  • This article is about the film titled <The Man Who Invented Christmas> written from the perspective of analytical psychology. The film shows the changes in Charles Dickens while he wrote the book 『A Christmas Carol』. 『A Christmas Carol』 was published when the Christmas traditions were almost forgotten. The book enlightened the value of love-thy-neighbor and revived the tradition of having Christmas meals with family. The article illustrates the process of recognizing shadow while a man overcomes the life crisis of losing his persona. Referring to the biography of Charles Dickens and the historical background of his time, the article explores how the collective issues of capitalism influence his personal life. Christmas is a timeless symbol of death and rebirth then becomes a solace for those who suffer from capitalism.

  • Physical modeling is a synthesis method of high quality sound which is similar to real sound for musical instruments. However, since physical modeling requires a lot of parameters to synthesize sound of a musical instrument, it prevents real-time processing for the musical instrument which supports a large number of sounds simultaneously. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) parallel processor that supports real-time processing of sound synthesis of guitar, a representative plucked string musical instrument. To control six strings of guitar, we used a SIMD parallel processor which consists of six processing elements (PEs). Each PE supports modeling of the corresponding string. The proposed SIMD processor can generate synthesized sounds of six strings simultaneously when a parallel synthesis algorithm receives excitation signals and parameters of each string as an input. Experimental results using a sampling rate 44.1 kHz and 16 bits quantization indicate that synthesis sounds using the proposed parallel processor were very similar to original sound. In addition, the proposed parallel processor outperforms commercial TI's TMS320C6416 in terms of execution time (8.9x better) and energy efficiency (39.8x better).

  • This study investigates the difference of sound velocity (compressional wave velocity) between gas hydrate-bearing sediments and nongas hydrate-bearing sediments in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea. We use a dataset measured from one site in the central part of the Ulleung Basin. Sound velocity for gas hydrate-bearing sediment shows the range from 1600 m/s to 2200 m/s. However, the value for nongas hydrate-bearing sediment is mostly around 1500 m/s, being less than 1400 m/s below 140 m subbottom depth. This trend is probably due to the presence of free gas below BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector). Gas hydrate-bearing sediments show high value (maximum 150 Ohm-m) of resistivity. The physical properties between gas hydrate-bearing sediment and nongas hydrate-bearing sediment are characterized by the different patterns due to the presence of gas hydrate in comparison with those of marine unconsolidated sediments. Therefore, in order to investigate acoustic and physical properties for gas hydrate-bearing sediments, the study for the occurrence type and the amount of gas hydrates should be conducted simultaneously.

  • This paper describes the non-stringed guitar composed of laser strings, frets, sound synthesis algorithm and a processor. The laser strings that can depict stroke and playing arpeggios comprise laser modules and photo diodes. Frets are implemented by voltage divider. The guitar body does not need to implement physically because commuted waveguide synthesis is used. The proposed frets enable; players to represent all of chords by the chord glove as well as guitar solo. Sliding, hammering-on and pulling-off sounds are synthesized by using parameters from the voltage divider. Because the pitch shifting corresponds to the time-varying propagation speed in the digital waveguide model, the proposed model can synthesize vibrato as well. After transformation of signals from the laser strings and frets into parameters for synthesis algorithm, the digital signal processor, TMS320F2812, performs the real-time synthesis algorithm and communicates with the DAC. The demonstration movieclip available via the Internet shows one to play a song, 'Arirang', synthesized by proposed algorithm and interfaces in real-time. Consequently, we can conclude that the proposed synthesis algorithm is efficient in guitar solo and there is no problem to play the non-stringed guitar in real-time.

  • This paper describes a sound engine of Korean traditional instruments, which are the Gayageum and Taepyeongso, by using a TMS320F2812. The Gayageum and Taepyeongso models based on commuted waveguide synthesis (CWS) are required to synthesize each sound. There is an instrument selection button to choose one of instruments in the proposed sound engine, and thus a corresponding sound is produced by the relative model at every certain time. Every synthesized sound sample is transmitted to a DAC (TLV5638) using SPI communication, and it is played through a speaker via an audio interface. The length of the delay line determines a fundamental frequency of a desired sound. In order to determine the length of the delay line, it is needed that the time for synthesizing a sound sample should be checked by using a GPIO. It takes $28.6{\mu}s$ for the Gayageum and $21{\mu}s$ for the Taepyeongso, respectively. It happens that each sound sample is synthesized and transferred to the DAC in an interrupt service routine (ISR) of the proposed sound engine. A timer of the TMS320F2812 has four events for generating interrupts. In this paper, the interrupt is happened by using the period matching event of it, and the ISR is called whenever the interrupt happens, $60{\mu}s$. Compared to original sounds with their spectra, the results are good enough to represent timbres of instruments except 'Mu, Hwang, Tae, Joong' of the Taepyeongso. Moreover, only one sound is produced when playing the Taepyeongso and it takes $21{\mu}s$ for the real-time playing. In the case of the Gayageum, players usually use their two fingers (thumb and middle finger or thumb and index finger), so it takes $57.2{\mu}s$ for the real-time playing.

