  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) upper and lower limb coordinated exercises on balance in elderly women. Methods: The study was conducted with 27 elderly women who were at least 65-year-old. The subjects were randomly assigned to a PNF upper and lower limb coordinated exercise group consisting of 14 subjects and an aero step balance exercise group consisting of 13 subjects, and the exercises were performed for 30 minutes, three times per week, for eight weeks. One Leg Stance Tests (OLST), Functional Reaching Tests (FRT), Four Square Step Tests (FSST), and Timed Up and Go (TUB) tests were conducted before and after the exercises to evaluate the subjects' static balance ability and dynamic balance ability. Among the collected data, the subjects' general characteristics were evaluated using descriptive statistics, the intra-group differences of the test results before and after the intervention were compared using paired sample t-tests, and the inter-group differences in the results before and after the intervention were evaluated using independent sample t-tests. The statistical significance level was set to 0.05. Results: Among the OLST, FRT, FSST, and TUG tests, the experimental group showed positive FSST results that were statistically significantly greater than the control group; the results of the other tests were also more positive for this group, but the differences between the groups were not statistically significant. The magnitude of the effects for both groups was clinically significant. Conclusion: Since inter-limb coordinated exercises for PNF applied to elderly women were found to produce good results for both static balance ability and dynamic balance ability, these exercises can be used in exercise programs to improve balance in elderly women.

  • Purpose: The current study seeks to examine the effects of stabilizing reversal(SR) and rhythmic stabilization(RS) in proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques on static balance in normal female adults. Methods: Subjects included 20 healthy women in their 20s. They were randomly divided into SR and RS groups. To assess static balance before and after PNF intervention, the good balance system was used to measure the interior and exterior center of pressure (COP) movement distance, front and rear COP movement distance before and after the intervention, and velocity moment. Results: Interior and exterior COP movement distance, front and rear COP movement distance, and velocity moment decreased in the SR group, but no statistically significant differences were observed. In the RS group, the interior and exterior COP movement distance declined without any significant difference, while the front and rear COP movement distance and velocity moment significantly decreased. The interior and exterior COP movement distance, front and rear COP movement distance, and velocity moment declined more in the RS group than in the SR group. Conclusion: The findings of the current study indicate that the RS technique is more effective than the SR technique for improving the balance ability of healthy female adults. The results of this study can thus be utilized in the selection of effective interventions for improving the balance ability of healthy female adults.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate changes in the cervical and lumbar flexion-relaxation ratio, range of motion, pressure pain threshold, and perceived comfort following the wearing of a trunk brace during smartphone watching. Methods: To calculate the number of subjects for this study, an analysis with G*Power was performed at a statistical power of 0.8, an effect size of 0.5, and a significance level of 0.05, based on the results of a preliminary experiment on five subjects. In total, 27 adult men and women were recruited who had been informed of the study's purpose and process and had agreed to participate. All subjects watched content on a smartphone for 20 minutes in the same posture and conditions while wearing and not wearing a trunk brace, and then their cervical and lumbar flexion-relaxation ratio, range of motion, pressure pain threshold, and perceived comfort were measured. Results: Compared to the non-wearing of a trunk brace, the wearing of a trunk brace resulted in a statistically significant smaller decline in cervical extension and right-side cervical rotation (p<0.05). When the subjects wore a trunk brace, their right- and left-side cervical and right-side lumbar pressure pain statistically significantly improved when compared to not wearing a trunk brace (p<0.05). They also perceived a significantly lowered level of comfort 20 minutes after wearing a trunk brace compared to immediately after wearing it (p<0.05). Conclusion: The trunk brace was effective in reducing declines in right-side cervical rotation and the occurrence of left- and right-side cervical and right-side lumbar pressure pain. The findings indicate the need to improve the perceived comfort of trunk braces.

