit rates and reentry rates applying discrete-time hazard model to the sample, and then calculated poverty duration combining these two probability rates. The results show that about a half of poor households are transitory (short-term) poor with 1~2 years of poverty duration. A quarter is chronic (long-term) poor lasting for 5 or more years of poverty duration. The remained quarter can be categorized as the recurrent or mid-term poor. The socioeconomic characteristics of households greatly affect poverty duration. Long-term poverty is prevalent among female-head households, elderly households, single households, or households headed by a person with a lower level of education. If households' heads do not work, or work as temporary or daily-employed workers, the poverty duration tends to be longer. The findings suggest that the poor consist of various social classes with different characteristics. Efficient anti-poverty policy should be based on thoroughly identifying the specific characteristics and needs of each class.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest functional priority to increase probability to be adopted by single-person household by designating single-person household as potential early adopter of smart home service. Smart home service is spread slowly for its value. This study applied diffusion of innovations theory to solve this problem. Single-person household who has no other family member who can take care of household is chosen as potential early adopter. This study tried to find grounds of functional priorities through an online survey. The survey questionnaires were composed as following. First, representative attributes of single- person household were reviewed, then measuring questions according to the attributes were recomposed based upon preceding study. After that, concept and status of smart home service were reviewed. and smart home service functions to be measured in this study were selected through analysis based upon representative cases, then Measuring questionnaire were made were three factors which chosen by referring to preceding study about perceived attributes of innovations applied to selected functions. As a result of analyzed 62 responses, except excluded functions which has perceived any special value, set priorites with 9 functions. These functional priorities obtained from these studies will play a role as fundamental data to provide valuable service to single-person household and have a meaning as a starting point to increase rate of adoption for smart home service.

  • This study aimed to diagnose the housing conditions of the low income single or couple elderly households. Specifically, this study divided the elderly households into total 8 housing situations according to the three factors of residential area, household composition and income level, and compare the housing satisfaction level by household situation. This study was conducted in the form of the 1:1 interview with structured questionnaire and the field study, targeting the low income single or couple elderly households over 65 years old in urban and rural areas. The 80 collected data was analyzed using the SPSS statistics program. First, the households living in the urban areas and those in the rural areas had different housing conditions. Secondly, there was a clear difference in housing conditions between the single elderly households and couple elderly households. Third, the housing conditions were different depending on the gap in income level. This research is expected to be used as a basic resource to understand their various and differentiated demands and plan the housing environment to properly meet the demand.

  • This case study tried to explore the food insecurity experiences of poor households with children, since 'food insecurity experiences' of poor households represents economic inequality and social deprivation in the midst of a affluent society. Interviewees in this reports reported that they have found difficulties with buying right or enough food materials due to short of income. As well, they have usually experienced the selection and use of only low-grade foods, substitution for more cheap food materials, limitation of available food materials(especially, meats and fruits), and monotonous diets in their everyday lives. Sometimes, their children skipped their meals due to their monotonous diets. To sum up, I could identify that they(poor households with children) had experienced many components of 'food insecurity' constructs in their daily lives. In spite of, there are some distinction between reports through food insecurity scale and records of interviews and the various foods-supply programs have supplemented their food insecure situation. Therefore, we should give consideration to these in the use and interpretation of the results of food insecurity scales.
