Spawning Behavior and Early Life History of Grass Puffer, Takifugu niphobles (Jordan et Snyder) (Teleostei: Tetraodontidae) (복섬, Takifugu niphobles(Jordan et Snyder)의 산란습성(産卵習性) 및 초기생활사(初期生活史))

  • The purpose of present the study was to describe the spawning behavior and early life history of the grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles. The grass puffer was caught at the spawning ground on the coast Dolsan, Korea from May to the 1998. Artificial fertilization was carried out to get fertilied eggs. Spawning season was from the end of May to the beginning of July on the coast of the Dolsan, Korea. Form 2~6 days before the spring tide the aduct males and females began to aggregate in the shore water, and they spawned in the upper part of intertidal zone exposed to air among pebble stone. The fertilized eggs were demersal, transparent and spherical in shape, and its diameter were 0.87~0.95 mm with several oil globules of 0.0014~0.0540 mm. Hatching began about 146 hours after fertilization under water temperature $21.2{\sim}22.3^{\circ}C$. The newly-hatched larva was 2.02~2.24 mm in total length (TL, mean: 2.14 mm), with 22~24(8~9+14~15) myotomes, and mouth and anus was not yet open. In 3 days after hatching it was measured 2.64~2.93 mm in TL (mean: 2.76 mm), and yolk sac was completely absorbed and transformed to postlarval stage. In 15 days after hatching it was measured 4.43~4.82mm in TL (mean: 4.59mm), and the caudal notochord flexion started. The larvae reached the juvenile stage in 28 days after hatching and attained 7.55~7.65mm in TL (mean: 7.60mm), and all fin-rays were formed.

Evaluation of Shoreline Retreat Rate due to a Sea Level Rise using Theory of Equilibrium Beach Profile (평형해빈단면이론을 이용한 해수면 상승에 따른 해안후퇴율 산정)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate coastal erosion due to a sea-level rise. The shoreline retreat rate was calculated due to future sea-level rise. Shoreline retreat rates were quantified with the cross-sectional data of 23 sandy coasts (12 sites from east coast, 5 sites from south coast, and 6 sites of west coast) and 3 cross-sectional profiles from each side of the coasts in Korea. The theory of equilibrium beach profile was employed in this study to evaluate the applicability of the theory into the coast of Korea and was tested with 15 cross-sectional beach profiles. Four scenarios of future sea level rise such as 38 cm, 59 cm, 75 cm, and 100 cm were adopted to estimate the shoreline retreat rates. Overall shoreline retreat rates for the coasts in Korea were predicted as 43.7% for 38 cm, 60.3% for 59 cm, 69.2% for 75 cm, and 80.1% for 100 cm sea level rises, respectively. Retreat rates in the east coast (29.6% for 38 cm, 45.1% for 59 cm, 56.0% for 75 cm, and 69.9% for 100 cm) showed relatively low compared to the south coast (51.9%, 67.6%, 77.2%, 87.3%) and the west coast (53.8%, 71.0%, 78.5%, 86.4%). However, all sandy coasts in Korea were assessed to be vulnerable with increasing sea-level rise. There are uncertainties in the assessment of this study, which include the limitation of the assessment model and the lack of the spatio-temporal data of the beach profiles. Therefore, this study shows that it is very important to spend integrated efforts to respond coastal erosion including comprehensive observations(monitoring) and the development of scientific understanding on the field.

Reproductive Cycle of Small Abalone, Haliotis diversicolor aquatilis in Jeju Coastal Waters (제주연안에 서식하는 오분자기, Haliotis diversicolor aquatilis의 생식주기)

  • Reproductive cycle of the small abalone, Haliotis diversicolor aquatilis which collected from Seong-san coastal waters, Jeju, Korea were investigated monthly from May 2006 to April 2007 using histological methods. The gonad index (GI) of male and female reached a peak in June ($70.72{\pm}5.20$) and July ($55.38{\pm}11.73$). Subsequently, GI decreased in September (Male, $21.27{\pm}2.91$; Female, $27.75{\pm}4.76$) and increased again in October (Male, $48.49{\pm}8.39$; Female, $51.36{\pm}7.47$), respectively. After that, GI gradually decreased. In March 2007, GI was reached the minimum (Male, $8.46{\pm}0.57$; Female, $9.69{\pm}0.88$). The reproductive cycle of female and male could be divided into six successive stages ; In female, multiplication (February and May), growing (February to May), mature (April to July), partial spawning (May to November), degenerating (October to December) and recovery (September to October and December to February) stage. In male, multiplication (February and May), growing (March to May), mature (April to July), spawning (June to November), degenerating (November to February) and recovery (September to February) stage. The yellowish granular cells have been observed more in multiplication, growing, degenerating, and recovery stage than mature and partial spawning stage. The results of GI and histological observations of the gonads suggested that this species could be presumed as multi- spawning characteristics more two times in spawning seasons.