  • This study aims to unravel the shift in the customary method of disseminating information about the ritual of Perang Topat (literally translated as "rice-cake war") as carried out by the custom community of Kemaliq Lingsar in the West Lombok Regency of Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Grounded in the ethnography of communication research methodology, this study examines the process of the cultural ritual during the 2020 period of the pandemic and compares it to the ones held in 2018 and 2019 (before the current pandemic). Drawing on findings from observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, it was revealed that the traditional or custom-oriented community of Kemaliq Lingsar abandoned all three prominently used methods of disseminating the information of the Perang Topat ritual that had been used prior to the pandemic, and that they were replaced by a strategy with solely face-to-face (FTF) interpersonal communication carried out by visiting the homes of the target participants of the cultural event. This method was relevant to the current viral crisis because it enabled the committee to minimize the number of spectators which might potentially violate COVID-19 health protocols. This finding also reinforces the hypothetical statement that interpersonal communication via FTF is effective in disseminating information in a limited manner and empowering the emotional bond between the individuals who share relationships and similar interests. The findings of the present study can be a reference for any events where physical distancing must be strictly imposed and require a limit to the number of participants during the pandemic.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of balloon blowing exercise on multiple pulmonary function and maximum voluntary ventilation in patients with mild intellectual disabilities in their 20s. 10 people in the experimental group and 10 people in the control group participated in the experiment. The experimental group performed the balloon blowing exercise for 30 minutes a day, and the control group performed the diaphragm breathing exercise for 30 minutes each. The subjects measured voluntary capacity and maximal voluntary ventilation using Fitmate before and after the experiment. Subjects were assessed with Vital capacity(VC) and Maximal voluntary ventilation(MVV) before and after the test and the results were compared with the paired t test. Data analysis was performed with SPSS win 18.0. After the experiment, the experimental group showed higher lung capacity and maximum ventilation than the control group. Through this study, the experimental group increased voluntary capacity and maximum voluntary ventilation more than the control group. It is thought that the quality of life can be improved if we continuously manage the health of intellectuals by developing various breathing exercise programs.

  • In this study, basic experiments were conducted to improve the quality of muffins using kamut (Triticum turanicum Jakubz) for making products to help improve human health. Kamut powder addition decreased the pH, moisture content, muffin height, and dough yield. Chromaticity measurement of muffins with added kamut powder showed decreased L value, increased a value, and increased b value. Measurement of physical properties showed that the tackiness and cohesiveness of muffins decreased with increasing amounts of added kamut powder, along with increased gumminess and chewiness. ABTS and DPPH scavenging activities were higher in ethanol extracts than in deionized water extracts. Therefore, when making muffins, it is judged that 10 to 15% of kamut powder is most suitable in consideration of physicochemical analysis and antioxidant activity.

  • A 60-year-old male presented with a three-month history of redness and swelling on his left little finger. His medical history was not informative. Wound culture revealed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. After vancomycin administration, the skin lesions became worse and whole body bullae and desquamation occurred. This was initially suspected to be a drug eruption; thus, we switched antibiotics from vancomycin to teicoplanin. However, biopsy revealed Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS). After several days, generalized skin symptoms improved. The patient recovered and is in good physical health without recurrence six months later. We describe a localized form of SSSS, which is very rare in healthy adults. Consequently, there is a high risk of misdiagnosis. Thus, we report a rare case of SSSS in a healthy adult and the importance of early histological examination for accurate diagnosis.

  • Objective To investigate and demonstrate persistent increase of peak cough flow after mechanical in-exsufflator application, in patients with neuromuscular diseases and pneumonia. Methods A mechanical in-exsufflator was applied with patients in an upright or semi-upright sitting position (pressure setting, +40 and $-40cmH_2O$; in-exsufflation times, 2-3 and 1-2 seconds, respectively). Patients underwent five cycles, with 20-30 second intervals to prevent hyperventilation. Peak cough flow without and with assistive maneuvers, was evaluated before, and 15 and 45 minutes after mechanical in-exsufflator application. Results Peak cough flow was 92.6 L/min at baseline, and 100.4 and 100.7 L/min at 15 and 45 minutes after mechanical in-exsufflator application, respectively. Assisted peak cough flow at baseline, 15 minutes, and 45 minutes after mechanical in-exsufflator application was 170.7, 179.3, and 184.1 L/min, respectively. While peak cough flow and assisted peak cough flow increased significantly at 15 minutes after mechanical in-exsufflator application compared with baseline (p=0.030 and p=0.016), no statistical difference was observed between 15 and 45 minutes. Conclusion Increased peak cough flow after mechanical in-exsufflator application persists for at least 45 minutes.
