One of constraints in the application of unit-load method to estimate non-point pollution loads in the total water pollutant load management system (TWPLMS) is the limited numbers of applicable unit-loads. Since only 7 unit-loads are currently available for total 28 land-use categories in the national land register data, each unit-loads inevitably have to represent several land-use categories regardless of their actual land coverage characteristics. As a way to minimize the problem, this study suggested a nested application of the available unit-loads based on the analysis of high resolution aerial images taken in the Kyeongan watershed. Statistical analysis of three selected land-use categories such as school, apartment complex, and golf course showed that there exit significant (95% confidence level) relationships between the registered land-uses and actual land coverages. The school and apartment complex currently considered as 100% ground have only 65% and 80% of ground characteristics, respectively. Golf course, which is considered as 100% pasture, has about 5% of ground area. This indicates that the unit-load method using in TWPLMS can give over estimated non-point pollutant loads for the school and apartment complex (19.8~54.4%) but under estimation for the golf course (80.9%).
Irrigation water has been mainly used for paddy rice. Irrigated paddy land tends to be recently converted to land for green house, farm house, and rural-industrial complex. Consequently, demand of water for crops, domestic & industrial, rural recreations, small-scaled hydropower, livestocks, and environment in the rural area, so called rural water, is rapidly increasing. In order to supply rural water, water in the existing irrigation reservoir could be enlarged by repairment of irrigation canal and reinforcement of irrigation reservoir, and be saved by the operation rule curve, utilization of dead water, and balanced storage management.
For effective watershed management, we must understand the complex and dynamic relationships of land uses and water quality. Despite numerous studies investigated the relationships between water quality and land use, there are increasing concerns on the geographical variation and lack of spatial integrations in previous studies. We investigated the relationships between land use and water quality characteristics in the Hwa-Sung estuarine reservoir watershed in Korea, which has spatially integrated land uses. The spatial variations of these relationships were also examined using zonal analysis. Water quality parameter were correlated positively with residential and forest and negatively with paddy and upland especially during base flow in the near buffer zone. During storm flow, correlation between land use and water quality was less apparent. Population and livestock density was correlated well to water quality parameter than just number of population and livestock. Relationships across zones, distinguished by distances from streams, were inconsistent and erratic, suggesting that the relationships between remote land uses and water quality may be affected more significantly by sub-basin characteristics than by the land use itself. The watersheds studied are mainly non-urban and their land uses are similar to typical watershed of other estuarine reservoirs, therefore, the correlation developed in this study might be helpful to manage other watersheds of estuarine reservoir. This methodology could be applied to other areas where the watershed characteristics are not significantly different from the study area.
Various matching methods have been introduced by investigators to improve digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy of satellite imagery. This study proposed an area-based matching method according to land cover property using correlation coefficient of pixel brightness value between the two images for DEM generation from IKONOS stereo imagery. For this, matching line (where "matching line" implies straight line that is approximated to complex nonlinear epipolar geometry) is established by exterior orientation parameters to minimize search area. The matching is carried out based on this line. Land cover classes are divided off into water, urban land, forest and agricultural land. Matching size is selected using a correlation-coefficient image in the four areas. The selected sizes are $81{\times}81$ pixels window, $21{\times}21$ pixels window, $119{\times}119$ pixels window and $51{\times}51$ pixels window in the water area, urban land, forest land and agricultural land, respectively. And hence, DEM is generated from IKONOS stereo imagery using the selected matching sizes and land cover map on the four types.
In a residential complex case, the efficiency of land use are maximized, but a variation of external condition such as load in-equality, the increase in wind velocity and solar radiation by a height causes increasing energy in a building. Besides, because of increasing window size for a lighting and a view, it comes heating load in winter and cooling load in summer. A choice of cooling-system is important for this reason. Recently an internal high-rise residential complex installs an air-cooling system and operates individual heating. However, this study applies water-cooling used one public cooling-tower instead of an air-cooling system, also with an efficiency test of an air and a water-cooling system, consider an internal applicability.