Polychaete Feeding Guilds from the Continental Shelf Off the Southeastern Coast of Korea (한국(韓國) 동남해역(東南海域)에 분포(分布)하는 다모류(多毛類)의 식이조합(食餌組合))

  • The feeding guild classification proposed by Fauchald and Jumars (1979) and the relationship between this guild structure and the habitat environment were examined based on the quantitative polycheate samples collected on the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of Korea. Total 12 feeding guilds were found and the major feeding guilds of polychaetes were BSX (burrowing, sessile, non-jawed), SDT (surface deposit feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate), SST (surface deposit feeding, sessile, tentaculate), BMX (burrowing, motile, non-jawed), BMJ (burrowing, motile, jawed), SDJ (surface deposit feeding, discretely motile, jawed). There were more significant associations between feeding guilds and mean grain size (${\phi}$); SST and BMJ showed a positive correlation with mean phi, whereas CDJ (carnivore, discretely motile, jawed) and FDT (filter feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate), a negative value. The CDJ and CMX (carnivore, motile, non-jawed) guilds showed positive correlations with sand content, but only SST guild showed a positive correlation with clay. The heterogeneity of sediment or sorting value (${\phi}$) was highly associated with various feeding strategies of polychaetes. Surface deposit feeders and filter feeders, sessile, and tentaculate strategies were associated with poorly sorted or heterogeneous sediments. Some preliminary polychaete feeding surfaces were posed. Southern and northern coastal region composed of muddy sediment were characterized by SDJ; northern slope of mud by SST; central coast of mud by SDT, BSX; and BMX; southern offshore of sandy sediment by SDJ and IDT (interface feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate).

Reference Values and Water quality Assessment Based on the Regional Environmental Characteristics (해역의 환경특성을 고려한 해양환경 기준설정과 수질등급 평가)

  • For the development of reference values and evaluation of water quality in various environmental conditions, we divided the coastal region around Korean peninsular into 5 distinctive ecological regions based on the influence of surface current, depth, tidal range, turbidity, and climate condition. We used national marine environment monitoring data collected by National Fisheries Research & Development Institute(NFRDI) from 2000-2009. For the reference values, we used maximum seasonal mean from 2000 to 2007 for DIN, DIP, and chlorophyll-a and minimum seasonal mean for secchi depth measured at stations without the influence of river runoff in each ecological regions. For the reference value of bottom dissolved oxygen saturation, we used minimum mean value of 90% calculated from minimal riverine influence stations of whole regions. We calculated enrichment score for each assessment criteria. The enrichment score of DIN, DIP, and Chlorophyll-a was 1 (=< reference value), 2 (< 110% of reference value), 3 (< 125% of reference value), 4 (< 150% of reference value), and 5 (> 150% of reference value). The enrichment score of DO saturation and Secchi depth was 1 (> reference value), 2 (> 90% of reference value), 3 (>75 % of reference value), 4 (> 50% of reference value), and 5 (< 50% of reference value). We calculated water quality index using weighted linear combination of five enrichment score for the comparison of whole regions. From the water quality index distribution calculated from all stations between 2000 and 2007 period, we classified into 5 grade based on the standard deviation calculated from total water quality index. We assigned grade very good(I), good(II), moderate(III), bad(IV), and very bad(V) when the water quality index was less than 23, minimum + 1 sd, +2 sd, +3 sd, and grater than minium+ 3 sd, respectively.

Study on the Contents of Trace Elements in Foods (on the Trace Element Contents of Shellfish in Korean coastal Water) (식품중의 미량금속에 관한 연구조사 (연안 견류중의 중금속 함유량에 관하여))

