  • The downstream of the Nam River Dam is crucial region for long-term water resource planning for Busan and Gyeongnam Province. Thus, the analysis of flow behavior and water quality is necessary for the sustainable surface water management and the control of pollutant source. In this study, the flow field and BOD transport at the downstream of Nam River Dam were analyzed by incorporating 2-D water quality model, RAM4 and 3-D water quality model, WASP with the hydrodynamic model, RAM2 and EFDC, respectively. The application of 2-D flow analysis model, RAM2 showed that velocity distributions at the five transverse sections of the meandering part closely followed the measured values by ADCP, and the flow field and overflow characteristic at the submerged weir showed satisfactory performance compared with the result of 3-D EFDC model. In addition, the BOD concentration field obtained by RAM2-RAM4 coupled modeling was in good agreement with the result by EFDC-WASP model throughout the computational domain. The hydrodynamic characteristic and water quality at the downstream reach of Nam River Dam are mainly influenced by the Dam discharge, and the water quantity is closely related to the water quality control and fishery environment at the lower part of Nakdong River. Therefore, when further quantitative analysis is necessary regarding these issues, 2-D semi-coupled modeling is recommended in terms of computational effectiveness and model application aspect.

  • Coastal water including estuaries has distinctive environmental characteristics where sediments are transported and deposited by flowing river water, providing an environment in which fluid mud layers can be formed. Acoustic method is mostly used to detect or monitor the fluid mud layer. However, since sound propagating in this layer suffers severe attenuation, it is important to estimate the accurate attenuation coefficient for various concentrations of fluid mud layer for the successful use of the acoustic method. In this paper, measurement results of attenuation coefficient for 3.5, 5, and 7.5 MHz ultrasounds were presented. The measurements were made in a small-size water tank in which suspended sediment samples with various sediment concentrations were formed using kaolinite powder. The results were compared to the model predictions obtained by attenuation coefficient model in which the mean grain size (called as Mass-median-diameter, D50) was used as input parameter. There were reasonable agreements between measured attenuation coefficients and model outputs predicted using the particle range of D50 ${\pm}20%$. The comparison results imply that although the suspended sediments consist of various-sized particles, sound attenuation might be greatly influenced by amount of particle with a size which has a larger attenuation than that of any particle in the suspended sediments for the frequency used.

  • Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) is one of the important components of optical properties of seawater to determine ecosystem dynamics in a given marine area. The optical characteristics of CDOM may depend on the various ecosystem and environmental variables in the sea and those variables may vary region to region. Therefore, the retrieval algorithm for determining light absorption coefficient of CDOM ($a_{CDOM}$) using satellite remote sensing reflectance ($R_{rs}$) developed from other region may not be directly applicable to the other region, and it must be validated using an in-situ ground-truth observation. We have tested 6 known CDOM algorithms (three Semi-analytical and three Empirical CDOM algorithms) developed from other regions of the world ocean with laboratory determined in-situ values for the East Sea using field data collected during seven oceanographic cruises in the period of 2009~2011. Our field measurements extended from the coastal waters to the open oceanic type CASE-1 Waters. Our study showed that Quasi-Analytical Algorithm (QAA_v5) derived $a_{CDOM}$(412) appears to match in-situ $a_{CDOM}$(412) values statistically. Semi-analytical algorithms appeared to underestimate and empirical ones overestimated $a_{CDOM}$ in the East Sea. $a_{CDOM}$(412) value was found to be relatively high in the relatively high satellite derived-chlorophyll-a area. $a_{CDOM}$(412) value appears to be influenced by the amount of chlorophyll-a in seawater. The outcome of this work may be referenced to develop $a_{CDOM}$ algorithm for the new Korean Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI).

  • To determine the concentration of trace metals in the tissues of whale from the coastal ocean of Korea, we measured the concentration of trace metals (Cu, Cd, Pb, As, Zn and Hg) in the organs (liver, intestine, muscle, epidermis and blubber) of minke whale entangled from the eastern coast of Korea in 2009. The highest and lowest concentrations of Cu, Cd, Zn, and Hg were found in the liver and blubber, respectively. In contrast, the highest and lowest concentration of As was found in the blubber and muscle, respectively. The accumulation trend of trace metals in the organs of minke whales was in the order Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Hg > Cd. The concentrations of Cu, As and Zn in liver and epidermic were higher in male than in female, whereas the concentrations of Cu and Pb in intestine and muscle were higher in female than in male. The mature individuals of minke whale were much higher Cd in liver, Cd and Hg in muscle, As and Hg in epidermic and blubber, Cd, As and Hg in intestine than immature individuals of minke whale.

  • Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, As and Cd) in surface sediments from 96 sites in Masan and Jinhae Bay were studied in order to understand metal contamination. Results show that the surface sediments were mainly enriched by Cu (18-294 ppm), Zn (67-568 ppm), Pb (10-120 ppm) and Cd (0.2-3.5 ppm). The coastal zone of Masan Bay was significantly more contaminated than the non-coastal zone, and spatial distribution pattern suggested additional sources of heavy metal input in the coastal area. The enrichment ratio and geoaccumulation index ($I_{geo}$) have been calculated and the relative contamination levels assessed in the study area. The enrichment ratios of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in Masan Bay have been observed to be relatively high. $I_{geo}$ results reveal that the study area is not contaminated with respect to Fe, Mn, Cr and Ni; moderately to strongly contaminated with Cu, Zn and Pb; and strongly to strong contaminated with Cd. The high contents of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in the study area result from anthropogenic activities in the catchment area. Based on the eight different sediment quality guideline values from USA (ERL, ERM), Canada (TEL, PEL), Australia/New Zealand (ISQG-high, ISQG-low) and Hong Kong (ISQV-low, ISQV-high), sediment quality of Masan and Jinhae Bay was also assessed and characterized.

  • This is the first attempt to produce simultaneous surface current field from satellite altimeter data for the entire East Sea and to provide surface current information to users with formal description. It is possible to estimate surface geostrophic current field in near real-time because satellite altimeters and coastal tide gauges supply sea level data for the whole East Sea. Strength and location of the major currents and meso-scale eddies can be identified from the estimated surface geostrophic current field. The mean locations of major surface currents were explicated relative to topographic, ocean-surface and undersea features with schematic representation of surface circulation. In order to demonstrate the practical use of this surface current information, exemplary descriptions of annual, seasonal and monthly mean surface geostrophic current distributions were presented. In order to objectively classify surface circulation patterns in the East Sea, empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was performed on the estimated 16-year (1993-2008) surface current data. The first mode was associated with intensification or weakening of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) flowing northward along the east coast of Korea and of the anti-cyclonic circulation southwest of Yamato Basin. The second mode was associated with meandering paths of the EKWC in the southern East Sea with wavelength of 300 km. The first and second modes had inter-annual variations. The East Sea surface circulation was classified as inertial boundary current pattern, Tsushima Warm Current pattern, meandering pattern, and Offshore Branch pattern by the time coefficient of the first two EOF modes.

  • The erosion, suspension, and transport of sediment frequently occur in the coastal waters and estuarine. These processes often generate the so-called fluid mud layer, which is defined as a high-concentration aqueous suspension of fine grained sediment (> 10 g/l), consisting mainly of silt and clay-size particles. Therefore the high-resolution ultrasound is mostly used to detect or monitor the fluid mud layer. Because the sound attenuation tends to increase rapidly with the suspended sediment concentration, it is necessary to consider the accurate attenuation correction to estimate the backscattering strengths from the suspended sediment layers. In this paper, the volume backscattering strengths with various suspended sediment concentrations were measured using 5-MHz ultrasound signal in a small-scale water tank. The sound attenuation due to the viscosity and scattering from suspended sediment particles was predicted by the Richard's model and applied to the sonar equation to estimate the volume backscattering strengths from the suspended sediment concentrations. For the case that the additional attenuation was not considered, the volume backscattering strengths increased to the concentration of 20 g/l, and over this point, the backscattering strengths were roughly constant. However, for the case that the attenuation due to the suspended sediment concentration was considered, the backscattering strengths increased with the concentration.

  • There have rarely been performed for the clay mineralogy of the East Sea sediments except for few studies about paleoenvironmental aspect. This study inferred the provenance of sediments based on the clay mineral characteristics and distribution pattern for the 120 sediment samples collected by the box corer from the Gangneung-Donghae area between 2017-2019. The relative proportions of the four major clay minerals are abundant in the order of illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. The continental shelf sediments below water depth 150 m have more chlorite and kaolinite content and better illite crystallinity, but less illite and smectite content, and S/I index than those of continental slope sediments. Clay mineral composition of the continental shelf sediments are influenced by the adjacent continental geology, because north site (Gangneung area) has more chlorite but south site (Donghae area) has more kaolinite. These characteristics and distribution pattern of clay minerals indicate that the provenance of sediments are different between continental shelf and continental slop. The continental shelf sediments may be introduced the study area by the adjacent small rivers whereas the continental slope sediment might be supplied by current from the south of the study area.

  • Seabird distribution in the East Sea was studied from April to May 2007 using line transect counts. We observed a total of 1,379 individuals of 23 species including 14 species of seabird. The overall seabird sighting rate was 2.5 birds $km^{-2}$. The Streaked shearwater(Calonectris leucomelas)(74.5%) was the numerically dominant species. Ancient murrelets(Synthliboramphus antiquus)(8.3%), red-throated divers(Gavia stellata)(5.0%), common terns(Sterna hirundo)(2.1%), Pacific divers(Gavia pacifica)(2.0%), and black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris)(1.1%) were also frequently observed. The sightings of seabirds was highest between $36^{\circ}N$ and $37^{\circ}N$ of the coastal area of the Korean peninsular. However, the index of species diversity(H') was higher between $35^{\circ}N$ and $36^{\circ}N$. The sighting rates of most observed species decreased with distance from the coastline. The distribution patterns of Streaked shearwater were linked to the variation in the distribution pattern of minke whales(Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Also, spatial segregation was found in the distributions of the two species of divers(Gavia spp.).
