  • This study investigated the prevalence of scoliosis among undergraduate students who were in early adulthood, and to examine its relationship with body mass index (BMI), which has been associated with scoliosis in previous studies. A descriptive survey of 158 students of universities based in Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, and Gyeonggi Province was conducted. A structured questionnaire comprising items pertaining to general features, postural features, and BMI was used, and the angle of the trunk rotation (ATR) was measured directly with a scoliometer to assess the spinal angle. Participants with an ATR of greater than $6^{\circ}$ were classified into the scoliosis group. Data were collected for three weeks from November 7, 2014. Scoliosis and BMI were analyzed for their frequencies and percentages, and their relationships were analyzed using the ${\chi}^2$-test and Logistic regression. Overall, 114 (72.2%) participants had an ATR of smaller than $5^{\circ}$, while 44 (27.8%) had an ATR of greater than $6^{\circ}$. After excluding the confounding variables, the overweight group was 2.63 times more likely than the normal BMI group to have an ATR of greater than $6^{\circ}$ which was statistically significant. However, the underweight group was 0.24 times less likely than the normal BMI group to have an ATR of greater than $6^{\circ}$, but this difference was not statistically significant. Although early examination and management of scoliosis in South Korea is generally performed on children and adolescents, the high prevalence of scoliosis among university students found in this study calls for aggressive early examination and management for this age group as well.

  • This study was conducted to examine the predictive factors for health promotion behaviors of breast cancer patients, focusing on Pender's health promotion model (1996). Data were collected from 121 patients using a structured questionnaire from September 18 to October 26 in 2015. The data were analyzed with a t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis using SPSS 20.0 for Windows. The predictive factors for the health promotion behavior of the participants were social support, commitment to a plan of action, prior behavior, activity related effects, perceived self-efficacy, family function, perceived benefits of action, and situational influences. The total explanatory power of these factors was 57.8%. Development and application of a nursing intervention plan that enhances patient compliance with health promotion behavior is needed to enable breast cancer patients undergoing rehabilitation to maintain their optimal health and live a high-quality life. Patients who showed a low degree of predictive factors identified in this study are in particular need of attention.

  • The aim of this study was to describe the self-esteem, appearance satisfaction, and job-seeking stress and to investigate the effects of self-esteem and appearance satisfaction on job-seeking stress in nursing and healthcare related students. A total of 515 third and fourth year graduate students were included in this study. The data were collected between May 2 and May 13 of 2016 and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS 19.0. The economic state had an influence on self-esteem, appearance satisfaction, and job-seeking stress; however, the motive of application and decision of the department of selection did not have any influence. A positive correlation was found between self-esteem and appearance satisfaction. Moreover, job-seeking stress was negatively correlated with both self-esteem and appearance satisfaction. The strongest predictor of job-seeking stress was self-esteem. Self-esteem, employment-area, satisfaction with major, and college majors accounted for 24.4% of job-seeking stress based on multiple regression analysis. These findings indicate that it is necessary to develop a program that would increase self-esteem and satisfaction with major and decrease job-seeking stress according to college majors and employment-area in nursing and health care related students.

  • This study was conducted to identify and analyze the educational needs for key vocational competency in nursing students. The participants were 411 nurse students at five universities and the survey was conducted from June 1 to June 31, 2016. The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 23.0 using descriptive statistics, a paired T-test, Borich's Needs Analysis, as well as the Locus for Focus Model. Based on the results, the subjects recognized the present level of 'professional ethics,' 'self development' and 'interpersonal skills' to be high and those of 'communication skills' and 'skills for understanding groups' to be low. 'Professional ethics,' 'self development,' 'problem solving skills' and 'communication skills' were the most important sub-elements of vocational competency. A significant difference in recognition levels between present and importance ere found in all components of vocational competency. The four priorities were analyzed based on Borich's needs value. In accordance with the Locus for Focus model, 'communication skills,' 'problem solving,' 'resource management skills' and 'self development' were identified as the highest priority sub-factors of vocational competency to nursing students. Based on the result of this study, it is expected to be used as the basic data to develop the nursing student's vocational curriculum and program.