Climate models, both global and regional, have increased in sophistication and are being run at increasingly higher resolutions. The Land Surface Models (LSMs) coupled to these climate models have evolved from simple bucket models to sophisticated Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) schemes needed to support complex linkages and processes. However, some underpinnings of terrestrial hydrologic parameterizations so crucial in the predictions of surface water and energy fluxes cause model errors that often manifest as non-linear drifts in the dynamic response of land surface processes. This requires the improved parameterizations of key processes for the terrestrial hydrologic scheme to improve the model predictability in surface water and energy fluxes. The Common Land Model (CLM), one of state-of-the-art LSMs, is the land component of the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). However, CLM also has energy and water biases resulting from deficiencies in some parameterizations related to hydrological processes. This research presents the implementation of a selected set of parameterizations and their effects on the runoff prediction. The modifications consist of new parameterizations for soil hydraulic conductivity, water table depth, frozen soil, soil water availability, and topographically controlled baseflow. The results from a set of offline simulations are compared with observed data to assess the performance of the new model. It is expected that the advanced terrestrial hydrologic scheme coupled to the current CLM can improve model predictability for better prediction of runoff that has a large impact on the surface water and energy balance crucial to climate variability and change studies.
Hydrological modeling is a very complex task dealing with multi-source of data, but it can be potentially benefited from recent improvements and developments in remote sensing. The estimation of actual land surface evapotranspiration (ET), an important variable in water management, has become possible based entirely on satellite data. This study adopted a Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) with the use of MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) satellite products. The SEBAL model is one of the commonly used approach for the ET estimation. A primary advantage of the SEBAL model is rather its minimum requirement for ground-based weather data. The MODIS provides ET (MOD16) product that is based on the Penman-Monteith equation. This study aims to further develop the SEBAL model by employing a more rigorous parameterization scheme including the estimation of uncertainty associated with parameter and model selection in regression model. Finally, the proposed model is compared with the existing approaches and comprehensive discussion is then provided.
Land use change by urbanization has significantly affected the hydrological process including the runoff characteristics. Due to this situation, it has been becoming more complicated to manage non-point source pollutions caused by rainfall. In order to effectively control non-point sources, it is necessary to identify the reduction efficiency of the various management method based on land use characteristics. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyze the reduction efficiency of non-point source pollution management practices targeting three different watersheds with the different land use characteristics using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). To do this, the vulnerable subwatersheds to non-point source pollution occurrence within each watershed were selected based on the streamflow and water quality simulation results. Then, considering the land use, low impact development (LID) or best management practices (BMPs) were applied to the selected subwatersheds and the efficiency of each management was analyzed. As a result of analysis of the non-point source pollution reduction efficiency, when LID was applied to urban areas, the average reduction efficiencies of SS, NO3-N, and TP were 5.92%, 4.62%, and 10.35%, respectively. When BMPs were applied to rural areas, the average reduction efficiencies of SS, TN and TP were 35.45%, 4.37%, and 10.16%, respectively. The results of this study can be used as a reference for determining appropriate management methods for non-point source pollution in urban, rural, and complex watersheds.
The temporal and spatial analyses of total nitrogen (TN) fractionation were conducted in order to understand 1) total nitrogen components in streams and 2) their patterns in rainy and dry seasons. The result showed that the concentration of nitrogen components in stream water was lower in non-urban area and getting higher in urban area. Dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) was 95~97.7% of total nitrogen in streams, and the proportion of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) was higher with increasing urban area. The concentration of total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$) were highest in winter among four seasons. The result was showed that concentration of $NH_3-N$ was same variation as concentrations of TN and $NO_3-N$ in urban-rural complex and urban areas, except rural areas. During rainy season, concentrations of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and $NH_3-N$ increased in rural areas and decreased in both urban-rural complex and urban areas. Correlation between total nitrogen components and land uses was positively correlated with site > paddy, and negatively correlated with forest. The variation of total nitrogen concentration was determined by $NO_3-N$ in non-urban areas, by $NO_3-N$ and $NH_3-N$ in urban-rural complex and by $NH_3-N$ in the urban areas.
In order to overtake a quantitative analysis of effect of anthropogenic heat and different land-use on urban thermal environment numerical simulation of surface energy budget was carried out under typical summer synoptic condition. It is beneficial to understand surface temperature of complex urban surace. The different land-use types are classified of rice field farm fruit garden residential region forest water and swamp by using map scaled 1/25000 of Pusan metropolitan. The model predicts that maximum heat island intensity in the central part of Pusan is 7$^{\circ}C$ at 2000 LST in summertime. The surface temperature is propotional to the density of constructions. The effect of anthropogenic heat generation on surface temperature is the increase of 0.3$^{\circ}C$ at 1400LST in the central part of Pusan during summertime.
