The aim of this study was to compare the effects of isoflavone and Cynanchum wilfordii for improvement of premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea. Subjects were 30 college women in Busan, divided into three groups (CG; control group, n=10; IS group; isoflavone supplement group, n=10; CS group; Cynanchum wilfordii supplement group, n=10). They showed 5.0 or higher for menstrual pain when tested by the VAS. IS group was allocated a isoflavone pill (500 mg/day) for 8 weeks, and CS group was allocated a Cynanchum wilfordii pill (6 g/day) for 8 weeks. We administered a menstrual distress questionnaire (MDQ), and visual analogue scale(VAS). There were no differences among the three groups in general characteristics, nutrients intake, MDQ, or VAS. In the CG group, there were no differences in MDQ, or VAS after 8 weeks. In the IS group, negative emotions, behavioral changes, concentration, pain, autonomic nervous system response, water retention, and skin changes significantly improved (P<0.05). In the CS group, negative emotions, pain, autonomic nervous system response, and water retention significantly decreased after 8 weeks (P<0.05). Changes in negative emotion, pain, autonomic nervous system response, water retention, skin changes significantly improved in the CS group compared to the control group (P<0.05). VAS significantly decreased in the IS and CS groups (P<0.05). The decrease in VAS differed among three groups, with the CS group showing a larger decrease than the control group and IS group (P<0.001).

  • Opuntia cactus grows in the southern part of Korea, Geoje Island, Jeju Island, and South Coast. The flowers bloom around April to May of each year, and purple berries ripen around November to December. It has been widely used in home medicine since ancient times and it has great effects on blood circulation, detoxification, analgesia and antioxidant activity. In this study, we tried to demonstrate antioxidant, antidiabetic and antimicrobial activities of Opuntia monacantha Haw., and also grasp the value as a functional raw material. As a result, a strong antioxidative effect was confirmed by extracting taxifolin which is an antioxidative substance in Opuntia monacantha Haw. In the antidiabetic function test, a high level of antidiabetic function was confirmed when compared to that of using a commercially available diabetic drug. In addition, as a result of the antimicrobial effect measurement, it showed a strong antimicrobial activity on E.coli and Salmonella, and proved the excellent value of Opuntia manacantha Haw. as a functional ingredient.

  • The Nagoya Protocol will enter into force on 12 October, 2014 during the period of UNCBD COP12 which will be held in Pyeongchang, Korea. In this circumstance, it is essential to analyze other countries' legislations and find various related issues. Based on that analysis, Korea can set its course for related policies and also improve its own legislations. EU and China were selected as comparison countries since EU is one of the leading countries trying to establish an international environmental law system and China is regarded as a model country representing LMMC (Like-Minded Mega-diverse Countries) in the world. Based on this study, it is highly recommended for Korea to assert the need for dispute resolution between private and government parties and also trilateral co-management of trans-boundary genetic resources and related traditional knowledge among Korea, China and Japan. In addition, Korea also needs to improve its legislation towards integrating the management and control of genetic resources.

  • Menstruation being an inevitable phenomenon for every women, reducing the discomfort during the menstruation period is one of the important issues for women's well-being. This study was conducted through user evaluations on disposable pads and reusable pads to comprehend the discomfort factors of the sanitary pads and to provide basic information for improvement. Negative symptoms of the reponses on menstruation outnumbered the positive aspects, and the results suggested that menstruation period was perceived as a painful experience to women. There were difference between the negative and positive responses regarding the designs, functions, fittings, wearing sensations. and disposabilities of disposable pads and reusable pads. While disposable pads had the strength of convenient use, it had the weakness of wearing sensation, and while reusable pads had the strength of wearing sensation, it had the weakness of inconvenient keeping. When designs reflecting these results are made, it is expected to bring a synergy effect by bringing both a more pleasant menstruation period for the consumers and eventual profit to the manufacturers.

  • Catamenial hemoptysis is syndrome characterized by bleeding from the bronchial trees and lungs that occurs synchronously with the female menstrual cycle. Etiologic mechanism of pulmonary endometriosis is still controversial, and the diagnosis is usually made on the basis of the clinical history and exclusion of other causes of recurrent hemoptysis. Serial computed tomograms of the chest during and in the interval between menstruations have been proved to be a useful confirmatory test. We experienced a 33-year-old female patient who had been previously diagnosed as pelvic endometriosis pathologically, experienced cyclic hemoptysis during menstruations. The diagnosis of pulmonary endometriosis was made based on her history and changes in the character of the lesions as documented on radiologic studies of the chest. She was treated successfully with GnRH analogue and there is no evidence of recurrence.

  • Purpose: In Oriental medicine, menstruation is a significant index of women's health. Especially high school girls often have various menstrual problems. We think that students who have menstrual problem have some symptoms in relation to an etiological cause. So we had carried out this study to investigate association of DSOM scores and an abnormality of menstruation in oriental medicine. Methods: First we have 2137 high school girls answer to menstrual questionnaire that we made and DSOM, next investigated the pathogenic factor of DSOM which effect dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia using regression model. Logistic regression analysis indicate as follows. Results: 1. In comparison with dysmenorrhea, Qi depression(氣滯), blood stasis(血瘀), dampness (濕), phlegm(痰) is associated positively and liver(肝) negatively. The sensitivity is 64.3%, and the specificity is 75.1%. 2. In comparison with menorrhagia, Blood deficiency(血虛), Qi depression(氣滯), blood stasis(血瘀) is associated positively and liver(肝) negatively. The sensitivity is 53.9%, and the specificity is 76.1%. Conclusion: In this study, that has been carried out to organize the diagnosis of dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia in Oriental medicine, we can see that the disease factors of them were correlated with our Medical theory.

  • Constitutional trisomy 8 mosaicism (CT8M) is a relatively rare aneuploidy in humans with characteristic phenotypes including typical craniofacial feature (such as deformed skull, prominent forehead, low-set and/or dysplastic ears), skeletal malformation, cardiac anomaly, renal malformation, cryptochidism, varying degree of developemental delay. Due to the extremely variable phenotypic and cytogenetic expression, CT8M has gone undiagnosed in certain patients. We report a 28-year-old women with secondary amenorreha without characteristic CT8M phenotype. Chromosomal analysis showed a CT8M (47,XX,+8[9]/46,XX[41]).