  • In 1987, the level of heavy metals were determined ina total of 200 samples of 9 species of shellfish of Korea. The samples were collected at the fish. markets by 10 Public Institute of Health. The samples were whelk (Buccinum striatiBBimum), oyster (Crassostrea gigas), ark shell(Tegillarca granesa), shartnecked clam (Venerupis semidecussta), hard clam (Meretrix lusoria), top shell (Turbo cornutus), abalone (Haliotis gigantea), ark shell (Scapharea broughtonii), sea-mussel (Mytilus conuscus gould), respectively. The levels of total mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, copper, zinc and manganese were determined. The total mercury levels were determined by mercury analyzer using the combustion gold amalgamation method. The arsenic level were determined by spectrophotometry using colorimetric sil ver diethyldithiocarbamate method after dry ash dige8tion of the samples with magnesium oxide and magnesium nitrate. The levels of other metals were determined by inductively coupled pluma spectrophotometry after wet digestion of the samples with nitric acid and su1furic acid. The results were summerized as follows; 1. The overallranges and mean(ppm) were; Hg, ND-O.221 (0.036); Pb, 0.05-1.51 (0.37); Cd, 0.02-1.86 (0.61); As, 0.5-3.97 (1.22); Cu, 0.14-54.16 (4.93); Zn, 7.40-207.17 (30.09); Mn, 0.13-s.72 (3.40). 2. The levels of all 6 metals were found to be below the maximum permissible Iimits set by the Japan lor mercury, the Netherland for lead the Hong Kong for cadmium. The Finland for Arsenic no statutory Iimits for Zn and Mn in shellfish in any countries. 3. The results show that all the 9 species of shellfish studied, none have accumulated levels dangerous enough to pose a health problem.roblem.

Environmental Survey on the Cultivation Ground in the West Coast of Korea (서해연안의 양식장 환경조사 3. 부안 백합 양식장 환경)

  • In puan area the environmental surveys were carried out at two farms of hard clam, Meretrix lusoria from April 1987 to November 1978 in order to know heather the farm environments could be rehabilitated for the cultivation of hard clam or not. The range of temperature of surface seawater was $10.7{\~}27.4^{\circ}C$, pH $7.6{\~}8.2$, salinity $22.3{\~}30.3$ ppt, COD $0.20{\~}4.71\;mg/{\ell}$, sulfide $0.04{\~}0.22\;{\mu}g-at./{\ell}$, suspended solid $34.8{\~}199.3\;mg/{\ell}$ chlorophyll a $3.71{\~}49.02\;mg/m^3$, TIN $2.01{\~}24.47\;{\mu}g-a5./{\ell}$, phosphate $0.60{\~}11.03\;{\mu}g-at./{\ell}$ and silicate $4.04{\~}476.36\;{\mu}g-at./{\ell}$. The range of temperature of substratum (bottom soil) was $14.2{\~}29.7^{\circ}C$, pH $8.3{\~}9.5$, water content of substratum was $0.28{\~}0.49\;mg/g$ dried mud, COD $2.80{\~}50.94\;mg/g$ dried mud, total organic matter $1.05{\~}1.97\%$ concentration of total Kjedhal nitrogen $31.9{\~}194.9\;{\mu}g./{\ell}$ dried mud, and sulfide $0.032{\~}0.133\;mg/g$ dried mud. Fine sand was dominant ranging over $92{\~}95\%$ and silt and clay was $2.8{\~}8.1\%$ of the composition of substratum. Some residual agricultural chemicals, ${\alpha},\;{\beta},\;{\gamma}$-BHC, heptachlor, heptachlor-epoxide, aldrin, DDE, DDT and dieldrin were detected in hard clams collected from Puan areas. Especialy, more chemical were detected during the period of rainfalls. From above results, it is considered that the hard clam frams were not yet recovered from deteriorated conditions for aquaculture.

Short-term Variations in Community Structure of Phytoplankton and Heterotrophic Protozoa during the Early Fall Phytoplankton Blooms in the Coastal Water off Incheon, Korea (인천 연안의 초가을 식물플랑크톤 대증식기에 식물플랑크톤과 종속영양 원생동물 군집의 단주기 변동)

