An Empirical Analysis of the Aggregate Travel Demands of the Urban Households in Korea (우리나라 도시가구 거주자의 집계교통수요함수 분석)

  • 우리 국민의 교통수요행태를 분석하기 위하여 준이상수요체계(almost ideal demand system) 함수형태의 집계교통수요모형을 설정하였다. 대중교통수단으로서 시내버스, 시외버스, 택시, 기차, 전철이 그리고 개인교통수단으로서 연료비가 포함되었으며, 기타재화 및 서비스에 대한 소비지출이 함께 추정되었다. 추정에 이용된 자료는 통계청의 "도시가계연보"에 수록된 '전국 도시가구 소비지출'과 "물가통계"에 수록된 '전국 도시소비자 물가'이다. 추정결과 모형의 설명력을 나타내는 수정결정계수(adjusted-$R^2$)는 대부분 0.9 내외에서 높게 나타났다. 추정계수는 총 51개중에서 25개가 5% 수준에서 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 추정된 계수값을 이용하여 가격탄력성과 소득탄력성을 구하였다. 자기가격탄력성과 소득탄력성 추정치는 조금 높기는 하나 부호와 상대적 크기가 모두 예상과 일치하고 다른 연구결과들과 유사한 범위에 있다. 연료비에 대한 소득탄력성은 1.72로 가장 높게 나타났고, 대중교통수단은 0.03~0.49 사이에서 나타나므로 교통수단이 정상재임을 의미한다. 보상수요의 교차가격탄력성은 총 15개의 교차관계에서 12개의 관계가 상식과 일치한다. 다음 연구에서는 더 많은 시계열자료를 발굴하여, 장기간의 교통수요 변화에 대한 분석을 시도할 필요가 있다. 또한 초월대수함수나 동태함수 등 다양한 형태의 수요함수를 시도할 필요가 있다. 여러가지 형태의 교통수요함수추정을 통해서 우리 현실에 적합한 교통수요모형을 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 대도시와 중소도시 등 지역별 지출자료를 발굴하여 지역특성을 반영하는 교통수요함수의 추정도 필요하다.

Estimation of city gas demand function using time series data (시계열 자료를 이용한 도시가스의 수요함수 추정)

  • This paper attempts to estimate the city gas demand function in Korea over the period 1981-2012. As the city gas demand function provides us information on the pattern of consumer's city gas consumption, it can be usefully utilized in predicting the impact of policy variables such as city gas price and forecasting the demand for city gas. We apply lagged dependent variable model and ordinary least square method as a robust approach to estimating the parameters of the city gas demand function. The results show that short-run price and income elasticities of the city gas demand are estimated to be -0.522 and 0.874, respectively. They are statistically significant at the 1% level. The short-run price and income elasticities portray that demand for city gas is price- and income-inelastic. This implies that the city gas is indispensable goods to human-being's life, thus the city gas demand would not be promptly adjusted to responding to price and/or income change. However, long-run price and income elasticities reveal that the demand for city gas is price- and income-elastic in the long-run.

Estimation of kerosene demand function using time series data (시계열 자료를 이용한 등유수요함수 추정)

  • This paper attempts to estimate the kerosene demand function in Korea over the period 1981-2012. As the kerosene demand function provides us information on the pattern of consumer's kerosene consumption, it can be usefully utilized in predicting the impact of policy variables such as kerosene price and forecasting the demand for kerosene. We apply least absolute deviations and least median squares estimation methods as a robust approach to estimating the parameters of the kerosene demand function. The results show that short-run price and income elasticities of the kerosene demand are estimated to be -0.468 and 0.409, respectively. They are statisitically significant at the 1% level. The short-run price and income elasticities portray that demand for kerosene is price- and income-inelastic. This implies that the kerosene is indispensable goods to human-being's life, thus the kerosene demand would not be promptly adjusted to responding to price and/or income change. However, long-run price and income elasticities reveal that the demand for kerosene is price- and income-elastic in the long-run.

  • This paper attempts to estimate the residential electricity demand function, using survey data of 521 households in Korea. As the residential electricity demand function provides us information on the pattern of consumer's electricity consumption, it can be usefully utilized in predicting the impact of policy variables such as electricity price and forecasting electricity demands. We apply least absolute deviation(LAD) estimation as a robust approach to estimating parameters. The results showed that price and income elasticities are -0.68 and 0.14 respectively, and statistically significant at the 10% levels. The price and income elasticities portray that residential electricity is price- and income-inelastic. This implies that the residential electricity is indispensable goods to human-being's life, thus the residential electricity demand would not be promptly adjusted to responding to price and/or income change.

Estimation and utilization of transport LPG demand function (수송용 LPG 수요함수의 추정 및 활용)

  • This paper attempts to estimate the demand function for the transport LPG and to analyze long-run and short-run price and income elasticities. In addition, the paper measures consumer surplus and economic value ensuing from the transport LPG consumption by utilizing the estimated long-run price elasticity. The price and the income data are the monthly real transport LPG price and the monthly composite index adjusted by real transport LPG price from 2003 to 2012. Unit root test, co-integration test and error correction model are to take the procedure of estimation of demand curve. The demand for transport LPG is considered to be inelastic and the long-run demand is more elasticity than that of short-run. Price elasticity of demand estimate here is -0.422, and the estimated consumer surplus and economic value in 2010/03 are 966 and 1,781 billion won, respectively.