  • Energy harvesting technology that converts the wasted energy resources into electrical energy is emerging as a semipermanent power source for self-powered electronics and wireless low-power sensor systems. Among the various energy conversion techniques, flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (f-PEHs), using materials with piezoelectric effects, have attracted significant interest because they can harvest a small mechanical energy into electrical signals without constraints of time and space in various environments. In this study, we used a flexible piezoelectric composite film fabricated by dispersing BaHfxTi(1-x)O3 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1) piezoelectric powders inside a polymeric matrix to facilitate f-PEHs. The fabricated f-PEH with optimal Hf contents (x = 0.05) generated a maximum output voltage of 0.95 V and current signal of 130 nA with stable electrical/mechanical disabilities under periodically bending deformations. In addition, we demonstrated a cantilever-type f-PEH and investigated its potential as a sensor by characterizing the output performance under mechanical vibrations at various frequencies. This study provides the breakthrough for realizing self-powered energy harvesting and sensing systems by adopting the lead-free piezoelectric composites under vibrational environments.

  • As the demand for hydrogen electric vehicles for commercial vehicles increases, the durability of PEMFCs must increase more than five times that of passenger cars, so research and development to improve durability is urgent. When the PEMFC membrane electrode assembly (MEA) undergoes chemical degradation, the MEA thickness decreases and pinholes occur. In this study, changes in the performance and durability of the MEA were measured while increasing the clamping pressure of the unit cell after open circuit voltage (OCV) holding, an accelerated chemical degradation experiment. As the clamping pressure increased, the resistance of the polymer membrane and the membrane/electrode contact resistance decreased, improving the I-V performance and reducing the hydrogen permeability. As the hydrogen permeability decreased, the OCV increased. When the pinhole area was removed and the MEA clamping pressure was increased, the hydrogen permeability decreased sharply, confirming that the local degradation has a large effect on the performance and durability of the entire cell. When the pinhole was removed and re-clamping and OCV holding was evaluated, it was confirmed that the durability improved according to the decrease in membrane resistance and hydrogen permeability.

  • In 2023, a number of seeds suspected to be discolored black oat seeds on oat farms in Gangjin were observed and examined for fungal infection. The species Alternaria alternata was predominant, accounting for 84% of all fungal infections. The appearance and quality of seeds harvested in 2022 were compared with seeds harvested in 2023 from the same field. The lightness value was lower in the seeds harvested in 2023, while the electrical conductivity was higher in the seeds harvested in 2023. The content of avenanthramide was found to be 10 times higher in the 2023 seeds than in those harvested in 2022. The accumulated precipitation in Gangjin in May 2023 was 230 times higher than that in May 2022, and the average relative humidity was high. These conditions created an environment suitable for infection of A. alternata, which were thought to have caused discolored black oat seeds.

  • This study delves into the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced cement composites(FRCC) concerning the dispersion method of multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs). MWCNTs find utility in industrial applications, particularly in magnetic sensing and crack detection, owing to their diverse properties including heat resistance and chemical stability. However, current research endeavors are increasingly directed towards leveraging the electrical properties of MWCNTs for self-sensing and smart sensor development. Notably, achieving uniform dispersion of MWCNTs poses a challenge due to variations in researchers' skills and equipment, with excessive dispersion potentially leading to deterioration in mechanical performance. To address these challenges, this study employs ultrasonic dispersion for a defined duration along with PCE surfactant, known for its efficacy in dispersion. Test specimens of FRCC are prepared and subjected to strength, drawing, and direct tensile tests to evaluate their mechanical properties. Additionally, the influence of MWCNT dispersion efficiency on the enhancement of FRCC mechanical performance is scrutinized across different dispersion methods.

  • In the literature, inhalation of cosmetic fragrances, including natural extracts or natural essential oils, has been reported to induce brainwave changes. Angelica gigas (AG) and Cnidium officinale (CO) are widely used in East Asian countries as traditional medicines to improve health, but there have been no previous reports of inhaling their aromas and assessing changes in brain activity through electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. In this study, the scent of natural herbal extracts such as Artemisia princeps var. orientalis (Compositae), AG, and CO was inhaled and evaluated whether emotional state changes were caused by olfactory stimuli, and brain activity was confirmed through EEG records before and after inhaling the scent of natural herbal extracts in subjects aged 20 to 30. We also used an electrocardiogram (ECG) to record the electrical activity of the heart during fragrance administration. The test results indicated that inhaling the scents of Compositae, AG, and CO extracts, as well as the positive control lavender, significantly increased the relative alpha power and the alpha/beta ratio of brain waves across the brain regions. The ECG recordings indicated that the inhalation of Compositae fragrance significantly decreased the low-frequency/high-frequency ratio, and that the inhalation of traditional herbal extract fragrances resulted in comfort and relaxation.