  • In order to examine the short-term variations of phytoplankton and heterotrophic protozoa community structures with bloom events, water samples were collected every other day at one site in the coastal water off Incheon, Korea, from August 15-September 30, 2001. $Chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentrations varied widely from 1.8 to $19.3\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$ with the appearances of two major peaks of $Chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentration during the study period. Size-fractionated $Chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentration showed that net-size fraction ($>20\;{\mu}m$) comprised over 80% of total $Chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ during the first and second bloom periods, nano-size fraction ($3{\sim}20\;{\mu}m$) comprised average 42% during the pre- (before the first bloom) and post-bloom periods (after the second bloom), and pico- size fraction ($<3\;{\mu}m$) comprised over 50% during inter-bloom periods (i.e. between the first and second bloom periods). Dominant phytoplankton community was shifted from autotrophic nanoflagellates to diatom, diatom to picophytoplankton, picophytoplankton to diatom, and then diatom to autotrophic nanoflagellates, during the pre-, the first, the inter, the second, and the post-bloom periods, respectively. During the blooms, Chaetoceros pseudocrinitus and Eucampia zodiacus were dominant diatom species composed with more than 50% of total diatom. Carbon biomass of heterotrophic protozoa ranged from 8.2 to $117.8\;{\mu}gC\;l^{-1}$ and showed the highest biomass soon after the peak of the first and second blooms. The relative contribution of each group of the heterotrophic protozoa showed differences between the bloom period and other periods. Ciliates and HDF were dominant during the first and second bloom periods, with a contribution of more than 80% of the heterotrophic protozoan carbon biomass. Especially, different species of HDF, thecate and athecate HDF, were dominant during the first and the second bloom periods, respectively. Interestingly, Noctiluca scintillans appeared to be one of the key organisms to extinguish the first bloom. Therefore, our study suggests that heterotrophic protozoa could be a key player to control the phytoplankton community structure and biomass during the study period.

Analysis of Site Condition in Domestic Trade Port for Operation of Mobile Harbor (모바일하버 운영을 위한 국내 무역항 후보지 분석)

  • In this study, a new concept of ocean transport system, called the mobile harbor serving for a short distance transport of containers with cargo handling cranes between mother containerships and coastal ports, is introduced. Instead of direct berthing a very large containership at the coastal port, Mobile Harbor is moving to the offshore mooring basin with enough water depth condition. Therefore, investigation of the coastal environment, technical condition and limitation of the domestic trade ports for the application of Mobile Harbor, is essential process. To figure out the accessibility of mobile harbor, the environmental conditions, the cargo handling capacity and marine traffic volume and flow pattern has been analyzed with the tools for marine traffic simulation and virtual navigation aids system. The most proper Mobile Harbor mooring areas among trade ports of the south and east coast are selected by analyzing the obtained information and evaluating its application: (1) Under natural environmental conditions such as air and sea weather, three candidate areas are selected such as Masan port, Ulsan port, and Busan(New port) port. (2) Under marine traffic and appropriateness of water facilities, three candidate areas are selected as Mokpo port, Busan(New port) port, and Donghae & Mookho port (3) For a region-based analysis considering handling capacity and the local managed trade ports in vicinity, three candidate areas are selected as Busan region, Yosu & KwangYang region, and Mokpo region. Through this study, the basic guideline for selection of optimum trade port and offshore mooring basin for mothership and Mobile Harbor is recommended. In order to apply the Mobile Harbor to the real water, navigaton aids as the virtual route identification with AIS must be introduced for maritime safety in the vicinity of Mobile Harbor area which berthing and cargo handling is being conducted.

Taste Compounds and Reapprearance of Functional Flavoring Substances from Low-Utilized Shellfishes (연안산 저활용 패류를 이용한 기능성 풍미소재의 정미성분 및 정미발현)

  • In present paper, we examined the flayer constituents and functionality of two stage enzyme hydrolysates (TSEH) of purplish clam and oyster, and also examined reappearance of oyster flavors through repreparation of individual flayer constituents. Total free amino acid contents in TSEH was $1943.0mg\%$ for purplish clam and was $5066.2 mg\%$ for oyster, respectively, Major free amino acids in purplish clam extracts were taurine, glutamic acid, glycine, alanine, Iysine and arginine, and in oyster extracts were taurine, asparagine, glutamic acid, valine, leucine, alanine, Iysine and arginine. As for nucleotides and related compounds, AMP was the principal component though small amounts in TSEH of purplish clam and oyster, and also contents of TMAO, total creatinine, and betaine were $41.2 mg\%,\;35,9 mg\%$ and $220.9 mg\%$ for that of purplish clam and $3.51 mg\%,\;33.4 mg\%$ and $380.9 mg\%$ that of oyster, respectively. The major inorganic ions in TSEH of both samples were Na, K, P, Cl and $PO_4$, and major non-volatile organic acid was succinic acid. The TSEH of purplish clam and oyster revealed very higher inhibition effect ($84.1\%,\;77.0\%$) in ACE inhibition than that ($0\~44.7\%$) of water and autolytic extract. A synthetic oyster extract prepared from pure chemicals on the basis of the analytical data on the TSEH, satisfactorily reproduced the taste of the natural extract except for a slight lack of mildness and odor. From the omission test the major taste compounds of oyster extract were free amino acid and inorganic ions. The quaternary ammonium bases, nucleotides and related compounds seemed to net an auxiliary role in taste of that.