  • The demand for electricity has a considerable impact on various energy sectors since electricity is generated from various energy sources. This paper attempts to estimate the electricity demand function and obtain some quantitative information on price and income elasticities of the demand. To this end, we apply a lagged dependent variable model to derive long-run as well as short-run elasticities using the time-series data over the period 1991-2014. Our dependent variable is annual electricity demand. The independent variables include constant term, real price of electricity, and real gross domestic product. The results show that the short-run price and income elasticities of the electricity demand are estimated to be -0.142 and 0.866, respectively. They are statistically significant at the 5% level. That is, the electricity demand is in-elastic with respect to price and income changes in the short-run. The long-run price and income elasticities of the electricity demand are calculated to be -0.210 and 1.287, respectively, which are also statistically meaningful at the 5% level. The electricity demand is still in-elastic with regard to price change in the long-run. However, the electricity demand is elastic regarding income change in the long-run. Therefore, this indicates that the effect of demand-side management policy through price-control is restrictive in both the short- and long-run. The growth in electricity demand following income growth is expected to be more remarkable in the long-run than in the short-run.

Estimation of diesel fuel demand function using panel data (시도별 패널데이터를 이용한 경유제품 수요함수 추정)

  • This paper attempts to estimate the diesel fuel demand function in Korea using panel data panel data of 16 major cities or provinces which consist of diesel demands, diesel market prices and gross value added from the year 1998 to 2015. I apply panel GLS(generalized least square) model, fixed effect model, random effect model and dynamic panel model to estimating the parameters of the diesel fuel demand function. The results show that short-run price elasticities of the diesel fuel demand are estimated to be -0.2146(panel GLS), -0.2886(fixed effect), -0.2854(random effect), -0.1905(dynamic panel) respectively. And short-run income elasticities of the diesel fuel demand are estimated to be 0.7379(panel GLS), 0.4119(fixed effect), 0.7260(random effect), 0.4166(dynamic panel) respectively. The short-run price and income elasticities explain that demand for diesel fuel is price- and income-inelastic. The long-run price and income elasticities are estimated to be -0.4784, 1.0461 by dynamic panel model, which means that demand for diesel fuel is price-inelastic but income-elastic in the long run. In addition I apply dummy variable model to estimate the effect of 16 major cities or provinces on diesel demands. The results show that diesel demands is affected 10 regions on the basis of Seoul.

한국(韓國)의 수출함수(輸出函數) : 수출단가(輸出單價)와 수출물가(輸出物價)의 비교(比較) 및 효율적(效率的) 공적분추정법(共積分推定法)의 이용(利用)

  • 본고에서는 우리나라의 수출수요함수(輸出需要函數) 추정(推定)에 있어서 1) 통상적으로 많이 사용되고 있는 수출단가지수(輸出單價指數) 대신 수출물가지수(輸出物價指數)를 이용하고, 2) 공적분(共積分)벡터의 추정에 있어서 Engle and Granger(EG)의 정태적(靜態的) OLS 대신 효율적(效率的) 추정법(推定法)(efficient estimator)을 이용하여 수출(輸出)의 소득(所得) 및 가격탄성치(價格彈性値)를 추정(推定)하고자 하였다. 추정결과(推定結果) 소득탄성치(所得彈性値)는 어느 경우에나 큰 차이가 없었으나 가격탄성치(價格彈性値)에 있어서는 큰 차이가 발견되었다. 즉 수출단가(輸出單價)를 EG방법(方法)으로 추정(推定)한 경우에는 비탄력적(非彈力的)인 것으로, 수출물가(輸出物價)를 이용한 경우에는 단위탄력성(單位彈力性)을 갖는 것으로, 그리고 효율적(效率的) 추정법(推定法)을 이용한 경우에는 매우 탄력적(彈力的)인 것으로 판명되었다. 또 EG 방법을 이용한 경우에는 공적분관계(共積分關係)의 존재가 부정되었으나 효율적(效率的) 추정법(推定法)을 이용한 경우에는 유의(有意)한 공적분관계(共積分關係)가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다.

Estimating the Contribution of Industrial Water on Output and Price Elasticities in Manufacture (제조업 생산에 대한 공업용수의 한계생산가치와 가격탄력성 연구)

  • This paper estimates output and price elasticities of the industrial water in order to provide the government with tools that help make educated decisions with regard with the water provision policies rendering the latter more efficient. The estimated output elasticity produces useful insights on the role of industrial water as an input into the production process while the estimate of price elasticity enablesus to forecast the effects of various water pricing policies. This paper employs the marginal productivity method in order to estimate the abovementioned elasticities. The magnitude of the estimated output elasticity imply that the value of industrial water is much higher than its average price while the price elasticity estimate suggests that the water pricing policy can be an effective tool of controlling the demand for industrial water.

  • As part of their marketing policy, some suppliers allow retailers a period of credit in anticipation of increasing demand for the products they supply. The opportunity to defer payments on products through credit transactions has the effect of reducing retailers' inventory investment costs, and as a result, retailers determine selling prices in anticipation of increased demand from buyers. This study aims to analyze the inventory model that determines the retailer's selling price and EOQ(Economic Order Quantity) under the assumption that the buyer's demand is an exponentially decreasing function of the retailer's selling price in the credit transaction supply chain consisting of suppliers, retailers, and buyers. The products supplied for problem analysis include the case of deteriorating products that deteriorate over time, and the effect of the credit transaction period, the index of price elasticity and the degree of deterioration on the retailer's selling price and EOQ is analyzed.
